greetings my fronds i am looking for shelf bin solutions for narrow ikea dark brown billy shelves. [more inside]
This is sort of silly but we have this old IKEA lamp that has stopped working and I'd love to scour eBay for another only 1) it doesn't have the made up Scandinaviesque name anywhere on it and 2) every one of the million search strings I have tried has turned up nøthing. [more inside]
I'm looking for furniture options (ready-to-assemble, flat-pack, or other) for a small apartment (small living room, dining nook, bedroom, computer desk, etc) that are "easily" repack-able so I won't have to toss or donate them when I eventually move again. [more inside]
I'm trying to find additional shelves to fill out a couple of Ikea closets or wardrobes that came installed in my apartment. The problem is, I have no idea what the product is called (or even if it's still produced by Ikea), which makes finding replacement parts nearly impossible. [more inside]
My boyfriend and I are moving into a much smaller apartment, and would like to conserve as much space as possible. Is sleeping on a futon in the living room every night a reasonable arrangement? [more inside]
Do you have an Ikea kitchen? We're planning a kitchen remodel, and the pricing is very attractive. Is it worth it? Would you do it again? Any tips for how you went about doing it, particularly if you're not a DIY sort? [more inside]
Any experiences with Ikea warranties? We are girding our loins for a return and want to be best armed. [more inside]
What are the best non-furniture things from IKEA? Plants? Plants stands? Small storage? Hangers? Cushions? Gee-gaws? Open to suggestions, especially kid stuff and decorative stuff that's modern and inexpensive.
Which side of this Ikea Sultan foam mattress is up? [more inside]
We need to replace our 20 year old sofa and the Ikea Landskrona seems comfortable (we sat on it) and reasonably priced. If you have one, what's your review? [more inside]
I am so confused. Please tell me what kind of bed (& mattress) I should buy. [more inside]
I have a queen latex mattress from Ikea that's about five years old, though it's only been in active use for about four years. It's really, really, really firm, and I am thinking it might be making my sleep suboptimal. Is it time to replace it or just get a topper for it and wait another year or two? [more inside]
I love me Ikea's Toftbo bath mat because it's big, bright, colorful, and thin enough that my bathroom door can open and close over it. It's $10 in-person at Ikea and almost twice that much online from Amazon. Unfortunately, I live overseas and can't get to an Ikea store. Ideas on how to get one for the lower price? And, failing that, suggestions for a similar bathmat?
Ordered a table and two chairs off the Ikea website without doing my research about the apparently well known and possibly intentional mess Ikea calls a home delivery service. Am about to call customer service a second time. What should I ask for? How should I ask for it? [more inside]
I'm accumulating a lot of IKEA Samla plastic storage boxes, particularly the 11 x 7 x 5 ones, using them for toys (Lego, Hot Wheels, etc.). Has anyone found a shelving system that these will fit neatly into? Thanks! [more inside]
I have a tv stand mounted to my wall that appears to be this thing. Can someone tell me what it was, and how to get a new drawer for it?
I'm interested in buying a specific dresser at IKEA (Hemnes 3 drawer chest), but I am trying to fit it into a small nook and I need more specific measurements than they can give me. Would someone who has this dresser at home be willing to measure it for me? [more inside]
Can I use a single Ikea kitchen base cabinet without mounting it to the wall/using a ledger board? I am moving into a rental that doesn't have any cabinets on the side of the kitchen with the fridge and stove. There is space at the end/in the corner where I would like to put in additional storage. My first thought was a kitchen cart but now I wonder if I could get a single Ikea base cabinet (36 wide). [more inside]
I have this white IKEA Ektorp sofa with chaise lounge and I want a big, drapey, cheap, washable slipcover to protect it from my dogs. I can't find anything that fits both the couch and the chaise part. Help? [more inside]
IKEA has its own branded liquor. Who knew? I got the "snaps mix," five miniatures of beverages I'm unsure about. The set: svartvinbar; bittersot ortsnaps; akavit, kummin anis & fankal; akavit, kummin, dill & citrus; and citron & flader. That's all I have in English; the rest is in Chinese. So, any ideas about mixers for these little beauties, thoughts about which might be better without a mixer? Any insights whatsoever??! Thanks! Send air.
I fell in love with dark brown Markor bookshelves from Ikea, and bought five of them, eventually. Now I would like more shelving, and something very Markor-like would be lovely... but Ikea has long since discontinued the pattern. [more inside]
I wanted to get these IKEA slippers but I didn't get around to it before they went out of stock at my local IKEA. Where can I buy a similar pair of thick pillowy or quilted machine washable slippers online? Down would be nice but cotton/poly is OK, too.
I was going to buy an IKEA bookcase, but I looked at the instruction manuals for all the ones I'd like to get and they all have a thin, fake-wood back instead of a real wood back. I think this looks a bit corny, and I've seen thin backs get absolutely destroyed. Target's bookcases aren't any better. I'll buy a bookcase like this if I have to, but - are there any places that sell relatively inexpensive bookcases with actual wooden backs?
We have an Ikea Poäng chair. It's comfortable and the frame is in fine shape. The foam cushioning is in pretty good shape too. The fabric cover, however, is in rough shape. It's seen a lot of use and spent too much time in direct sunlight. It's (unevenly) faded and worn. Have you had a good experience replacing the cover through a third-party company? [more inside]
Due to some overzealous purchasing at Ikea, I have found myself with two extra slabs of bamboo tabletop. Any creative suggestions on what I can do with them? Would these be safe to use as cutting boards? [more inside]
Over the past year, my girlfriend and I have suffered through a series of mattress missteps to the tune of about $2500. Yesterday we were in Ikea and tried out the Sultan Heggedal mattress, which is $999 for a king. We were impressed both with the comfort and price of this mattress, but are trying to do some additional research so we don’t make the same mistake again. [more inside]
I just bought this desk from IKEA . It was a bit of a splurge, upgrading from a busted-up old kitchen table that I have been using for a desk for the last, um, well forever and never needing to worry about coffee spills and the like. Now that I have this new desk, I want to treat it right and make it look good until I am old and worn out. [more inside]
Ikea sells "exhaust hoods" like this Luftig for $379, and it sells "exhaust fans" like this Luftig for $99. How are they different that's worth $280? It can't be just the extra stainless steel and faux industrial style since this Eventuell which mounts under a cabinet sells for $499. [more inside]
Mr. TEA and I have just become responsible for furnishing a two-bedroom apartment in the Algarve. The apartment is in good condition but entirely empty. We would be furnishing it for family use and possibly for rental. My go-to furnishings store at home (the US), Ikea, is hours away, although I'm wondering if it would be worth the trip just for dishes, pots, pans, and glasses. I speak very little Portuguese, although Mr. TEA is more fluent.
I have a new, unassembled red 2x4 Kallax. I want it to be 2x3. Could a lumberyard easily cut down the two long-pieces? [more inside]
Last year, I bought a $20 synthetic MYSA STRA (warmth rate 1) comforter from IKEA. It fits perfectly inside my duvet, but it became a lumpy mess the first time it was washed. Granted, I only wash the comforter a few times a year, but still... it's a lumpy mess. I'm tempted to try the down MYSA VETE comforter, but I'm worried it'll also become a lumpy mess after one wash. I've never owned a down comforter before. Surely some of you own it. I'd appreciate any thoughts. Is it worth $90? [more inside]
My most pressing question: Do I need 8-inch pulls for the larger, 36-inch drawers? 7 inch? 12 inch? What fits that size best? What about the 30 & 24-inch drawers? Can I just grab one size and buy 40 of them and they'll all look good? [more inside]
I need to find, in the UK an affordable wingback armchair that actually comes flatpacked for my soon to be breastfeeding wife. [more inside]
We just got a nice new mattress. It came with a box spring. We were using our old mattress on an IKEA bed (the Redalen, which I guess they don't sell anymore) with their cheap wooden slats, the Sultan Lade, as support. All things being equal, we'd stick with the IKEA bed and slats. But are all things equal? Are there advantages to using the box spring instead of the slats?
Crate & Barrel has this modular shelving unit/desk hybrid which would be perfect for my needs, except the shelving unit doesn't actually hold very much. I thought IKEA had something similar but they don't really (their desk sticks out at a 90 degree angle from the shelves). Do you know of anyone who sells a shelving system like this (with a desk option) that will actually hold books. Thanks!
I'd like to configure a recessed niche part of a rec room wall with some floor-to-ceiling sliding doors, a la the Ikea PAX system. I recently picked up an Ikea piece and was gobsmacked to discover just how horrible they've become since the last time I bought any. [more inside]
Since moving cross-country several months ago, I've been gradually furnishing a small studio apartment. I decided that, for once, I'm not going to buy Ikea everything, and maybe try paying a little more for higher-quality quality items. Almost every one of my purchases has backfired. How much more should I be prepared to spend before I see reliable improvement in quality over Ikea and other lowest common denominator options? [more inside]
We just bought an ikea dining room table with the brown laminate, and we'd like to stain the plain wood ikea chairs we got to match. While we realize it will be difficult to replicate exactly, what stain or combination thereof can we use to get close to this color? The table looks a bit darker than what the product photos show, here's what it looks like in real life.
Some enthusiastic home dance party moves caused me to shatter one of the glass lampshades on this light fixture. I'd like to replace the shade, but I have no idea what lamp's brand or model is. Do you? [more inside]
I would like to to like to buy some IKEA-style furniture, and I'm willing to pay a premium of around £60-£100 so that I don't have to build it myself. But I can't find any way to buy any! Surely this must be possible? [more inside]
My recently purchased 1000 sq ft one bedroom apartment has terrible lighting, and I have no experience retrofitting lighting. What are the best resources for learning about lighting? Where can I buy decent light installations without breaking the bank? If I have a limited budget, what should be my priorities? [more inside]
I bought a light fixture yesterday at Ikea and I was all like YEAH THIS IS GOING TO BE SO EASY. Ha. Can you help me not die? [more inside]
Is it possible to find someone in the Bronx, or in NYC proper, who would do a hack for me on a FÖRHÖJA cart? [more inside]
Boston-area Mefites: share your wisdom! We are looking to furnish our Medford, MA, apartment. We'd like to shop at Ikea. The problem is, we don't drive (we aren't legally qualified, so Zipcar doesn't help). Ikea will deliver from the store, which is great but leaves one problem: How do we get to and from the store? Any advice helpful; more details inside. [more inside]
When I moved into my apartment, the previous tenant left behind his kid's twin bed, which has been sitting in a corner covered with books for the last year. I want to finally get rid of it (on Craigslist or similar) but I have no idea what the asking price should be. Details inside. [more inside]
I've got a black IKEA Expedit bookcase that I've used as a surface the last two years or so, and it shows. For various reasons, I can't really move it from where it is right now (it's part of some custom built in furniture). How can I repaint or restain this thing to look a little better? [more inside]
Is West Elm worth the price premium over Ikea? [more inside]
We are making a rare trip to IKEA tomorrow in part to get a table and chairs for our one-year old. What are other IKEA items that we should look at for him? [more inside]
We are moving into our first flat! Hooray! However, it is unfurnished, so we need to buy us some furniture - specifically, a good sofa and a good dining/gaming table. If we go Ikea, what's the sweet spot between price and durability? [more inside]
My desk is not deep enough for me to sit comfortably with the monitor at a distance. How would I go about anchoring a wood plank onto it that will hold the counterweight of a 24" monitor sitting on the overhanging edge? This picture should explain what I mean. Clamps? Nails? Screws? [more inside]
