If I eat 8 oz. of water frozen as ice, is it the same as drinking the water as a liquid? Assume I'm not chewing ice, it's in bits I won't choke on, I'll go slow and take it easy, and I already have a high tolerance for and strong preference for cold, ice, and icy drinks/frappucinos/Slurpees.

A few years ago, my mother sent me pictures of this odd ice formation that she found in her birdbath, wondering if I had any idea how it formed. I asked around on Facebook and none of my friends could identify it, but no such luck. I just occurred to me today to ask Ask. Here are the pictures: birdbath
. Any thoughts on how that shape was created? This was winter 2010, in Connecticut.

Hello, fellow salt-deprived victims of this over-generous winter! I am fanatical about clearing my front walk, but my salt supplies are almost depleted and both salt and the usual alternatives are out of stock in my Toronto neighbourhood. In addition to dedicated shovelling and attacking residual ice with the appropriate metal tools, what can I do to fight problems like a thin slick of black ice that results from the occasional melt-friendly temperatures we get? I've got a super-pregnant buddy who has been craving ice. Specifically, the "Sonic-style" crunchy ice that's nice to chew. Any leads on where to find such a thing in New York City? She lives in Queens, so it'd be nice to be able to grab a big old bag of it somewhere (so it could survive the subway journey) and surprise her with it.

But we have screenings scheduled weekly through the end of August. Are there any good ways to keep a large space cool without a working AC system? I read a method for making iced coffee that set off my bullshit detector. The gist of it was "if you put ice in a bunch of hot coffee it will melt and you will have warm liquid", but! "if you brew drip coffee over a pot of ice, since there is only a small amount of hot coffee hitting the ice at each moment, you will have lots of cold coffee!". That's bunk, right? [more inside]

We were given far more lemons than we can reasonably use before they spoil. We'd like to freeze the juice from some of them to use in our later lemon-less life. However, the last time we tried freezing lemon juice, the juice never quite froze; the outside of the cube was slightly slimy and the cubes slowly oozed over a period of a few weeks into gelatinous lemon-flavored messes of glop. Since the other items in our freezer are so solid as to cause injury if dropped on one's bare foot (NOT THAT I'VE DONE THIS), it would seem to me that the temperature of our freezer is cold enough. But maybe I'm wrong! Any tips, O Hivemind?

I just ordered a new fridge and was told by Best Buy that they won't hook up the ice maker if I don't have an outlet box
(a water shut off valve that is right behind the fridge). Right now, I just have a plastic tube coming up out of the floor that goes straight into the fridge.
Is it necessary to have an outlet box for my fridge? I have never lived anywhere with one, everyone seems to use the ol' tube straight into the fridge method.
If needed--is it easy to DIY (I'm confident with basic tools) it or should I call a plumber? Otherwise, I was just going to connect the hose after the Best Buy guys have left.

My favorite drink is a Tanqueray and tonic and has been since I was young. In the US, especially as a teenager, people told me that it was a cranky old man drink while marveling at how it glowed under blacklight. I traveled to London once, and a guy there told me that it was a "chick drink".
I, of course, don't let what people think of it affect what tasty, tasty alcohol delivery vehicle I choose, but where you are, what's the "reputation" of gin-based drinks? Are they "manly" or "girly"? And how did it gain that reputation?
I'm holding a gimlet right now because I've run out of tonic water.
