At what point do you start worrying about your children's credit reports?

The other day my 13 year old received an application for a Discover Card in the mail. At the time, I dismissed it as junk mail. Trans Union mentions that receiving applications may be a sign of a problem, and even has a site related to the issue here. While diving into a fraud investigation request for one application seems overkill, how common is this, and at what point does one start monitoring all this? [more inside]

Credit monitoring? Identity theft protection? Wouldn't it have been cheaper to just encrypt the data?

A few months ago, SAIC lost a backup tape with the names, social security numbers, addresses, and medical treatment information of roughly 5 million TRICARE patients in the San Antonio, TX area between 1992 and 2011. My name was amongst them, and I'm being offered a year of "credit monitoring and restoration services" as compensation. Are there any downsides to taking it? Any real upsides? [more inside]

Is my doctor astroturfing his online reviews?

I have a consultation with a plastic surgeon in NYC to talk about tattoo removal next week. I made the appointment based on unanimously glowing reviews posted online. Now, reading through the reviews again, I've been struck by certain details that make me wonder if these comments are mostly an astroturfing campaign. I've been waiting awhile for my appointment, so I don't want to cancel if I'm just being paranoid. Help me out, Mefi Sleuths. [more inside]

I've been caled a lot of things, but nothing I would call a name.

My younger brother is doing a Peace Corp stint in Senegal. His host family (with whom he's staying while he learns the language) has taken to calling him by the name of their son of the same age. While I'm sure this is a gesture of welcoming, I find it very odd. Is this customary? What's the convention and where does it come from. [more inside]
