VERY BRIEF 1940's German/English Translation Help Requested

Hello, Hive.

I'm working on a historical graphic novel and a portion of it involves four sentences in German. I've made an effort to hammer something out by testing Google Translate's gibberish against some German language textbooks and grammar sites. I'm sorta confident about them, but would love for any bilingual native German speakers to give them a once over. Particularly, if you have any insights into generational differences in the German language, as this piece is supposed to take place during WWII.

Posting them after the jump. • Warten Sie bei Childs Restaurant auf 34th Street
How to get the Galaxy Nte 2's Screen to stay on.

Samsung Galaxy Note II - How can I get the screen to always stay on while charging? In the settings under "Screen Timeout" I have only these choices:

15 seconds
30 seconds
1 minute
2 minutes
5 minutes
10 minutes

I dont have a choice for "Never" or "Screen On while Charging" or anything else like that.

I NEED to be able to glance at my phone 20-30 times per minute (not kidding) for information for work. I realize I may have to go to an app to make this happen, but at the moment I just spent $700 on a phone that is useless to me on my desk.

I have had multiple Android phones in the past, this has never been an issue.

P.S. I bought the Media dock. Doesn't do what I need it to do. I just need my phone, lying there, with the screen on.

HALP!!

TIA!

What to do with the Apple II?

What do I do with several Apple IIs (and a Commodore, and maybe a few other "vintage" comptuers) that I have? Nostalgia has finally given way to practicality, and I need to do something about the basement shelf overflowing with computers older than I am - but I have absolutely no clue how to do it. It seems wasteful to throw out a perfectly working Commodore 64 (in the original packaging!), or any of several models of Apple IIs with boxes of related 5.25" disk software. I read about a team at MIT creating cheap computers out of Apple IIs for developing countries, and while I can't find any further information for them online, donating to a cause like that would be awesome. Short of that, what else can I do to clean out the house? What's the best thing to do with these computers?

question about a plot hole in the movie Godfather II

Please explain to me, a plot hole in the movie 'Godfather II' There's something about the movie Godfather II that bugs me, and maybe someone can explain it (spoilers ahead, and pardon me if I get a detail or two mixed up, I last watched it a few months ago...):

Near the start of the movie, there is an assassination attempt on Michael Corleone (Al Pacino). It begins with him being in the bedroom with his wife, noting that the curtains are inexplicably open, after which machine gun fire erupts. Once the shooting dies down, Michael demands his trusted bodyguard Rocco that the assassins be captured alive. Rocco protests that this would be difficult, but Michael insists they be captured alive.

Michael then confides in Tom Haigen, his half-brother, that 'unless I'm very wrong, those men [the assassins] are already dead', because, he concludes, the assassins had help from the inside. Sure enough, a short time later, the bodies of the assassins are produced.

This issue - who is the traitor? drives Michael through the rest of the film.

So - who was the traitor? That is, who helped set up the assassination, even to the point of making sure the curtains of the bedroom were open?

1. Was it Fredo, Michael's brother? Fredo is later exposed as having helped Hyman Roth's group behind Michael's back and is eventually killed for it. But Fredo, if he helped the actual assassination, did so apparently unwittingly. That is, he did not recognize any help he gave Roth, would lead to an actual attempt on Michael's life (during the phone call in the middle of the night with Roth's representative, Fredo points out 'you lied to me before'). He is also characterized as being "weak" and "stupid", too clued-out for the guile, duplicity and underhandedness needed to betray his own brother.

2. Was it Rocco and the other bodyguards? Michael tells Tom this, saying that 'they're all businessmen' in response to Tom pointing out his troops are all trusted and loyal - Michael meaning they'd be willing to sell him out if the price was right.

So then how does this fit into things? Was Rocco and his subordinates in on it? Is this why, at the end of the film, when Michael orders the assassination on Roth, he gently but firmly insists Rocco not tell him it's impossible - an allusion perhaps to the start of the film, when Rocco demurred that it would be "difficult" to take the assassins alive? Is this a coded message to Rocco, telling him 'I know you had to be in on the attempt on my life, so you assassinate Roth or die trying as penance - or else...'

But if that's the case - his men are all purely mercenary - then why the witch hunt for the traitor? He answered his own question, someone else paid them off and the 'inside help' came from them.

(Or for that matter, why keep his bodyguards around at all, if they're that fickle and disloyal that they'd sell him out at the first chance?)

3. Or for that matter were they all in on it? Fredo, alienated by losing out on being Moe Greene's sidekick, and stepped on by Michael; Tom, shut out and ignored [Tom indeed was secretly planning on leaving the Family behind Michael's back], Rocco and his men, always looking for the best deal.

Any insight?

Diabetes, glucose, and food -- Oh my!

Type II Diabetes filter: How do measured glucose levels vary depending on how long it has been since eating? My husband was just recently diagnosed with Type II diabetes, based on an A1C reading of 7.3. He has made numerous lifestyle changes: careful food choices, no binging, regular exercise, eating three meals a day instead of one. (I nag very effectively, as you can see!) This has brought his second A1C reading down to 6.1, without any medication, so we feel like we're definitely on the right track.

But I keep wondering what the "curve" looks like if blood sugar readings are plotted against the hours since eating. A search of the internets hasn't turned up any generic curves we can use as a reference.

For example: His after-dinner blood sugar readings are usually done about 1 - 1-1/2 hours after having a Dannon Light Yogurt for dessert, instead of the 2 hour delay the doctor recommends. If he were to wait until the 2-hour mark before testing his blood, would the reading be higher or lower than the one he gets at the 1-1/2 hour mark?

If he were to take his blood sugar readings hourly, over several days, we could discover the curve empirically. This is not an option, though -- he would never go for it.

So I'm hoping one of you wonderful MeFi folks either knows the answer to my specific question or perhaps can point me to a generic curve that exists somewhere on the 'net.

How did Michael know?

Question about The Godfather Part II: How exactly does Michael figure out that Hyman Roth was behind the shooting at his home?

This is one of my favorite movies, and I've seen it many, many times, but I've always missed this plot point. OK, so Michael's home is shot up. He assumes (or at least appears to assume) Frank Pentangeli is behind it, because of the grievances Frank expressed at the beginning of the movie. Next we see him visiting Hyman Roth, and telling Roth that "Frank Pentangeli is a dead man", to which Roth replies "he's small potatoes". Then we see him visiting Frank Pentangeli at his father's old home, and telling him that he knows it was Hyman Roth. How does he know? Does he assume it's Pentangeli until he talks to him, and then it dawns on him that it was Roth during their conversation?

Where do I find data about 1940s newspaper circulation? I want to see what was going on with newspaper readership in the 1940s, before, during and after WWII. I think that newspaper readership went up during the war and am trying to find data to prove it! I'm looking for 1940s circulation statistics for some of the big newspapers (NY times, LA Times, Chicago Tribune & Christian Science Monitor). I am finding very little reliable information. Is there a reference librarian in the house who could point me towards a reference book or source?

Name-that-appleii-game-filter: I played it on an Apple IIe. When I was a children. And had nightmares about it. Remember, Apple ii game - the screen is black and green. Basically there`s an orphanage on fire, and orphans (or maybe they`re regular babies and the building just happen to be full of them) keep falling - or being thrown out of the window. You maneuver a trampoline. If you catch the children, they bounce to safety, otherwise, a really scary EEEEEEERRRRRRRGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH sound plays. This gave me nightmares back when I was a child, circa 1988 I think. I want to face my fears! Help me, hive mind!

Japan/ese-ophiles: Help me find out more about this WWII-era phenomenon in propaganda in Japan. I was told by a friend a while ago that during WWII, the Japanese government would often publish propaganda with combinations of kanji that didn't necessarily "mean" anything specifically, but intrinsically, logographically "felt" good.

Can anyone confirm this, and if so, can they expand upon the idea?

What caused this aneurysm?

WWII Medical Mystery Filter: Why did this young woman have an aneurysm? During World War II, a young woman in the UK is hit in the head by a boom at a munitions factory, but the 21-year-old woman seems to be okay. (No details available on what this means.) About two weeks later, she and her younger sister go on a trip to the seashore by themselves. While there, she gets her period and complains that she feels very ill and that her period is very heavy. The younger sister persuades her to stay just one more day.

The next day, they take the train back home. The young woman gets into the shower and calls her mother, who gasps at the amount of blood and rushes her to hospital. Tragically, the young woman dies in hospital. Doctors say the cause is an aneurysm.

Over the years, family members assumed the aneurysm was caused by the blow to the head. The younger sister has spent 60 years blaming herself for persuading her older sister to spend one more day at the beach.

Can a blow to the head result in an aneurysm that would lead to bleeding that would be mistaken for a period? It's possible that something else caused the aneurysm. And it's possible the doctors used aneurysm and the family assumed it was related to the head injury.. Perhaps doctors even used aneurysm vaguely. It does seem a little odd that an aneurysm would take place over a few days, but I am not a doctor.

What are some of the most important books about Japan's role in World War II? Read on... I'm trying to avoid Reischauer-esque pro-Emperor Hirohito propaganda... just honest story-telling from Japan's entrance to war-time atrocities to individual theatres and battles, and finally the atomic bomb, surrender, and occupation. I'd much rather read several more topic-specific books than a general history overview, but one or two overall narratives of the war might be okay too.
