Christmas Present for New Grandparents

We had a baby this year (yay!); she is the first grandchild for all four of her grandparents and they are all nuts about her. For Christmas, I'd like to get my parents and in-laws something related to her. The problem is, we send photos every day so I don't want just to give them more pictures and they don't want stuff so no mugs or t-shirts with her picture. Ideas appreciated! [more inside]

If you could time travel to see a band in 1984, what band would you see?

Hey Me-fites, I'm dipping my toes into the pool of time travel novels. My main character is going back to 1984--because I want to write about 1984 Vancouver, pre Expo, pre Olympics, when it was a hick town on the far edge of the world. When my characters back in time, he's going to check out some bands, preferably pre-famous, you know, $5 cover, one of three acts, tiny clubs, etc. So, oh wise ones, what band should he find himself seeing?

Telling your friends you bought a property

Is it generally wise to tell anyone such as your friends that you have bought a house? It is specifically for an investment to rent out to tenants. Or is it generally not a good idea? Or it doesn't matter?

Best Way to Record a Voice Memo (i.e., "Thought") While Running?

I've always wanted an easy way to capture a thought while working out. I just tried Samsung's newest SmartWatch for a few days, and it actually worked pretty well for that, but falls short in terms of battery life and overall value (e.g., stopwatch app isn't really usable for running). Would appreciate suggestions for a more affordable solution. [more inside]

I want to map (or model, or some other word, not really sure what to call this) a whole lot of things that all pertain to a broad topic. Fiction help: Name something a math genius could do to improve a bar.

Writing a script, need a few believable, throwaway lines for a character. A guy running a TGI.Friday's-like bar praises his bartender, a math genius, for giving him an idea that saves money and improves the business overall. An example of outside-of-the-box thinking that enforces that our math-genius-in-disguise really is a genius. Bonus points if the idea skirts the line of legality -- something funky with accounting, maybe? [more inside]

Oh no you didn't

Recently in a social situation I was asked my thoughts on a budgeting item and I gave it along with a solution that I had given thought to and was planning on presenting to the budget chair. (We work in different departments but run things past each other on occasion). One of the people at the gathering was a woman with political ambitions for our small town. A few days later she wrote a letter to the editor that gave my exact idea. What would you do? On the plus side it was very well received, OTH it was mine. I realize I should have said nothing and it was my mistake. I figure people that were there would know it wasn't hers and hopefully someone will point that out. Can I address it or should I leave it?

Can you share examples of innovation programs in companies that you are aware of? How do they measure the outcomes of such programs? I know Google used to or still has a program where in employees work on projects of their choosing for 20% of their time. Idea for Google! That and 50 cents...

I have a serious project proposal for Google. I don't need to make money on it, but I'd like to get it looked at. I've been poking around their websites, and have found places to submit business and partnership ideas, but I'm really not sure that those are the right way to submit this concept. It's something on the order of Google Art Project, but different from that. What would you recommend or link me to? Thanks!

Can one man still create a complex website

Hello, brightminded and helpful mefi's. I have an idea for (IMO) an awesome new website that I believe will be huge. Is it still feasible in this day and age for a person to buy a stack of books and learn the coding skills needed for a website with very robust features, to say the least? Or will I have to acquire the funding to hire the people to do this? Funding is non-existent at the point in time.

What was that "please invent this" website I saw a few months ago? Yeah, that's basically the premise; people would just submit ideas for software or physical products. As I recall, the postings were listed in a grid format, and the layout of the page was quite elegant (simple, clean elegant, not baroque elegant). What was that site?

Brainstorming for a business to start in Portland, Maine.

I've been living in the south for about 20 years but I am originally from New England and have lots of friends who live in Portland. I'm ready to move and start something new. I am a massage therapist, but find I can't practice at the level that I used to and this makes it difficult to consider making a good living at it for the next 20 years or so. I have managed a successful massage practice but don't really want to do that all over again. I have an entrepreneurial spirit, like a challenge, and am bored by routine... and I'm trying to invent a new business or career for myself. I have a little money to invest, but not a lot. I'm willing to learn a new skill, but not anything I'd need to go to school for more than a few months to learn (I do have a BA already.) I'm hoping for practical real-world ideas, that will work in Portland.
