My step-daughter's 16th birthday is right around the corner. Like, 8 days away. We always ask her what she wants to do on her birthdays and usually she comes up with something like renting out a place to play laser tag or going to the water park or whatever and we are more than happy to give that to her and she invites friends and there is food and drink and merriment and Huzzah!
This year, it could go bad. I need some help! [more inside]

Lastminutegiftsfilter: My boyfriend's birthday is coming up soon, and I have no idea what to get him! We're both geeky but his interests run far more deep than mine do in terms of comic books and gaming and things like that. The problem is: he owns everything already! I plan on consulting with his roommate, who shares many of his interests, but I'd love some input from the hivemind on this. For reference, he's 28, works at a video company and we both live in Los Angeles. [more inside]

My boyfriend is a very spiritual devotee of Krishna (via ISKCON). Before we were dating he lived in an Ashram for a while, and has been involved with the temple since he was in early high school. I'm happily Jewish, and not personally disposed toward that sort of devotion, and I think sometimes my inability to understand comes off as skeptical or disapproving.
His birthday is coming up in about a week, and I'd like to get him something, or do something for him that will demonstrate a commitment to his spirituality - or at least something that shows I'm trying. I'd love your suggestions. More details beyond the fold. [more inside]

I thought it might be fun to race around like giddy kids with my wife for her birthday. she loves Formula one and has expressed an interest in racing go-karts. We both can drive but do not own a car as we live in brooklyn and have no need.
Any ideas on where to race go-karts near nyc?
(I found this place: gpny.com, and it seems to fit the bill..but are there other options?)
Anyone else had any similar experiences trying to find place to race?
Extravagant test-drive a real car on a track option?
f1 model kit?
(thank you as always)

I have a very good friend and colleague and our organization is surprising her for her 60th birthday this Friday at a supposed TGIF. She's a Chinese American and very proud of her roots, so I'd like to get her something special or do something because of this. She celebrates all of the traditional Chinese holidays and still speaks the language with her family members. I being Anglo as they come, don't have any good ideas or much time left, so any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks!
