Our larger team is now ready to use Slack! How do I make this happen?

I created a Slack account for my sub-team of 5 people a year ago. Now our larger team of 40 that consists of other sub-teams wants to use it too. We want all of our sub-team's chat history to remain just available to us. Because all of our chat history is in #general, I can’t make it into a private channel. What do I do now? [more inside]

How does NAFTA work for a self-employed person?

I'm a Canadian citizen who is self-employed who regularly employs the services of others to produce some of the merchandise I sell. I've recently been getting items made by someone in the US, who produces the items themselves. I know that, under some circumstances, NAFTA (North American Free Trade Agreement) can make it that I don't have to pay duties when importing these items. However, I can't find specific information to explain what situations these are. Can anyone help me out? [more inside]

Toolchain for a newsletter

My workplace has a TV with upcoming events on it. The events are from a variety of sources. This is done super-manually right now. My boss wants that information available as a hard-copy newsletter now, with the events of the next week on it. And maybe other outputs like digital newsletter, or to social media accounts or via sms etc. This seems to me an ideal situation to have the info pulled into one source and then pushed out to many. What's a good process? [more inside]

Gauging the reliability of a Japanese Imported yet European make of car

Hello, I am thinking of importing a car from Japan to Canada. To import to Canada, the vehicles must be 15 years old, but usually have very low mileage. I have done this before with Japanese models with great results. Now I am thinking of importing either a 2000 Alfa Romeo 156, or a 2000 BMW 3 series Wagon. Both have relatively low mileage of around 75K... [more inside]

Are Gray Market Cars in the US still a thing?

Back in the 1980s, I remember a lot of older (richer) friends in Southern California were obsessed with gray market cars, importing special German versions of BMW and Porsche cars to the US and driving them. I haven't heard the term used in ages and there are TONS of Euro-spec cars I wish I could get in the US. Does this still happen? Or is it prohibitively expensive on both ends these days? Or is there some other reason? [more inside]

How can I, as a consumer, avoid supporting slave labor?

I understand and grudgingly accept that buying products made in China often involves supporting a system that treats workers badly and pays them poorly. But I also have believed that at least the workers are employed by choice, and that they deem work conditions they've opted for in some way superior to the alternatives. Today I learned that "Made in China" can also mean "made by the slave labor of religious dissidents." How can I exist as a consumer in this global economy without perpetuating and contributing to this system? Is there any ethical way to buy Chinese imports, or do I risk endorsing inhumanity every time? [more inside]

There's no way out of this, I will need the help of a soft machine to do my rote dirty work.

Matlab textparsing filter: So for a project, I am working with over one hundred years of hourly data collected for water levels. I have all of this collected in a giant, ~35 Mb text file. Toward the last decade or so, there are double entries for water level thanks to semidiurnal tide measurement upgrades, and so there is an irregular number of columns that isn't easy to work with the usual data import strategies. I need your help, citizens of Metafilter, so that I can successfully rig the Matlab textscan command (or something else) to read in this formatted data, and make accommodations for empty value strings!
