Escabechette has years of old e-mail stored on an old school account that's soon going to close. We want to move all this e-mail to her gmail account. Apparently this is now easy because "GMail supports IMAP." But I haven't succeeded in finding instructions (on AskMeFi or elsewhere) which are suitable for someone, like me, who doesn't know what the word "IMAP" means. Is this really easy? And can you explain to this naif how to do it? [more inside]

Leopard, Apple Mail & IMAP issues: Since upgrading to Leopard, Apple Mail seems sluggish and unresponsive. The application is effectively unusable. It's gotten to the point where I'm using webmail access on all of my machines. Is this an issue with Apple Mail or have I misconfigured something (I use Dreamhost for my personal email accounts). I've been using Mail.app with OS X Leopard as a front end to my Gmail account. And it works great, for the most part.
Unfortunately it seems to download both my "Inbox" and also the "All Mail" folder from Gmail. This has the effect of increasing the amount of messages in Mail.app significantly, and I want it to stop. [more inside]

I manage a small network of users, and currently we are using Google Apps for our domain, and getting mail via POP. I'd very much like to fake IMAP access to Google by creating an intermediary/shadow account (either on our web host, or on our local Apple XServe running OS X 10.4 Server) and configuring it like so:
1. Set Google address to forward automatically to shadow account.
2. Set desktops to check mail through shadow account, but send email through Google's SMTP servers, to keep conversations in tact. [more inside]

Webmail IMAP client: like SquirrelMail, but smaller, for a mobile phone?
My new phone (S/E w810i) does "email", in the sense that it can talk to a small range of pre-selected partners like Yahoo or AOL. I'm looking for a web-based IMAP client that I can use to access my own IMAP server. It should be something along the lines of MIR, but that allows writing mail as well as reading it. I like SquirrelMail a lot, but it doesn't have a non-framed, minimal view.

UW IMAP stores inboxes in /var/spool/mail/[username]. When I delete mail from my inbox (using Apple Mail), a copy of the message is left behind in that file, and it gets huge, even though it appears to have actually been removed from my inbox. Is there any way to prevent this happening, or at least to compact it?

I need to allow a few people to access our mail server using Outlook from outside the building. They use OWA yet do not like having to use a web page to do this (yeah, I know...).
I thought of setting up POP3 but am not sure what ports I need to open on the firewall (110, 25 do not seem to cut it).
What is the functional difference between POP3 and IMAP and is either one better/easier to setup? (File folder sharing would be an optional objective).

I'm looking for a web-based email client: something I can pull in all my IMAP accounts with at one time (preferably into one merged inbox), something free (although I'm open to paid solutions as well), and either something remotely hosted (like web2mail, but with simultaneous access to multiple accounts) or a PHP/JavaScript/what-have-you solution I can install on my webserver.
