My father has just suffered a minor stroke (a cerebrovascular accident) which caused him partial blindness on one eye. This is the first significant health related incident he ever had. His self-image was one of being a healthy person, so this event is causing him a lot of stress, in fact I believe he is in shock.

Wedding filter: An acquaintance and her husband recently sampled their anniversary cake (the one that spends the year after the wedding in the freezer). The groom got violently ill from the cake. Is there any mythology surrounding this tradition that will allow this possible omen to be interpreted correctly?

My mother-in-law's lung and lymph cancer is spreading. Outlook is not good. I would love some ideas to cheer her up or show solidarity. I would also like resources for when the inevitable comes and I have to explain to my three-year-old why he won't ever see his grandmother again.

My dog just died and I need some answers. She was a 6 month old female stray. About 5 days ago, she became listless and weak - wanting to sleep whenever she could. In addition she felt quite feverish and she suffered from labored breathing - making a wheezing sound with each breath.

I thought I could get health insurance through my school. I can't. They don't offer it because they assume everyone has it through work or their parents. I can't afford COBRA. How do I shop for the best insurance for myself? What kind of insurance can I expect? How do I know which plans are useless?

I live and work in midtown Manhattan and was walking home from work today when I was stopped by a woman. I'd guess she was somewhere between 50 and 70 - yes, I'm terrible at estimating age. She was dressed well and conservatively. She told me I reminded her of someone she used to know, that she lived nearby, and wondered if I'd like to get lunch or dinner with her sometime later during the week.

My partner and I would like to raise a child. We both have hereditary illnesses in our families (diabetes, cancer, heart disease), and this is one reason we lean towards adoption. But it recently occurred to me (duh) adopted kids can have hereditary illnesses too. So is adoption really better odds in the disease gene pool?
Ignoring other factors for a moment, if our only consideration for deciding to adopt or not was the likelihood of our child having (or less significantly, carrying genes for) hereditary illnesses, how bad would our genes need to be before adoption is clearly the better option? Are there specific types of adoption (e.g. international vs. American) that greatly improve the odds?

What Is WRONG with me, for God's sake? Last Wednesday night I was struck with a stiff neck, and really swollen knee joints. By end of work Thursday (driving 300 miles) I was wholly incapacitated with a low grade fever, upper back pain and lumpy knees. Now, much of this is not new, as I already have
blood cancer and
fibromyalgia, but this is way beyond the scope of these diseases. (I am immunologically compromised)

We currently have one highly social special needs cat, Tux, and we absolutely need to adopt a kitten to keep him company. Due to his medical condition, Tux may or may not be with us for much longer. The problem is, the kitten we're in love with is part of a set. Is adopting 2 kittens a good idea, or should we split the pair?
