My roommate won't refund rent after trying to kick me out early

To make a long story short, I moved in with an acquaintance of mine from my graduate program and her fiancé in May. It was fine at first, but it has been a nightmare the past couple months and I decided to move into a studio of my own. [more inside]

Murky business is afoot in the neighborhood

Some of my neighbors and I have noticed suspicious characters regularly and discreetly picking up small packages off of my neighbor's porch. Our first impulse is to call the police, but that thought is complicated by two things: 1. The neighbor is himself a cop who works in an evidence room. 2. We live in a place where corruption is well known. What should we do in this case? [more inside]

If I am undocumented/out of status is it "illegal" for me to work?

For the past two years, an acquaintance has been living in my car. Originally from Japan, he came here on a student visa and then, believing his employers would help him maintain a legal status, he overstayed that visa. Eventually, he lost his job and his home - and sought my help (hating our local homeless shelter, which is admittedly dangerous). Now he believes that if he works he will be breaking the law. This matters to him as he is pursuing legal action against his former employers (a case I don't think has much merit - though I haven't really looked at it). We're meeting with a homeless services provider today, who I'm certain will want him to have some kind of income before helping him find housing. And so the main question is: is it "illegal" for him to work? Thanks for any help.

When do I give away my illegal sublet? UK Housing Filter.

I'm currently living in an illegal housing assn. sublet (UK), and I'm moving soon. When do I tell the authorities about it? I want to do it because it just seems wrong for it to be occupied by people who don't necessarily need it when there's a queue of folk who do. But I want to cover my back. But I don't want to screw over the next lot of tenants. What would you do? [more inside]

Real risks of discussing illegal/illicit matters on social media

What's so wrong with posting and discussing illicit or illegal matters on social media? It seems like a bad idea in a vague sense, sure, and I'm aware of the NSA. Does anywhere currently exist like Kowloon Walled City?

Looking for slums that are similar to the former Kowloon Walled City in Hong Kong -- areas where the population have created their own sorts of internal ecosystems for one reason or another, living together in some kind of (likely rather tense) harmony. Ideally, these would be places where people have trotted out storefronts/small businesses, and have somehow either leeched off the public infrastructure or created their own. Bonus points if the residents are essentially unauthorized to live there. Nowhere in the US, please (though I'd still be interested in knowing). I already know about Dharavi, Kibera, and the Tower of David in Caracas.

When to tell a prospective partner about my immigration status?

I am residing illegally in a country (I would rather not say which one) and am dating. I reached out to a person on a dating site. We have only been on two dates, but I quite like them and the person seems very into me as well. I feel like since I asked them out the onus is more on me to tell them about my status than if they had asked me out. When should I tell? I want to wait in order to protect myself from even the slightest possibility of deportation, but I also want to be as honest and forthright as I can be to honor both the person I am interested in and myself. Chinese bootleg sensationalist dvd/vcd about 9/11

Does anyone know where to download any of these Chinese sensationalist pseudo-documentaries made of 9/11 that mix real news footage with clips from blockbuster films? They freely mix fact and fiction, using news footage and illegal clips from Hollywood films. There were three made, with the titles: 1) "The Century's Greatest Catastrophe" (I've also seen it called The Century's Great Catastrophe") and 2) "Surprise Attack on America" and 3) "America's Disaster: The Pearl Harbor of the Twenty-First Century"--all made in 2001. There is a report on them in an article that was in the New Yorker. Also mention of them made here. Since they are illegal mash-ups of existing source material, I don't mind if I have to download them from 'questionable' sites. But I'd really like to consult these films for a study I am writing, and would appreciate any pointers as to where to find them.

Help requested identifying a novel I read in the early 1990s involving Triads and illegal Chinese immigration.

Help requested identifying a novel I read in the early 1990s involving Triads and illegal Chinese immigration. There was an American who was tasked with transporting a Chinese illegal alien across parts of the western US in an automobile (car or pickup truck). I think his eventual destination was WA or OR, and parts of the story were in CA, in a sweatshop (I think). The Triads were involved. Any candidate titles or assistance is greatly appreciated. Thank you Thank you Thank you.

"He took too much LSD in the '60s".

"He took too much LSD in the '60s". No, really. Any number of Americans approaching old age are doing so with long-term illegal drug habits. If you've seen the Osbournes on TV, Ozzy seems the picture of the sort of cognitive impairment you can expect someone to have after years of illegal drug use. Is this typical of such a person? Can someone be rendered mentally incompetent by means of a history of long-term illegal drug use? Would someone with obvious cognative impairment like Ozzy still be considered legally competant?

Advise for illegal immigrant ?

A student at our university was recently shocked to learn that his mother and step-father are illegal immigrants who have been in the country for approx. 20 years. He was born in Mexico but has brothers and sister born in the U.S. His parents work, own a house here, ect. He has a job, is going to be a junior at the university and is planning on getting married. He has a Soc. Sec. card, but now wonders if it is even legit. He wants to find out what he should do next but is worried that he'll be immediately deported if he tries to get help. As a white-bread citizen, this is all Greek to me. What should I advise him to do?

The RIAA at La Grange (aka Mitch Bainwol Left Chicago)

I own a copy of Tres Hombres by ZZ Top. I'd like to get it into mp3 format so that I can listen to it in the car, etc. The problem is that the copy I own is on a record. Assuming I download with bittorrent, and then the RIAA comes after me, can I use the defense that I actually already owned it, so downloading could not be considered criminal? Would it be different if I owned a record rather than a CD? In other words, can you legally download the mp3 of an album you already own?
