I am planning to buy a new entry-level iMac with the built-in iSight and was wondering if anyone else has one already. What do you think about the machine? What kind of motion control do you have with the iSight, if any? (I'm an experienced Mac user, so I'm faimiliar with the OS already)

I'm thinking about buying a new iMac G5, and I'd like to bump the RAM up to 1GB from the standard 512MB. The Apple customization menu gives you the option of getting 1GB in two DIMMs or one; the latter is $50 more expensive. Is there any performance benefit in having all the RAM in one place, or is it just a question of keeping a slot open?

I'm a pc guy, but my friend's imac hard-drive has crashed. I managed to salvage the entire drive on a dvd, but otherwise it's been rendered inoperable. So, my question: can I just copy the appropriate folders (keeping directory structure) from the dvd to the new (essentially empty) drive and have everything work as before? Can I do this for specific software, such as outlook (all saved emails lost!) or word? Or do I have to to a manual re-install of all software, export of emails, etc., as any self-respecting pc would require. Mac OS 9.22

I have an old iMac that I want to get rid of and I want to erase the hard drive before I give it to someone/recycle it. The computer is screwed up (battery died, long story), and the only way I can erase it is to go up to the "erase" option in the drop down menu. I did that, and it seemed to work. Then, I reinitialized the hard drive. Does this mean it's really erased completely, or is the info still on there?

I'm going to buy my mother a new Mac Mini once the new iteration of OS X is out. Can anyone recommend a decent 15 or 17" flat panel display to go with it? I heard that you can get one for about $250 – $300, are those decent?

MacFilter: How do you make the screen fonts bigger in OS X? I've just upgraded my grandmother from a virus-infested WinME box to a 17" iMac G5. Unfortunately, the text is much too small for her to read clearly, and she wants her WinMe box back. I've changed the resolution down to 1024x768. Other than seriously degrading the image quality, it doesn't make the fonts much larger.
I'm comfortable working with the command line and editing plists, so don't hold anything back.

Garageband came with my computer, and I don't understand it at all. I was expecting it to be simpler than a four-track, but it's not. My computer (a G5) tells me that it has a built-in microphone, but when I play with Garageband, nothing happens. Are there any simple and detailed web tutorials about how to use this program? Caveat: I am basically computer-illiterate.

I brought my flat-panel Imac home from work over the break, and
forgot the power cord. It's a two hour round trip, so
I was wondering if it's possible to hack a PC power cord and get it to fit into the Imac's clover-shaped receptacle. Or, if there's another way around this.

I'm getting the new iMac in the mail on Tuesday, and I want to watch DVDs on it. I'd like to buy a set of 5.1 Surround Sound speakers for it, but as far as I can tell, you can't really just buy a set of speakers and plug them into the headphone jack on your computer. Or can you? My main interest in 5.1 Surround Sound is mostly for using the enhanced "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots" DVD, so this isn't really that big a deal, but I haven't found a simple setup for 5.1 speakers online.
If this is indeed not possible, what's a good set of Macintosh-usable speakers that cost around two hundred dollars?

Now I'm looking for games I can download. Freeware and shareware, preferably, as opposed to warez (although if you care to recommend a NES/SNES/etc. emulator ...). In particular, is there a decent FPS I can download for this machine?

When I create a background color is MS Word, and then print it out, the yellow on the screen takes on a green cast, and after a bit of fiddling, I can't seem to compensate for this effect. Is this inevitable, or, is this a function of working on a 5 year-old iMac, whose screen is losing it's phosphors? Any suggestions on how to efficiently match the screen color to the paper color? (I've adjusted the screen options in the OS already)

I have a dozen iMacs that I just upgraded to Panther. I want to set up the superuser account and then a limited rights login that can run only specific programs etc. I find all the configuration stuff nice and easy, but a fairly long process. In OS9 I couple copy the multiuser settings to CD and drag and drog the settings in the system folder. I can do a similar thing in OSX, can't I? If so, how?

I have an
iMac from the Summer of 2000, currently running OS 10.2.8. I do
not have Classic installed (and for complicated reasons, it would be extremely bothersome to install it now). In order to upgrade to 10.3, I'm told I must "
update my firmware".
This page offers firmgrade updates, but are OS 9-only. Are there any alternatives for an OS X user?
