I am just about to start my masters degree in public health, and I'm trying to develop a few extra skills for my postgraduate career. I want to learn some basic graphic design principles, primarily when it's relevant to creating posters, power-point presentations, and making information generally beautiful. [more inside]
Hello gurus out there! I have created a batch of 10 posters that are going to the printers later today (yikes!!!!). I was wasn't 100% sure of the requirements when I started, so my posters were created in the RGB color space. I now find out that the printer needs them to be CMYK. When I use File>Document Color Mode>CMYK Color, I notice that the color shift can be quite large on a few of my posters. [more inside]
I am looking to purchase the Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, and Indesign) for some professional work, but I'm opposed on principle to buying a subscription because I don't need the latest features and don't want my software access held hostage to a monthly payment. Is there an affordable way to purchase the suite (perhaps an older edition) that doesn't require a student ID or a nonprofit status? I am aware of open source alternatives like Inkscape but am hoping there is a way to get the Adobe versions at a reasonable price.
I'm a freelance illustrator. I'm trying to find lists of print publications, web sites, blogs, magazines, and any other outlets that pay (and accept unsolicited submissions). More specifically, I want to find appropriate/welcoming/well-fitting places to submit my portfolio, given the style of stuff I tend to do. Samples below the fold… [more inside]

I have an existing pdf presentation of about 15 pages. I want to re-edit the title on page 3. How do I do this? i open it up in photoshop, and I can change page 3, but i can't seem to easily reintegrate into my 15 page presentation. How do I open them all up, just change page 3, and then seemlessly resave with all 15 pages in pdf form order and ready to go? I have illustrator, photoshop, indesign and am downloading acrobat. THank you for any help.
I'm trying to find the name of a particular illustrator online with no luck. She's been well established for at least a decade, and does editorial illustration on a high level (New Yorker, etc). She does very soft, charcoal style semi-abstract portraits of people and then adds some color digitally. Her style is very unique to her, it looks more like fine art than illustration. I remember her having a European-sounding name.

I am moving to Las Vegas before the end of the year, and I'm looking for work. I'm a cartoonist/illustrator/visual story teller. I've applied for a few casino, and mobile gaming jobs, but have had no luck so far. I suspect that one of the primary sticking points is that I don't have industry experience, which is a qualification on every posting. I have spent most of my professional life in the production side of art, and now I'm trying to move into a more creative area. There are similar aspects, but it's not a 1:1 parallel. Is there a way to get this kind of experience, or comparable experience I might already have?
I need to print simple 4"x3" conference name badge inserts - just first name, last name, and a custom background image. I have Word, Excel, Illustrator and Access (though I've never used Access). I have the names in an Excel spreadsheet, and I've created a nice .jpg/.png image as the background. How do I pull this all together? Thanks!

I need recommendations for a all in one desktop or study laptop that can run the Adobe Suite (not the newest in the creative cloud) for a new proposed Digital Arts course. These would purely need to run Photoshop, Illustrator - some sort of video editing program, and potentially a light game design program. (Doesn't need to be Flash) I know about different specs needed but am lost how to find what would work best and for 32+ students in one classroom. This would be a huge investment for the High School so if I can quote under 30,000 for all the new technology it would be more likely considered. [more inside]

I'm a teacher and would like to make a few custom posters for my classroom for next year. I'm pretty decent with Illustrator but don't want to invest in it for rare projects such as this. I need something that will let me a bit more nuanced formatting than just a word doc. Any ideas?
Is there any way that I can get guides to stay visible across *all* layers in Illustrator CS6, instead of disappearing when I turn layers off? I'd rather not replace them every time I add a new layer. My google-fu is failing due a bad combination of search terms that keeps returning tutorials. Thank you!

I have Illustrator and intend to make an animated GIF. A tetrahedron is a pyramid with a triangle base. I can't make the 3D extrusion on CS4 agree that I want a pyramid shape. It gave me a triangular prism, though I followed an online tutorial (but that had a square base - which might be part of the problem, and it was for CS3). (No, I don't want to use Flash or download a trial version of Maya but thanks for the thought) So, online free 3D software where I can capture a number of positions of a tetrahedron, and redraw them from within Illustrator? I will need to also place text on each face, so if I can do it in one program only, I'll be happier.
I have an Excel spreadsheet with couple hundred rows: URLs, a few fields of identifying information (outlet, etc.), for media hits on the organization I work for. I need to make this into a pretty (or at least semi-legible to the computer illiterate) document that I can give to board members, senior staff, etc. What I would like is to use some form of scripting to automate this. Bonus points if the script can somehow open the URL and take a screenshot of the story so that I don't have to. I have a Mac, and both the Adobe and Microsoft suites. How do I not spend tedious hours manually doing this? Especially since I have to do it each month and quarter.
I'm watching a youtube tutorial about a plugin for Illustrator. The speaker mentions pressing the "out key" at which time this icon is displayed : Out Key. I can't figure out what he is referring to. I'm actually using a windows machine and he is on OSX, but I'm not seeing that on my macbook either. Can someone enlighten me? Thanks!

THE PROBLEM: Let's say you have a large store spread across several floors of a building, with many many aisles and sections. There are information kiosks located at various rooms in the store, oriented different directions. Each information kiosk has a map of the store on it, with the aisles and sections numbered and labeled, and the map rearranged and the text rotated to the viewpoint of the customer standing at the information desk. What is the most efficient way to create and update that map as sections change? [more inside]
Help me find a children's book. All I remember is the cover image, there's a frog standing up on two legs, holding a sword or a spear, beside a dragons tail that has been cut into sections. I remember the sections showing the bone, cut sort of like a sliced loaf of bread. [more inside]

I grew up always loving a children's book titled Throw a Kiss, Harry. The author is Mary Chalmers. She wrote a number of children's book and illustrated for several other authors. I have been able to find several of them through Alibris, but I have been unable to find much info on this great author. I believe she is still living and would be in her eighties, but other than that, I am at a loss. I would love to find out more about her and her work. After and an extensive web search I have no leads. Any ideas?
