So, walking with the dog in a local land preserve today, we came across an artillery piece. Placed there sometime, I'm sure, in the last 50 years by the former property owner (who has since donated the land). Can anyone identify this? (No, there hasn't been a major battle anywhere near here, that little skirmish we had with Ohio over Toledo took place 60 miles south of here, and that was in 1836)
A friend found this picture in the basement of his apartment building, and it's killing us to try to figure out who it is. A roomful (OK, a barful) of people were convinced that it is "someone", but we can't quite place who. If it weren't for the teeth, I'd almost say it's Andy Griffith, but, you know, perfect teeth. What are these? The starlings that nest in our eaves drop them all over our deck. The one on the left is fresh - it fell on my head just before I took the photo - and the other is at least several days old. We are in San Francisco. Nothing in our backyard produces things with seeds/pits except our Meyer lemon tree. Any ideas?
I've only recently started listening the the Beastie Boys' Ill Communication (after picking it up damn near two decades ago), and in the track Futterman's Rule, I'm hearing what I swear is a Zappa theme, but I'm darned if I can figure out which one. I thought it was Apostrophe, but it doesn't seem to be, and Google is offering no evidence that I'm hearing what I think I'm hearing. Anyone able to identify the Zappa theme, if there is one in there? I'm going nuts.
Cleaning apt. of a deceased friend. Their mattresses were on the floor - a boxspring, and a mattress on top. Found these bugs in between the boxspring and the mattress. [more inside]
My friends have a house-sit. The house's owners possess two of these objects. We don't recognize them. The blades are sharpened, and they were stored beneath the sink. We have some strong theories, but no real answers. The owners are Bangladeshi Americans, if that helps. [more inside]
I think it's a recent song - The chorus has has a woman singing in a simple voice. She sounds young and has a neutral accent - the non-chorus parts of the song I think is a reggae hip hop deal, but not sure. [more inside]
Woke up to this bird squawking in my backyard in north central Texas. Obviously the video quality is not great, but can anybody help me identify it based on its call? Mississippi Kite? Hawk? And do they eat kitties? For perspective, its on top of a 30ft bald cypress tree. It appears to be at least 18-24 inches from head to tail.
I'm looking for a mini flash game that I used to play back in the day (I would say, 2006?) that if I remember correctly had graphics similar to critter crunch Their were a bunch of mini games and it looked Japanese. I have been dying to find it again, but this is all I can remember about it. I'm hoping one of you knows what I'm talking about. Anyone?
I was just going over our flight info-my husband and I and our two adult daughters are flying out to Texas to my son's wedding. I just noticed that our travel agent used my younger daughter's maiden name instead of her married name (she is separated but not divorced.) The travel agent is calling me back in a bit but how screwed are we? [more inside]
I have a Challenge to all antique hand tool buffs. I'd really appreciate knowing what this tool is and what it was used for... The tool consists of a brass piece mounted to a wooden handle. The tool measures 6 3/4 " in total length. At the high point of the brass forefront, it is 1 15/16 ". The brass piece is 1 5/8 " wide. It has a tool stamp of 'IDEAL TOOL COMPANY' in raised letters on the reverse side of the upright brass fixture. I could not find anything like it on the Ideal Tool Company Antique website... I would greatly appreciate your expert opinions as to what it is and was used to accomplish. Thank you for your professional and generous offer to identify this hand tool piece !
I'm looking for an essay I read in a textbook. This would've been in the late 90s and it was a middle school Literature textbook. The essay was about writing. I remember that it included a bit about how you can't ask writers about writing for the same reason you can't ask the sea about itself (it will just gurgle at you). It also had a bit about breaking the rules when writing, talking about how writing guides tell you never to open a story with dialogue but then gave an example of a classic novel that opened with dialogue in French. Okay, so there was this show (maybe on the USA network?) around 1990-ish, maybe. The premise was that a former superspy/secret-agent/hero had retired to the suburbs, and his former archnemesis moves into the house next door. They're still kind of enemies, but in a Simpsons/Flanders "friendly" way, instead of trying to kill each other like they used to. What is this show? [more inside]

I remember this illustrated children's book from the 1970's, a vaguely Arthurian fantasy with anthropomorphic pigs. I think the main character was named "Hamlet" and there were other pig themed puns. He had an Excaliber-like sword that was all rusty and bent up. Please help me find it again. [more inside]

I saw this tall teapot in the British tv-show Wartime Farm, so it's possibly British and from the 40s. I'd love to know what style it is, or anything that could help me find something similar - I've had no luck searching myself. Screencap of teapot
What is the piano sample in the Jeremih/Sheek Louch track "Party After 2". For some reason I've always thought it was a George Gershwin sample, but I can't track it down. [more inside]
What the heck is this plant bubble thingy? It's sitting in a vase at a restaurant in Bloomington, Indiana next to some little purple flowers (probably a different plant). It's pale green and purple with little hairs on it. It's about the size of a racquetball. [more inside]

In the mid-ninties, there was this techno song with a vocal instructing the listeners to raise up their hands, "raise them up." His voice was calm and could've been sampled from a movie (it was not like the more cliched sample of a dj or singer revving up the crowd, it felt almost religious). What was the name of this song? One of a number of painting/pictures I acquired recently is of a statue in which a man is holding a tetrahedron (pic 1 | pic 2). I am fascinated by the image, but have no idea about actual information about the statue. Artist, title, location, intended subject matter, etc., etc. Any help in identification and/or additional info would be great! [more inside]

I am looking for a pair of glasses / companies which produce eyewear which have two metal cylindrical posts as their style. Brands appreciated. I have so far been looking at Oliver People and Salt Optics but would like to broaden my research and options. Any history (who originated it)/name to this style would be appreciated! Cheaper alternatives will also be considered. Examples: 1, 2. Thanks!
