I'm looking for recommendations for contemporary, ambient drum-n-bass. Or, if the genre names have shifted, something that does the same for me as the less bombastic output of LTJ Bukem.
I have Chrissy Murderbot's
mix, and that's also a good benchmark, though I think that comprises older stuff, too.

On Friday I'm going to Birmingham (Sutton Coldfield) for three months (until early may) for an engineering internship. What should I know? What's the Birmingham area known for amongst Britons? What should I absolutely not miss in my down time? What social norms (at work or otherwise) might be unusual to me? What do locals do for fun? What parts of the city should I wander around in to get a sense of the place (and in which areas would doing so get me killed or served with an anti-social order)?

What are some of your favorite obscure electronic music singles? I'm looking for the kind of stuff where an otherwise unremarkable or unrecognized artist managed to release one perfect song.

DAWs are cool, but I really like the feel of instruments in my hands. Where can I obtain potentially-electronic-music-producing electronic gadgets, oscillators, noise machines, etc. in Southern California?

Spurred on by what happened at
Czechtek, I'm trying to find more out about electronic musicians from the Czech Republic. The trouble is, I don't speak Czech.
Does anyone know of any great Czech producers, or of any web translation sites that reliably do Czech to English so I can do more research?

There's a certain kind of very fast but largely unrhythmic IDM beat. I've heard it for example in Aphex Twin - Girl Boy song, and some ยต-Ziq. It's a kind of highly cut up, apid, sometimes somewhat tonal skittering drum programming that sounds like it would be unbelievably slow to put together in a sequencer. I get the sense think such a distinct sound is associated with certain equipment or techique, anyone have any ideas?
