I'm the proud owner of a new Intel iMac, a 2.4 Ghz with 2 gigs of RAM, and I'm having a dickens of a time trying to edit my 26 minute wedding video in iMovie '08--namely it's as slow as the molasses in January. I'm not making a feature film here...what gives? [more inside]

As the resident "hey, he's pretty good with computers" guy, I've been entrusted to create a slideshow for an end-of-the-year banquet. I need to find a program that will allow me to do this as easily as possible. I also need suggestions for programs or a workflow or both to take this slideshow and put it onto 200 DVD's, for all attending to take home a copy. I have an iBook G4, running the latest version of OSX. [more inside]

Got a new Macbook Pro. AVI files now show up as a white screen when imported into iMovie. I think that some codec is missing. I am not sure which one it is and would like a reputable source to download from. Any idea how to correct this?

Does anyone know anything about iMovie 3? I've just finished creating a project, and when I play through in iMovie it seems fine. However, when I export it, it's like the volume settings are completely ignored. Music that I set at 10% is actually playing at 100% and is overwhelming the dialogue. There doesn't seem to be anything in iMovie's documentation about this, so I'm stumped. What am I doing wrong?

I was cranking out the family christmas email, complete with links to crappy home movies, and I can't get my last little clip made in Imovie. Specifically, Imovie won't let me insert transitions. Regardless of the length of the clips I'm transitioning, the "add" button is all greyed out. Oh, and Merry Christmas!

iMovie question: I have not used iMovie much, but I'd like to play around. I have a Sony DSC-P100 digital point-and-shoot camera that records video, which I can save to my computer as mpg. However, I can't seem to use these files in iMovie. Does that sound right, or is there something wrong with my copy of iMovie, or what? I can find nothing in the iMovie help that describes what file formats may be imported.

i have a 58-minute video in iMovie - just regular digital video import (30 FPS, 720x480 pixels) which for some reason takes up 12 gigs on my hard drive. I want to burn this to make a DVD out of this movie, but 12 gigs is way too big. How do I burn this regular 58-minute video on a regular 4-gig DVD? there must be some way, since you can get 2 hours of Hollywood movie on a DVD... why not my 58 minutes of amateur video? (Why would it take up so much space, anyway?)

Video question: I'm working on some homebrewed video animation pieces on my mac. Basically, using matlab to output a stack of images that I then use Quicktime to turn into a movie. The final product of which will be burnt onto a DVD using iMovie and iDVD. Question: what resolution and framerate shoud I be outputting to prevent these apps from having to resample my movie, in either space or time? [more inside]

When I went with iMovie's "web compression" option -- 240x180, 12 frames a second, unspecified level of compression and "medium-quality" stereo sound -- for a recent 5.5 minute DV clip I shot, I got a 6MB .mov that I felt had serious compression issues. My first swipe at using the "expert" compression settings, conversely, gave me a 230MB file for the same resolution; a second pass was "only" 54MB but the nature of the "better" compression scheme made it look worse. And in my experience, making it an .mpg only makes it bigger. And yet I've seen TV episodes that look reasonably good full-screen and are only 350MB .avi files. I feel like I should be able to get 1 MB/minute of 240x180 video at great quality -- I've downloaded streaming video that would back up that assumption. Can someone point me toward wisdom?

I have a bunch of iMovie 3 projects which I'd like to export as QuickTime movies and then convert to MPEG2 with TMPGEnc Express on Winders. I wish that TMPGEnc could just import a DV stream, but it won't, so my question becomes: what's the most lossless QuickTime format I can save as? Size-to-quality isn't the issue. I have lots of space, I just want to lose very little in the QuickTime export. Which format do I export in, and with which settings? wish I had a Superdrive...
