I want to map (or model, or some other word, not really sure what to call this) a whole lot of things that all pertain to a broad topic. My hope is to visually represent a lot of things, such as relationships, goals, tactics, gaps/needs, strengths, etc. Is there any type of software that does this sort of thing? [more inside]

I was just wondering if you come up with an idea for a social media type site, how do you go about protecting the idea as your own? Is there some sort of intellectual property or something you can get on it? [more inside]
Writing a script, need a few believable, throwaway lines for a character. A guy running a TGI.Friday's-like bar praises his bartender, a math genius, for giving him an idea that saves money and improves the business overall. An example of outside-of-the-box thinking that enforces that our math-genius-in-disguise really is a genius. Bonus points if the idea skirts the line of legality -- something funky with accounting, maybe? [more inside]
Recently in a social situation I was asked my thoughts on a budgeting item and I gave it along with a solution that I had given thought to and was planning on presenting to the budget chair. (We work in different departments but run things past each other on occasion). One of the people at the gathering was a woman with political ambitions for our small town. A few days later she wrote a letter to the editor that gave my exact idea. What would you do? On the plus side it was very well received, OTH it was mine. I realize I should have said nothing and it was my mistake. I figure people that were there would know it wasn't hers and hopefully someone will point that out. Can I address it or should I leave it?
Can you share examples of innovation programs in companies that you are aware of? How do they measure the outcomes of such programs?
Can you share examples of innovation programs in companies that you are aware of? How do they measure the outcomes of such programs? I know Google used to or still has a program where in employees work on projects of their choosing for 20% of their time. Any thoughts around steps that can be taken to increase innovation in an IT organization would be helpful.
halloween question: we're 2 ladies wearing these ridiculous orange sparkly pouffy prom dresses, and we're thinking of putting pumpkins on our heads. what clever thing could we be? how could we make our costumes super awesome? we're thinking "pump-queens" or something. can you be more creative than that? something clever or punny would be fantastic! thank you!
I have a serious project proposal for Google. I don't need to make money on it, but I'd like to get it looked at. I've been poking around their websites, and have found places to submit business and partnership ideas, but I'm really not sure that those are the right way to submit this concept. It's something on the order of Google Art Project, but different from that. What would you recommend or link me to? Thanks!
It's easy for people to assume that the usefulness of something to them is the same as its wider purpose for existing. What's the quotation, literary situation, fable, or famous saying that sums up this phenomenon in far pithier or funnier terms than the ones I'm using? [more inside]

Hello, brightminded and helpful mefi's. I have an idea for (IMO) an awesome new website that I believe will be huge. Is it still feasible in this day and age for a person to buy a stack of books and learn the coding skills needed for a website with very robust features, to say the least? Or will I have to acquire the funding to hire the people to do this? Funding is non-existent at the point in time.
What was that "please invent this" website I saw a few months ago? Yeah, that's basically the premise; people would just submit ideas for software or physical products. As I recall, the postings were listed in a grid format, and the layout of the page was quite elegant (simple, clean elegant, not baroque elegant). What was that site?

Is anyone doing audiobooks for magazine and web articles? If not, why not? I wouldn't mind being able to hear a Malcolm Gladwell article read to me while I am on my commute or on a run. Are there any services that offer this? I haven't been able to find any, and I am wondering why. Copyright? No market? If I wanted to start a audiobook company what are my obstacles?

I've been living in the south for about 20 years but I am originally from New England and have lots of friends who live in Portland. I'm ready to move and start something new. I am a massage therapist, but find I can't practice at the level that I used to and this makes it difficult to consider making a good living at it for the next 20 years or so. I have managed a successful massage practice but don't really want to do that all over again. I have an entrepreneurial spirit, like a challenge, and am bored by routine... and I'm trying to invent a new business or career for myself. I have a little money to invest, but not a lot. I'm willing to learn a new skill, but not anything I'd need to go to school for more than a few months to learn (I do have a BA already.) I'm hoping for practical real-world ideas, that will work in Portland.
I was reading my Kindle last night and my entrepreneurial light went on. I am looking for feedback on the idea, but also techniques that I can use to gauge the feasibility, and legality, of this and future ideas. My idea was Cliffnotes 2.0. Book and article summaries for busy people in a world of ever increasing information. [more inside]
