I'm a bird! I'm a bird! I'm a bird!... but what kind?

The birdsong in question! This is a bird in southeast Portland, OR. We've never caught a definite glimpse of it, so I cannot give any details on size/color/et cetera. This is its main song (although it was singing kind of short this day); it cycles this for an hour or more. It varies slightly at some point, but then comes back.

Song ID: something about liking/not liking popcorn?

It's sung by a woman in some kind of retro rock-y style that I can't quite articulate. It's a list of foods that girls either.. like or don't like, and the chorus is about popcorn.. I think. Challenge: pretty sure this is from a Portland, OR band, as I heard this on the local Portland-centric radio station KZME. [more inside]

It's a dress AND a painting!?

There's an artwork on public display in my community that isn't labeled with the artist's name or the title of the piece, and I'd like to know more about it. The facility that has it on display doesn't have the information, so I'm hoping you could take a look at it (or just read my description) and tell me if you know more about it, or where I could find out who created it and what it is called. It's a rather unique piece, being a full-length overcoat that's been hardened/cast and mounted on a large canvas. The yellow floral pattern of the coat is seamlessly transferred to the background of the canvas. For a link to a phone-cam pic I took of it, click [more inside]

Children's Book Including a Spaghetti Sandwich

My partner and I were remembering our differing childhood experiences of homemade spaghetti. At one point, she brought up using the leftovers in a spaghetti sandwich. I've never had one, but this triggered a vivid memory of a favorite picture book which had at least one illustration of a spaghetti sandwich. Among other odd sandwiches, possibly. I'd love to remember the title of the book and, ideally, see that illustration. [more inside]

Typographers of the World, Unite!

I'm vector-izing this header plate from an old edition of my labor union's newspaper for use in future editions. Obviously I'll be tracing the hand-lettering of "Industrial Worker", but I'd like to find a font that matches as closely as possible the sans serif lettering used for "Labor Produces all Wealth..." and the slogans on the banners.

Seeking a series of fantasy/war books from the 1980s

You know how you can just remember a few details about some subject from your youth, and it's going to bother you until you can reveal the full scope of that memory? Yeah, I'm right there. I'm looking for a series of books. They were in the SF/F section in the 1980s. They were probably popular because their covers resembled Frazetta prints, and they tended to be really violent (i.e. jumping on the popularity of Conan). [more inside]

Unwanted Stuff On My Cat

My cat had something on his fur, near his left rear thigh, that looked like a slug. It was about an inch long and 3-5mm wide, black, and shiny. He is a fraidy cat who will not tolerate being touched. He only just tolerates playing chases with a piece of string, so I spent some time with him this morning doing just that and trying to take a picture. I was not able to get a picture that was clear enough. He actually washed around whatever it was, but only once, and he didn't dislodge it in the process. We tried to catch him and failed. He got outside. Since he has so many hangups it is possible that he won't come back and likely that he won't trust us for another six months if he does. He only knows a few words, but "vet" is one of them and he has a very strong reaction to that one, so the effects of stuffing him into a pet carrier can only be imagined, even if we had any hope of accomplishing that now. So: what external feline parasite looks like a slug, is about an inch long and lurks on the fur near the thigh, and what do we do about it in the unlikely event that we get the chance?

Identification of a wild plant

I am trying to identify a wild plant at the edge of my property. I live in Montreal. The plant is growing under the canopy of a large maple, and it is growing as a thick colony. The plant resembles honewort (AKA wild chervil – Cryptotaenia canadensis), but it does not have a taproot. Instead, it has rather thin, shallow, spreading roots that seem to give rise to new plants. Each plant consists of three or four smooth stems. At the top of each stem is a leaf divided into three leaflets. Cross-sectionally, the stems are triangular. The leaves and stems smell somewhat like parsley or celery when crushed. Although this colony has been on my property for many years, I have never noticed any flowers, which suggests that they are small and inconspicuous. The plants are presently 30 to 35 cm tall. Please see attached photos. Thanks for your help.

Who is that smooth character?

Between sketchily edited track titles, Google Play music uploads, and Bluetooth stereo sync, somehow a Chinese character (link to picture, with apologies for sun glare) got encoded on the artist title of this song playing on my car stereo. Can any sinologists out there identify this character? I know it's just an artifact, but maybe it's something serendipitous.

Fungus ID!

Found behind some shingles while new insulation was being installed. This is very near the dryer outlet, which had partly fallen back and so wasn't venting quite as well at it should. So the theory is that this is due to heat/moisture from the dryer. Also seems to only be on the surface. Is it anything to worry about? We have Exhibit A and Exhibit B. It's white/white-ish and very fibrous.

What kind of plant is this?

I inherited an existing plot in a community garden a few weeks ago, and there was a medium sized plant that seemed pretty established, so I left it alone. It is now an extremely large plant.
