The kid has a birthday coming up! Help me weasel out of her plan!

My step-daughter's 16th birthday is right around the corner. Like, 8 days away. We always ask her what she wants to do on her birthdays and usually she comes up with something like renting out a place to play laser tag or going to the water park or whatever and we are more than happy to give that to her and she invites friends and there is food and drink and merriment and Huzzah! This year, it could go bad. I need some help! [more inside]

Which EU law mandates specified ideas are given positive press coverage?

Positive symbols/reminders of death?

Lately I have been catching myself remembering that I am going to die one day. I think, like like Steve Jobs that remembering this fact is important. I'd like to get a tattoo on my hand, or somewhere visible as a daily reminder, "you are going to die one day". However I would like to find a symbol that represents the opportunity and responsibility of that fact, not the fear of it (like a skull). Any help?

Song lyrics re-enforce like a mantra?

I've been looking to no avail for research into the content of song lyrics re-enforcing ideas like a mantra in the mind. Does anyone know of any research into this? We learn by repetition so one would imagine the brain isn't selective. Brand re-enforcement advertising works this way so lyrical content should too?

Ideas for Bride/Groom Wedding Shower Gifts - Outdoors/Nature Inspired

My two good friends are getting hitched in September. Both are going to be present at the 'wedding shower'. I'm trying to come up with a good gift to give them that is outdoor/nature themed. My original idea was to get them something like a double person sleeping bag (way too expensive though.. $200+) and now I'm still trying to put something together. I will probably add in a giftcard with $20 on it for them to purchase midnight snacks, smores ingredients. As their wedding gift I will be getting them the National Park Annual Pass which is why I'm hoping their gift now can be used during their camping/hiking adventures. They have all the typical gear like tents, boots, etc. Any other clever ideas out there?

Internet free "retreat" on the East Coast(ish)

I am looking for somewhere nice to go for around five days to clear my head. This mainly means no internet for me as I could really do with a break. I'd like it to be sunny, warm, maybe quiet, and rural too although I am not superkeen on nature (such as bugs and dirt :)). I have been looking into monasteries in upstate New York but perhaps there are better options out there? I would like it to be low-budget - and would be happy to work for shelter/accommodation as well. Something to do with my hands, like gardening would also be neat, although I am not into camping. I love travelling by rail, not so much by coach/bus. I don't think I'm gonna wanna be driving as I haven't in many, many years. Any recommendations? [more inside]

Down the drain

For 6 weeks, due to a broken septic tank, we have been unable to put any water at all down our drains. This has involved driving to the gas station/grocery store/town park/etc every time we had to go to the bathroom. It has meant keeping buckets in all of our sinks for tooth brushing/dish washing/etc that we have to empty in our driveway whenever they fill up. It has meant either showering at the pool or, if in a rush, stopping up the drain in the bath tub and showering before work and then bucketing out the water when returning home. It has basically been like living in a 250k tent with climate control and real beds. On Monday (purportedly) it will finally be fixed. We want to have a big, water-usage themed party (sorry, environment) to celebrate this miraculous victory. Please help with suggestions. [more inside]

Explanations of your favorite deep and meaningful ideas

I still remember vividly the moment that I got the idea of entropy in information theory; I spent weeks seeing the world in those terms, and playing out the implications (as I understood them). Likewise Nietzschean "eternal recurrence" -- not just as a hypothesis about things repeating on a cosmic scale, but to see if the world and history can be taken as a choice, as something we can affirm. What are your favorite deep, rich, meaningful concepts to think with? (They don't need to be scientifically accurate, necessarily, or something you personally believe -- just things that offer the pleasure of understanding, for you.) Links to explanatory resources, or explanations in the comments welcome, or just names and starting points. [more inside]

Oh no you didn't

Recently in a social situation I was asked my thoughts on a budgeting item and I gave it along with a solution that I had given thought to and was planning on presenting to the budget chair. (We work in different departments but run things past each other on occasion). One of the people at the gathering was a woman with political ambitions for our small town. A few days later she wrote a letter to the editor that gave my exact idea. What would you do? On the plus side it was very well received, OTH it was mine. I realize I should have said nothing and it was my mistake. I figure people that were there would know it wasn't hers and hopefully someone will point that out. Can I address it or should I leave it?

Practical yet Attractive Uses for narrow-necked glass bottles?

I have a few old glass bottles which I've cleaned, de-labeled, and given airtight cork tops. They're attractive bottles, about 750ml each with narrow tops, and I'd like a practical way to show them off ideally in the kitchen. Gift in LA

Friends (couple and their gorgeous 2-year-old) are moving from the UK to LA (via NYC for a month or two). Do you have any fabulous gift ideas? We ain't got no budget!

CHALLENGE TIME! You are lent some expensive, professional grade video equipment for 18 hours and told that you may use it as you see fit in the time you have. Assuming little to no preparation beforehand, what do you do and/or film with it? Ideally you'd like the owner (or anyone else who sees your work) to be mildly impressed, knowing that you have no actual solo film making experience whatsoever. [more inside]

What To Get The Vaishnava Who Has Everything?

My boyfriend is a very spiritual devotee of Krishna (via ISKCON). Before we were dating he lived in an Ashram for a while, and has been involved with the temple since he was in early high school. I'm happily Jewish, and not personally disposed toward that sort of devotion, and I think sometimes my inability to understand comes off as skeptical or disapproving. His birthday is coming up in about a week, and I'd like to get him something, or do something for him that will demonstrate a commitment to his spirituality - or at least something that shows I'm trying. I'd love your suggestions. More details beyond the fold. [more inside]
