Reykjavik Marathon and the slower runner - food stations

I'm running the Reykjavik Marathon next month. I'm a proper runner, but slow and steady. I'm looking to do the mara in under 6 hours. Have you experienced the Reykjavik Marathon (recently) as a spectator or runner and do you have specific knowledge as to whether they pack up the food stations early or run out of the powerade and bananas they say they supply. Runners can provide a pack for themselves to be available at 20k and 30k but will this just get thrown away before I get to it? [more inside]

Strolling in Iceland: looking for short, flat, remote, and scenic trails

We are a small group of photographers spending 2 weeks in Iceland. For us, somewhere that feels remote is way more appealing than checking off the can’t-miss attractions alongside everybody else. However, this is in conflict with our hiking ability: the group can handle moderately rough trails (no scrambling, but some loose rocks are fine), we are probably OK with up to 2km round-trip per hike, but hills are a problem (please, no more than 30m elevation change.) Just like everybody else, we’re driving all around the island, including the westfjords, and have a (questionable) 4x4. [more inside]

Iceland vacation plans a bit amiss - help!

When there seemed to be an endless supply of RV's/motor homes for rent my week in Iceland yesterday, I bought my air tix from the US. Today though things seem to have dried up and I'm being offered only trailers mounted on an F-150, which might work if I have to. Plan was to drive around Ring Road etc. and since we're obviously late for this summer, figured that would save the trouble of endless hotel reservations and disappointments. Any MeFites have any suggestions to save my trip?

Where to get tons of ID card with lanyards (in Reykjavik)

Fun stuff to do in Iceland on my own

So I'm on a tour in Reykjavik, Iceland right now through Tuesday. During the day, we're tromping all over the place and seeing all the sights. But at night....everyone else just wants to turn in early and rest. Tonight they went back to their rooms at 7pm! That's not an exaggeration. What are some fun things to do or cool places to go at night that are safe for me to go to alone, as a woman in my 30s? [more inside]

Iceland: specific question about transport, car hire & campers.

I know there have been lots of Iceland questions, but I am specifically trying to decide how much I'll regret not hiring a 4x4, and whether a 4x4 camper van would be worth it, given the only ones you seem to be able to get are really basic car-sleeping models, not motorhomes. [more inside]

Winter accessible natural hot spring in Iceland near Reykjavik?

Non-mountaineer, non-young folk looking for a natural hot spring suitable for bathing within an hour or so of non-offroad driving from Reykjavik. The walk in from the road might be as much as an hour if it isn't a treacherous, hard-to-follow path. Accessible in January and February with estimates of it's sensitivity to unfavorable weather conditions. An opportunity for a tranquil and wild geothermal experience (ie: a civilized uncivilized experience). [more inside]

How to spend National Day in Iceland?

We (2 adults, 2 kids) will be in Iceland over National Day (June 17th). Before we found out that we would be there for National Day, we had planned on leaving Reykjavik to drive the Ring Road on the 17th. Now that we know about National Day, should we stay in Reykjavik one more day to experience National Day there? Or is National Day better experienced in a smaller town? We are open to anything, but just want to really experience Iceland.

1 woman + 1 island + 10 days = 1 bag?

Hello, efficient international travelers! I'll be in Reykjavik for 10 days this July and am hoping to do carry-on only (from the US). Given the changeable temps and varied activities I have planned (whale watching, guided horseback riding, museum visits and shopping, light hikes in the Golden Circle and dancing as much as I can) this should be do-able, right? I don't mind washing things in the sink at night or re-wearing jackets, etc., but do you have packing tips or experience to share? Oh and if I can add an addendum in - do people still use Traveler's Checks? Last time I was abroad they were very helpful in setting a daily cash budget but that was more than a few years ago. TIA!

Can I shrink an Icelandic sweater?

I have a traditional Icelandic hand-knit wool sweater (or "jumper" in European parlance) which I purchased when I was wearing a size XL. I am now wearing a size M and I miss my beautifully warm sweater. Is it safe to attempt to shrink it, or will that totally destroy it? If it's worth trying, does anyone have any guidance on how to do it? Explain as though you were talking to a 5-year-old - I have no experience in the fiber arts.

Music from the Northern Lattitudes sought.

Every other year I throw a Nordic-themed winter solstice party to welcome the return of the sun. In addition to Nordic foods like Herring, meatballs, and Swedish fish I like to play music from the north. I want to branch out from Bjork, Sibelius and Abba. I have already downloaded the album from Árstíðir which was featured on metafilter. Can you suggest musicians/songs/bands/composers from Nordic countries (or from Arctic regions) that are sung in their native language rather than English?

Prepaid (micro-)SIM cards (with data) for Iceland

I'm going to Iceland for a few days soon, and am looking for a prepaid local SIM card to put in my iPhone 4S. It has to be a micro-SIM (though they can be cut down to that size) and to have a data allowance (I'll only be there for a few days so it doesn't need to be huge; I intend to use it for basic things like ). (It staying alive after I go back to the UK would be a nice feature, as I'll be back in Iceland again.) Is there a local mobile phone company who have a recommended prepaid SIM-only package, and if so, where in Reykjavík could I pick one up?

Heading to Iceland with an infant

My wife and I are thinking of heading to Iceland for our summer vacation. This year will be a little different as we will be traveling with our 14month old. Since are on the East Coast the flight to Iceland is reasonably quick and Iceland is quicker than some domestic locations We hope to rent a house in the south eastern part of Iceland in late May or early June. We will use the house as our base and do some small day trips from there. Our only goal for the vacation is to enjoy the scenery and see a few things. We are going to travel light and purchase most food and diapers there. Any hints, tips, and tricks traveling to Iceland with an infant. What can we expect in terms of availability of conventional baby foods and diapers? Anything else we should know?
