Feasability of importing used Dutch / Danish / German bike to USA

Does anyone have experience with trying to import *used* Dutch bikes (or Danish, or German, etc) into the USA? I've only been able to find *new* bikes for sale, and they tend to cost much more than similarly priced American / Chinese / Taiwanese re-makes (Linus, WorkCycles, Etc). [more inside]

I miss cassette MixTapes! How to correctly tag/import into Itunes

Itunes 11.1.5 MAC OS X 10.7.5 --- I made a mixtape with a hodgepodge of MP3's that I downloaded from here & there. What do I need to do in the ID3 Editor to make sure they import into Itunes as one album and in the correct order? (Currently it makes 3-4 albums of the same name with a few of the songs in each identically named album.) [more inside]

Are Gray Market Cars in the US still a thing?

Back in the 1980s, I remember a lot of older (richer) friends in Southern California were obsessed with gray market cars, importing special German versions of BMW and Porsche cars to the US and driving them. I haven't heard the term used in ages and there are TONS of Euro-spec cars I wish I could get in the US. Does this still happen? Or is it prohibitively expensive on both ends these days? Or is there some other reason? [more inside]

Can my parents bring me a Persian rug from Iran?

(asking for a friend) I am a US Citizen living in the US. My parents are permanent immigrants - they split their time between Iran and the US (California in case that matters). They have visited the US before and while in the US, they live with me -- their US address is the same as mine. Can they bring a Persian rug from Iran for me to keep? If so, what supporting documents will they need when entering the US at LAX? [more inside]

Is there any way to read .atom files?

Google Takeout allows one to export a blog from within Blogger, in the form of a .atom file. Opening the file in a web browser produces the message "This is an Atom formatted XML site feed. It is intended to be viewed in a Newsreader or syndicated to another site. Please visit Blogger Help for more info" My goal is to convert this file to a standard html bookmarks file, but I can't find any apps that can parse it so I can export it as html. Thanks for any suggestions. [more inside]

Black Currants and Licorice

I like two flavors that are not terribly popular in the US, but are liked abroad: black currant and licorice. I load up whenever I travel, and I have import sources for each (think of Ribena and Icelandic salt licorice). I've got imports covered. Are there US (not import) products that have these flavors that I'm not thinking of? [more inside]

How can I, as a consumer, avoid supporting slave labor?

I understand and grudgingly accept that buying products made in China often involves supporting a system that treats workers badly and pays them poorly. But I also have believed that at least the workers are employed by choice, and that they deem work conditions they've opted for in some way superior to the alternatives. Today I learned that "Made in China" can also mean "made by the slave labor of religious dissidents." How can I exist as a consumer in this global economy without perpetuating and contributing to this system? Is there any ethical way to buy Chinese imports, or do I risk endorsing inhumanity every time? [more inside]

Extracting/Importing iPhone SMS/MMS Data

So, I want to restore my iPhone to a backup that's about 1 month old. However, I don't want to lose all of the SMS/MMS and Contacts data that I've accumulated in the meantime. Is it possible to extract and import this newer data into my older backup? I've searched around previous, similar MeFi questions and various 3rd party software, but no dice. And, sadly, jailbreaking is not an option. [more inside]

There's no way out of this, I will need the help of a soft machine to do my rote dirty work.

Matlab textparsing filter: So for a project, I am working with over one hundred years of hourly data collected for water levels. I have all of this collected in a giant, ~35 Mb text file. Toward the last decade or so, there are double entries for water level thanks to semidiurnal tide measurement upgrades, and so there is an irregular number of columns that isn't easy to work with the usual data import strategies. I need your help, citizens of Metafilter, so that I can successfully rig the Matlab textscan command (or something else) to read in this formatted data, and make accommodations for empty value strings!
