What plant?

These leaves have been sitting in water for almost a year after being included as part of a flower arrangement. They have not formed any roots in the water, but recently started growing new leaves out of some buds in the bottom of each leaf. Can you identify them? Photos: 1 2 3 . Thank you,

What book about BASIC programming did I read as a child?

I'm trying to remember a book I read about BASIC game programming when I was a child. I don't know the exact publication date, but it would have been in the late 1980s or early 1990s that I borrowed it from the library. It was about how to write a text adventure game set under the ocean. Can you help me? [more inside]

Short story ID: marketer helps niche group hide from marketers

Trying to identify a short story in which someone whose job is to identify emerging groups of people with specialized interests and target them as niche markets turns those skills to helping some group hide their purchases and whatnot to evade that kind of targeting. Maybe the group being helped contained some relatives of the marketer? I'm pretty sure I read it within the past 15 years, and it's possible it was in one of those annual collections of SF short stories (like Dozois's series).

Who is the Senegalese musician in the video in the Field Museum?

When I was on vacation in Chicago last year I stopped by the Field Museum and happened to catch a video in the Senegal exhibit of a musician playing and singing a song that I thought was really beautiful. Does anyone know who is in the video and/or the name of the song?

What is this thing?

I saw this object on a table outside a thrift shop in a small town in eastern Washington State, US. It is about 3 feet long and made out of hard plastic. A working theory is that it has something to do with some kind of crafting activity, possibly quilting.

Science Wanted: kitchen powder identification edition

I have a large tupperware full of a crystalline white powder. It could be sugar, or it could be xylitol. How can I tell? So far I've found two possible ways: burn it and record the energy per gram; feed it to dogs. I would prefer not to do the second, as xylitol kills dogs. I'm open to the first, if someone wants to link me to a good experimental method for such. But I'd really love a third way.

I'm a bird! I'm a bird! I'm a bird!... but what kind?

The birdsong in question! This is a bird in southeast Portland, OR. We've never caught a definite glimpse of it, so I cannot give any details on size/color/et cetera. This is its main song (although it was singing kind of short this day); it cycles this for an hour or more. It varies slightly at some point, but then comes back.
