Steroids will be the death of me....and my weekend

Hi, I'm a 20 year old college student (female). I'm at home on bed rest this weekend because I had a bad reaction to steroids (prednisone) for an allergic reaction. (kind of ironic right?) I'm feeling lethargic, dizzy and nauseous. Basically I'm miserable and wish I was in the hospital. What should I do so I can recover quickly to start going back to school Monday... and not be bored out of my mind? Should I literally stay in bed? I don't mind but it loses it's novelty after a while. [more inside]

Simple scientific guide for identifying and treating common illnesses?

When I start to feel a cold coming on, the last thing I want to do is spend time and energy trying to figure out the best treatment approach. I am seeking a guide that will help me identify and self-treat common/mild illnesses (both attacking the root cause and alleviating symptoms) as well as indicate when it would be wise to see a doctor. I would prefer a printout rather than an interactive tool like WebMD.

Does My Library's Bank Account Love Me or Hate Me?

I get a lot of books at the library. A LOT. For a while, it was 30-40 new ones/week but with overlap I'd have up to 50 out at once. With the smallest kids mostly out of picture books, I'm down to "only" having ~30 out at once, about 15-20 of which are new/week. I've always assumed it helps the library to have that much traffic because it helps show they need funding. However, I also do a lot of ILL... [more inside]

A head full of snot at altitude

In two days I will be taking a series of flights to travel from Australia to Europe for a very much needed month long break. Unfortunately I have a bad cold, secondary infections in my throat and sinuses and generally feel like crap. Given that 27 hours of travel time is not likely to be kind to me, how can I avoid turning up in Edinburgh in even worse shape? [more inside]

Bad coffee brew

Weird coffee question for baristas or home espresso machine owners: I decalcified my machine the other day and then got sick a couple of days later. Coincidence or connection? More inside: [more inside]

Why did this weed make me sick?

A tale of woe: I was walking in the woods and came upon a solitary cultivated plant which appeared to be marijuana by the shape of it's leaves. For reasons I can't explain (I've never enjoyed being stoned anyway), I picked one of the largely desicated 'buds' smoked it and within minutes felt horribly, horribly nauseated. What happened to me? Sick kit delivery in NYC?

Much like this question, I want to deliver a care package to a family member who is ill. However, I'm in Chicago, and she's in New York (Brooklyn, to be precise). I'd love to send her some matzoh ball soup, decongestants, tea, and other goodies for the infirm. Any suggestions? (My yahoo search inadvertently went to the web as a whole an I found this and I was all "Sweet!" until I realized it was just an idea.)

Sore throat. Uh-oh. My throat started getting sore yesterday around 3. Professionally, I need to be able to speak for the next three days (as I'm instructing a class all day long.) I already drink *tons* of water when I speak. What other things can I do?
