A friend recently downsized from a large house to a small apartment near the beach. That makes two adults and a dog living in a (700 sf? I can't be sure) home. What is a gift that I could give that wouldn't just be clutter, or better yet could improve their household? Obviously it should be small, and it has to be something the TSA won't confiscate because I will be flying across the U.S. to visit.

Recently in a social situation I was asked my thoughts on a budgeting item and I gave it along with a solution that I had given thought to and was planning on presenting to the budget chair. (We work in different departments but run things past each other on occasion). One of the people at the gathering was a woman with political ambitions for our small town. A few days later she wrote a letter to the editor that gave my exact idea. What would you do? On the plus side it was very well received, OTH it was mine. I realize I should have said nothing and it was my mistake. I figure people that were there would know it wasn't hers and hopefully someone will point that out. Can I address it or should I leave it?

Friends (couple and their gorgeous 2-year-old) are moving from the UK to LA (via NYC for a month or two). Do you have any fabulous gift ideas? I don't want to get them a physical thing to lug around so maybe a pre-paid something, or an experience - something I could buy online and give them a printout tomorrow would be perfect. Thanks!
CHALLENGE TIME! You are lent some expensive, professional grade video equipment for 18 hours and told that you may use it as you see fit in the time you have. Assuming little to no preparation beforehand, what do you do and/or film with it? Ideally you'd like the owner (or anyone else who sees your work) to be mildly impressed, knowing that you have no actual solo film making experience whatsoever. [more inside]

Grad Night Party question. 95 high school grads, on our way to the first of two secret venues. We have an hour to kill at a nearby school. We have ice cream, cupcakes, cookies. It will be dark. What do you suggest to make it more fun? This is a no drinking, no drugs, kids on buses, with chaperones event. We have a few 100$ to spend. Oh, it's this Tuesday. Thoughts?

What makes for a good elementary school newspaper? What makes a great one? I'd like to know what parents appreciate (and what they'll actually read). I'd like to know what you liked best when you were a student, either from a contributing or reading standpoint. I'd like to know from school employees/authorities what one needs to be mindful of. And I'd be very glad to know of what I can do to avoid any problems. I'd like to know from teachers about what school newspapers can do for students; and what one could reasonably ask for from the various grades to allow for students to make contributions and so the content is balanced for all ages. I'd love to see links to anything inspiring, and to ideas for content and design and such. So, I'd like a lot of information about stuff I have an idea about, but not much practice with yet. And that's a lot to do with three double-sided pages, I know. [more inside]

I'm a web developer with enough proven abilities to develop good stuff that end users like. I'm employed, but want to start a business with a couple of friends with complementary skill sets in the technical side of things. We'd like to create one or more web-based products used by small-to-mid-size businesses and/or individual consumers, paid for on a monthly basis using a "software as a service" model. We've got more than enough combined development and graphical/UX design abilities, but we have no solid product ideas that we feel confident enough about to start doing the enormous amount of work involved in any of them. The main problem with any idea we get is this question: how on Earth do you convince anybody to pay you money for the product? [more inside]
