we need our google maps

We are having Issues with IE6 and google maps not playing nice. it sits on loading. Where the picture is supposed to be, it just says loading. Works fine on IE7. and Firefox. some users can't use these browsers do to government programming. anything I found with Google was for programming API pages. Any help would be appreciated. the page says there is an error in the bottom bar. One error says it expected a ":" the next error says object expected. All the latest windows updates were applied. And newest version of java install. I figure other people out there may be having the same issue. It has become quite common this week. Thanks again for your time.

IE javascript bug is kicking my ass

Javascript/CSS and IE6/7: content called from a javascript file (a modified form of fontSizer) into an otherwise blank div appears and disappears intermittently in IE6/7. Help a newbie! I know enough Javascript to just squeak by, but this bug is bugging the hell out of me. The content written from a .js file (images and text) appears every time in Firefox but only sometimes in IE6/7. Sometimes a page reload will reveal it, sometimes returning to the page from another page on the site will reveal it.

My first guess was the peekaboo bug, but none of the fixes work and if I disable the pages' css the content still appears/disappears the same way.

The pages in question are still in development (i.e. not live), so MeFi Mail me for a URL.

Any ideas or suggestions on how to debug this are gratefully welcomed!

Need help fixing IE6 CSS bug... I've finally got all the bugs out except one. At the top of the navigation bar there is a horizontal gray line that should not be there. It does not appear in Safari, Firefox 2, or IE 7. Any idea what part of my sloppy code is causing it to appear?

How can I tell IE6 to open new windows to the right but NOT also moving down at the same time?

I use IE6 (6.0.2800.1106) on three different identical Windows 2000 systems. I recently installed tabbed browsing on one (with no change to version number). On the non-tabbed systems, when I open a new window, the new window opens a quarter inch to the right of the previous window. On the tabbed system, new IE6 windows open a quarter inch to the right AND a quarter inch down from the previous window. I don't like this behavior, but can't figure out how to disable or correct it. This occurs only for new IE6 windows, not new windows in other applications.

How can I tell IE6 to open new windows to the right but NOT also moving down at the same time?

IE6 css postioning bug

I am trying to get pure-css sidenotes to work, and have run up smack against a IE6 (but not 7) css-bug.
On this page the 'sidenotes' work fine in FF, Opera and IE7 & Safari (all on Windows), but move outside of the containing DIV in IE6.

The relevant CSS is:

p.nota {
width: 140px;
position: absolute;
margin: 0px;
padding: 0px;
left: 440px;
}

The full CSS file is here.
I am not above using an IE5-specific CSS hack.

IE6 Image Display Bug

In IE6, I occasionally get an image being covered by the background color of the div that contains it. Huh? If I have this (much simplified, both HTML and CSS) structure:

<div>
<div>
<div style="background-color: #fff;">
<p><img src="ie_blows.jpg" width="100" height="100" style="float: left;" />Howdy neighbors!</p>
<p style="clear: both;">Next paragraph, etc.</p>
</div>
</div>
</div>

In IE6, the page lays out as you'd expect, with a space for the image, but the #fff background color will be all you can see. Oddly, if you right-click, you can save the image, or view it in a new window, but it always displays behind the background of its containing div. So it's there but not there. This doesn't happen all the time, so it must be a combination of style attributes that causes this to happen.

I googled, probably not very precisely, trying to find if this is a known bug and what its trigger might be, but didn't see anything. IE7, FF, etc. don't have this problem.

I've tried a few different things but the only thing that actually works is removing the background attribute from the containing div, not a real elegant solution.

Longtime Mac/Unix guy seeks Win XP for virtualization -- but which version?

The new Mac's on its way, the time has come to purchase a copy of Windows to run under virtualization on it. The question is, which version? And how to customize by size for my needs? What I want to use it for: primarily testing web stuff in IE 6 and IE 7. Secondary use -- I'd like to learn basic .NET development. Chances are I'll also be running a few miscellaneous PC-only apps over time.

The first thing I'm wondering is if it matters in the least if I choose XP pro over XP home. I see the different lists of features out there on the net, but other than Remote Desktop, none of them mean much of anything to me. Are there real pros to pro, and cons to home?

The second thing I'm wondering is how it's possible to get legal very stripped down installations of Win XP a lá TinyXP -- I see it discussed here and there, but I'm a bit of a torrent n00b who's wary of random ISOs from fishy tracker sites and isn't quite sure how these things fit with the concept of legally running your software. How can I either make sure that I get a nice trustworthy TinyXP version that runs smoothly, or how can I do minimal/stripped-down installs myself from a retail copy?

Name that IE6 CSS Bug!

Help, CSS bugs! What IE6 bugs are these? The site looks fine in Firefox, Safari, and IE7. I've searched through the lists of bugs, but I'm not sure what bugs these are classified as, so I'm not sure how really to fix them.

Particularly:
1) why is the navigation spilling onto two lines;
2) why is the background of the text disappearing (I've tried removing the float without resolution)
3) why is the footer not lining up tightly against the bottom of the container?

Thanks in advance!

Hekp me move a div!

Javascript Noob: I need to move one div inside of another div that is elsewhere on the page. How do I do this? I've got an advertiser who places ads on my page using javascript. Unfortunately, his javascript is weird in IE6, and doesn't necessarily place the ad in the correct div. (It depends on the order in which his included javascript files download relative to mine.) It has a tendency to drop the ad outside of the positioned div i've created for it, in fact fairly far down the page.

I know what the div id is for the ad, and i know what div i want it to be moved to, and i know exactly when and where the advertiser places the div on the page (even in IE6), but how do i move it there?

All of my searches seem to return stuff about animation, etc. Not about re-organizing the DOM itself.

let's say for the sake of clarity:
my div id="my_div"
and the advertiser's div="ad_div"

Any ideas?

object for iframe

Using Object instead of iframe for Google Calendar embeds? A client wants to play with the idea of embedding a particular Google Calendar. Google does this via iframe like so:

Since I prefer to use XHTML 1.0 Strict, iframe, being deprecated, doesn't validate. So I use the object tag like so:

Works fine in Firefox. Effectively crashes IE 6.

My Google Fu is at yellow belt and though I can find that people are having similar problems, I haven't found the exact one, nor if there is a solution that doesn't include ie conditional hacks. Any suggestions would be welcome.

IE printing issue

Why won't Internet Explorer print images from a web site? The site is http://marriott.com/property/mapandnearbyairports/default.mi?marshaCode=gnvcy.

I had a user who was on the road and trying to print out the map. I got her to print a map of the area from Google Maps (worked fine), which solves the problem but not my curiosity.

At my machine, "Print Preview" shows only some text at the top and bottom but omits all images on the page, which is also how it prints. Firefox prints it correctly. The remote user confirmed the same IE behavior on her machine.

So what's on that page that keeps IE from printing the page correctly?

I have a ( WinXP using IE6 )webpage image viewing problem. First, I should admit that when it come to computers, I am stooopid, so please consider this when replying.

I have a Dell Inspiron laptop that has worked fine for a year. (Win XP running IE6) For the past couple of days, I have had trouble seeing some images, but not all, on websites. Most of them seem to be gifs, but I can see other gifs, and it appears that some of the images are jpegs. I tried system restore to Nov 9, but the message said there were no changes, even though I did download IE7 yesterday, after going to Windows Update. I ran One Button Checkup, but it still is happening. any ideas ?

I need to be universal baby :)

Can you help me recode one part of my blog / website so that it works in all browsers? (I think its an easy fix that I am over looking) I have a blog at www.mentaldribble.com. I love the new theme I found but there’s one problem. On the upper right hand corner where it says PAGES, CATEGORIES, ARCHIVES, when you mouse over it there is suppose to be a drop down list. It works in IE 7 but not 6, and I believe it works correctly in Firefox too but I would like it to work in all the browsers.

What can I change so the code works in IE 6?

Also - I recently added a few more categories and the drop down is interfering with the links on the left of the page and I cant seem to select any of the categories that overlap those permanent links on the left. Namely "virgin islands" category on the drop down overlaps the search box, and when I try to select that link the drop down list just disappears..

If you can suggest a better way to accomplish this drop down list, or can just fix the way it currently works, that would be AWESOME.

Thanks hive mind.

IE CSS Bug #65536: This page works fine in a real browser, but breaks in IE6. The boxes containing "Article 1" and "Article 2" should be to the right of the menu, but instead the text wraps around, and the black border stretches out as if the menu wasn't there. Please hope me. Here's the CSS.

How can I download Internet Explorer 6 as a single file for installation on another computer (running Windows 2000)? This page only seems to give the me the option of downloading a small install program but I still need to be online to actually install the whole thing. My Win2000 machine has IE 5.5 and I'm having trouble getting online.

Question number 5751

I use a whole bunch of PC's - three mainly, my laptop at work, and a desktop and laptop at home...I'd like to find a way of keeping my favorites synchronised on all three OR keeping them all in one place on the web and being able to access them...oh, and I'd like the solution to be 'free' and look cool...(is there an easy way to harvest the 500 favorites on my work laptop - and turn them into a web page?)

I use IE6 on all of my PC's....but some web based solution would allow me to access all my links from other machines/browsers.

I've got some kind of adware on IE 6.0 that is putting hot links on MetaFilter and other pages for certain keywords, like "Photoshop" or "diamonds". The links lead to search engine websites. It is really gumming up the works. I've tried Spybot but that didn't remove it. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

PNG and IE6. I seem to recall reading about an active x plugin that enabled IE5.5+ on PC to properly support alpha transparency in png files. After googling, I couldn't find one. I did find lots of work arounds and hacks that are ugly and difficult to implement. There must be a solution.
