I am trying to think of all possible popular cultural references to the following event:
Person finds him or herself in a foreign land and is mistaken for the local/regional god.
I can only think of two times when this happens but I know it happens quite a bit more in tv/fiction/movies etc.

Can I lend my girlfriend my debit card? She is visiting from overseas and might want to go buy groceries or stuff while I'm at work. We don't have a bunch of cash to hand nor any great desire to visit an ATM and withdraw some. Can I just lend her my debit card and tell her the PIN? It has my name on it, and it's pretty obviously not her name...

Socializing “across the tracks”. My father grew up poor, and is now working a blue-collar job. My mother grew up upper-middle class (except the first 8-9 years), went to college, and is working in a decent profession. Because of their backgrounds, they’re really different people. Being their daughter, I take on the characteristics of both. As a result, I cannot fully identify with neither middle-class or working-class (or even poor) people. Nor, am I fully accepted by either group.

My cousin's Facebook account was compromised and some person or bot is sending spam to his Facebook friend list. He canceled his Facebook account a month ago, but spam keeps arriving in my email box -- as if my cousin is still a Facebook member. The spam seems to be arriving from a legitimate Facebook domain.

This one's for the Mrs: As a successful freelancer in a creative industry (writing-ish), is it enough to have a decent website and nice business cards, or is it worth it to a hire a graphic designer to come up with a business "brand" or "identity" for you? (And what should this involve besides just a logo?)

How exactly does authentication work in a website like
Basecamp, or more generally, a site built on Rails or LAMP. When I sign-up, I enter a username and password. I presume this is stored in a database table. But after that, how does the server know who I am during the course of my 'visits' and how does the SQL database know what I have access to ( only my projects ) and what I don't have access to ( Other peoples projects)? Where do cookies, if at all, come into play. If cookies do come into play, can they not simply be forged? I am completely clueless regarding the subtleties of authentication, user sessions, and security. Please enlighten me.

Am I being lied to? I am receiving threatening/harassing emails from several yahoo accounts, but the person/people involved all have IP addresses that trace to a single university. The university has an IT Security Officer who tells me that he's done everything he could to track the IPs (they are all different but from the same institution) and he can't pin them to a single computer or person. I do not necessarily believe him. I have looked at
other questions and answers, but would like to know what you think. I should mention that a login and password is used to access the network at this institution, even for the wireless network.
