My common-law partner and I are in the process of filing forms for her sponsorship of me to receive permanent resident status in Canada. She changed her marital status to common-law on her most recent tax forms (we have been living together since 2009). She is now being audited by Revenue Canada, since this reflects a change from her last tax return and how her GST/HST refunds are calculated.

For an Australian citizen thinking of moving to the United States, is it better to see an immigration lawyer in Australia, or one in the US, for consultation? This assumes that one is currently in Australia, but travels occasionally to the US.

I'm a dude going to marry a dude in New York State. Said dude I am going to marry is a resident alien from the UK. Will the UK recognize the marriage? Does he become an American Citizen by marrying him? Does that counteract his UK citizenship? What are my rights, here?

16 years ago, a Congressional Task Force was set up to study a major policy issue. Six months later, its report led to far-reaching legislative changes. Despite extensive news coverage from creation to completion, the report itself is virtually inaccessible.

Please recommend an attorney -- preferably one in the Los Angeles area -- for an unusual Italian citizenship by descent case. Looking for one with knowledge of complicated 20th Century treaties regarding the former Ottoman Empire, modern Turkey, Italy, and Greece, and experience dealing with a lack of some typical primary citizenship evidence.

I am helping my partner migrate to the U.S. after our marriage. We're nearing the point where we do an Affidavit of Support during our embassy interview abroad, which says I need to bring tax returns. I have not filed income taxes for the last three years, because I have been a full-time student in this country. What should I do?

Can anyone tell me the percentage of children of illegal immigrants who attend college? Specifically in Texas. We are arguing the HB 104 (in state tuition bill) in my government class and I need to know how many children of illegal immigrants who were not born in the US actually attend institutions of higher education....

A friend is considering participating in a paper-marriage-for-money to permit a stranger to remain in the U.S. The amount of money in question is not trivial and said friend is quite excited. I'm inclined to object, but need better grounds. What are the practical, legal, and philosophical issues involved in this? Any real-life stories?

I just got back from Texas with a day trip to Mexico. When coming back from Mexico but a few miles on 100 North IIRC inside the US border, we ran across a border patrol where I, the driver, was asked if the border patrol people could take a look inside the van. I said yes because I knew weren't hiding anything, but I'm guessing it was because we had a few Hispanics with us and a whole lot of luggage to hide people/stuff. Now, I've always heard one doesn't have to consent to allowing a search of the car, so I'm curious if I have said no to letting the border patrol look inside my car? What would have happened if I said no?

French Citizenship or Residence
I am a United States citizen who is looking to move to France. I am currently living in the Republic of Ireland but I am finding it harder and harder to maintain legal residence (even though, my mother is remarried to an Irishman and my ancestry is Irish) It seems you either have to be offered a contract for employment or be a student to stay here. I HEARD that requirements for French citizenship or permanent residence were more lenient. Does anyone have any information on this. I am NOT "highly skilled" in the slightest, unless you consider fixing PCs and Macs a skill.
