I need more information about advocating for myself in the American Health Care system

So this was me commenting a bit ago about how some views toward health care actually damage the lives of real people. And now I need advice, because the situation has grown so far out of my control and I think I’ll go out of my mind with worry. [more inside]

How do I cheer up my MIL? And how do I prepare my son for the worst?

My mother-in-law's lung and lymph cancer is spreading. Outlook is not good. I would love some ideas to cheer her up or show solidarity. I would also like resources for when the inevitable comes and I have to explain to my three-year-old why he won't ever see his grandmother again. [more inside]

Mystery Disease

What Is WRONG with me, for God's sake? Last Wednesday night I was struck with a stiff neck, and really swollen knee joints. By end of work Thursday (driving 300 miles) I was wholly incapacitated with a low grade fever, upper back pain and lumpy knees. Now, much of this is not new, as I already have blood cancer and fibromyalgia, but this is way beyond the scope of these diseases. (I am immunologically compromised) [more inside]

Is there anything I(we) can do for a terminally-ill co-worker?

A co-worker has been diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Treatments have stopped and Hospice is now involved. He is 61 years old and has been working at the company for 40 years. We are an engineering firm and most of the employees are kind of... well... not the type to try (self-start) and do something for our co-worker of his family. I was wondering if there was anything I could do and/or have the office do to help, comfort, etc Obviously sending 'get well' cards is out of the question. ... I just don't know what it is appropriate. Any ideas? Thanks.

How can I help a friend who will be undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatment for the next few months?

My friend's wife is recovering from breast cancer. They removed the tumor a couple weeks ago, and they found no sign that the cancer had spread to the lymph system. She's expected to make a full recovery. But in order to kill any remaining cancer cells, for the next 2 months she'll be undergoing chemotherapy, and then 1 month of radiation therapy afterwards.
