I saw the Carpe Diem cone in the Minnesota State Fair post. They caught my eye and seem like fun. [more inside]
[iPhone filter] I have designated a few contacts in my iPhone as ICE. The problem is, any text message or phone call from any of these numbers shows up as "ICE," not their primary name. [more inside]
Hi Mefi! I've just moved to Boston. This is my first winter with snow so it's still kind of novel to me. I have some questions on whether I really need to pull out the snowblower. [more inside]
My soon-to-be-9 year old stepson has requested that I make him a birthday "pizza" of sorts for his big day. His vision involves a brownie base, ice cream as the "pizza sauce" and cookies as the "toppings." I'm a decent baker and this seems like a thing I could accomplish in a straightforward way but I'm wondering if any MeFites can point me to proven recipe winners for this sort of thing. No food allergies or restrictions. He is a chocoholic. Thanks in advance!
We've got a low-pitched copper roof. We had a big problem with ice dams last year and want to try the "ice-melt in pantyhose" thing. But what kind of ice melt? [more inside]
I have an ice maker that presumably works, but no water is even coming to it to start producing ice. What things can I try to get it to start making ice?photo1 photo2 [more inside]
I sometimes make iced coffee by placing a glass mason jar filled with ice into my single serve coffee maker and letting it brew / fill with hot coffee. I include a metal spoon inside the jar to act as a kind of heat sink and prevent the glass from breaking due to thermal stress. But should I bother? Does that spoon actually do anything?
I can't find any good ice packs anymore and this seems to be a problem for a lot of other gimpy people. Gels--freeze too cold and don't last long. Clay--not cold and don't last. Is there anything else that works? [more inside]

What's the best ice pack to use in a cooler when car camping? Has anyone done scientific reviews of the various kinds? Is there any difference between the various brands of refreezable ice packs? I'm asking about these sorts of things. [more inside]

I've been seeing ice on the tops of puddles when the low temperature for the day is forecast to be low (2 or 3 degrees) but not freezing. Why is that? [more inside]
I am currently in the Boston area experiencing snow mania 2015 where we have received an obscene amount of snow lately. I am a new homeowner and this is our first winter in the house so thank you in advance for your advice! There are a number of ice damns on my roof (likely because we have a cape-style house with poor ventilation). We're planning to have someone look into what we can do to improve ventilation/etc after the winter, but in the meantime do you have any advice on what to do about the ice damns? [more inside]
I have an ice dam on my roof, on a high dormer I can't reach (or really rake very well, but I'm going to give it another go!). The thing is, though, everyone on my block has ice dams, many that are proud and terrible cataracts of frozen majesty that put my small ice dam to shame. But no one seems to be doing anything about it. What gives? [more inside]
The passenger side doors on my Honda Odyssey keep freezing shut in cold weather, and last night the windshield iced over on the inside. Do I need to have it checked out, or is that normal? [more inside]
The blizzard has come and gone, and we were hit pretty hard. I have never seen this much snow, or lived in a house before, or lived in a town before. How do we move forward with our property, and what can we expect from the days and weeks that follow? [more inside]
I have a 2011 GTI with stock 18" Detroit wheels. I'm tired of the pothole slalom. Should I just get all-season tires on 17" wheels? Or should I get winter tires on 16" wheels and the in the spring get summer tires on 17" wheels? [more inside]
Does this kind of ice formation have a name? All the rocks along the sides of a fast moving stream we visited were ringed by these small ice droplets.
I want -- nay, NEED an icy sidewalk to be clean and bone-dry. What are your best, most hardcore ice melting and sidewalk clearing solutions, particularly those requiring less specialized equipment and/or money? [more inside]
I spent $60 on a pair of these Bare Traps boots, which I loved for exactly five days until the heel completely fell off of the shoe. I am off to get my money back as we speak. What retailer makes boots like these that won't fall apart this winter? [more inside]
I have roof cables installed on my roof to help with our awful ice dams. Problem is, it is very expensive just to leave them running all the time when I am at work. But if I turn them off and a snowstorm starts while I am at work, then the ice dams form before I get home. Can anyone suggest some kind of a remote activation device. Ideally something that would let me turn on the cables from my phone or from the web. The system is already installed on the roof, so all I need is some kind of system to turn it on and off. Please do not suggest modifications to the roof - we have been through every type of soffit, sheathing, roofing solution over a period of 20 years - these ice dams are just an insoluble problem and the only way to control them is with the cables. So I am only looking for replies that can suggest ways to turn the cables on and off remotely. Thanks!
Where was the Magnum Ice Cream commercial with Rachel Bilson filmed? While some of the cars shown are American, I spy a Toyota Yaris with taillights that look very different from the US-market version, a Jeep with export taillights, and some other SUV that was certainly never sold here.
My ice maker makes ice (yeah) and the auger will turn when depressing the plate on the front of the refrig door. But the little trap door will not open to let the ice drop down. Do I have to replace the whole ice maker or is there any trick to fixing this myself? [more inside]
I got one of these for my birthday: KitchenAid Ice Cream Maker Attachment and would like to actually use it. This is on it's way: Sweet Cream and Sugar Cones: 90 Recipes for Making Your Own Ice Cream and Frozen Treats from Bi-Rite Creamery But I would like to make something in it this weekend, so hit me with your favorite ice-cream recipe. Obviously, needs to work in the above.
If I eat 8 oz. of water frozen as ice, is it the same as drinking the water as a liquid? Assume I'm not chewing ice, it's in bits I won't choke on, I'll go slow and take it easy, and I already have a high tolerance for and strong preference for cold, ice, and icy drinks/frappucinos/Slurpees.
I have one of those insane ideas for a birthday present for my other half, but it involves making an 'ice crystal' out of acrylic or glass or something and I have no idea where to start, or where to start looking for help... [more inside]

A few years ago, my mother sent me pictures of this odd ice formation that she found in her birdbath, wondering if I had any idea how it formed. I asked around on Facebook and none of my friends could identify it, but no such luck. I just occurred to me today to ask Ask. Here are the pictures: birdbath and close-up. Any thoughts on how that shape was created? This was winter 2010, in Connecticut.

Hello, fellow salt-deprived victims of this over-generous winter! I am fanatical about clearing my front walk, but my salt supplies are almost depleted and both salt and the usual alternatives are out of stock in my Toronto neighbourhood. In addition to dedicated shovelling and attacking residual ice with the appropriate metal tools, what can I do to fight problems like a thin slick of black ice that results from the occasional melt-friendly temperatures we get? [more inside]
I've got a super-pregnant buddy who has been craving ice. Specifically, the "Sonic-style" crunchy ice that's nice to chew. Any leads on where to find such a thing in New York City? She lives in Queens, so it'd be nice to be able to grab a big old bag of it somewhere (so it could survive the subway journey) and surprise her with it.
My house is becoming an ice fort complete with ice moat. I would like to at least get out the front door without killing myself. Please help! [more inside]

My friend does a ramen night every so often, where he makes ramen completely from scratch. I'm often tasked with dessert because I'm a blogger and baker... I've already made plenty of desserts with black sesame and green tea so I want to try something new. I have taro powder and was originally going to do something with taro and coconut. I already even made taro marshmallows. But then I remembered that I had bought a bag of kinako/soybean flour some time ago and I should use it... I found a recipe for a kinako chiffon cake but would an ice cream be better? [more inside]
This has been the Year Of Learning How To Make Ice Cream And Ice Pops. With certain holidays looming on the horizon, I have been searching to no avail, for a recipe for peppermint ice cream pops. I made a successful peppermint ice cream with crushed candy canes...but not sure if shoehorning the product of an ice cream maker into pop molds would really work properly. Do any MeFi Ice Cream Mavens have tips for me?
I had an incredible milkshake once when I was a kid in the early aughts in southern New Jersey. The ice cream place served enormous milkshakes and had distinctive cow placemats. It was not near the shore; it was probably in a rural or somewhat rural area. What ice cream place was it? [more inside]

The organization I run rents a large, old theater for once-a-week film screenings. Problem: the air conditioning is broken, and the theater doesn't have the capital to fix it before the summer ends. But we have screenings scheduled weekly through the end of August. Are there any good ways to keep a large space cool without a working AC system? (How did people keep cool in indoor spaces historically, pre-AC?) [more inside]
I read a method for making iced coffee that set off my bullshit detector. The gist of it was "if you put ice in a bunch of hot coffee it will melt and you will have warm liquid", but! "if you brew drip coffee over a pot of ice, since there is only a small amount of hot coffee hitting the ice at each moment, you will have lots of cold coffee!". That's bunk, right? [more inside]
I have read that a low refrigerant charge in a refrigeration system can cause the system's evaporator to ice up. I happen to have a dehumidifier which is exhibiting this symptom. I do not expect to be able to repair the dehumidifier but, as something of an HVAC enthusiast, I am curious as to why and how this happens. [more inside]
Found this silicone mold at the thrift store today. My guess is it's for making some sort of fruit-filled baked dessert. I'm imagining something similar to a strawberry shortcake. What is it for? [more inside]
We were given far more lemons than we can reasonably use before they spoil. We'd like to freeze the juice from some of them to use in our later lemon-less life. However, the last time we tried freezing lemon juice, the juice never quite froze; the outside of the cube was slightly slimy and the cubes slowly oozed over a period of a few weeks into gelatinous lemon-flavored messes of glop. Since the other items in our freezer are so solid as to cause injury if dropped on one's bare foot (NOT THAT I'VE DONE THIS), it would seem to me that the temperature of our freezer is cold enough. But maybe I'm wrong! Any tips, O Hivemind?
I just ordered a new fridge and was told by Best Buy that they won't hook up the ice maker if I don't have an outlet box (a water shut off valve that is right behind the fridge). Right now, I just have a plastic tube coming up out of the floor that goes straight into the fridge. Is it necessary to have an outlet box for my fridge? I have never lived anywhere with one, everyone seems to use the ol' tube straight into the fridge method. If needed--is it easy to DIY (I'm confident with basic tools) it or should I call a plumber? Otherwise, I was just going to connect the hose after the Best Buy guys have left.
My favorite drink is a Tanqueray and tonic and has been since I was young. In the US, especially as a teenager, people told me that it was a cranky old man drink while marveling at how it glowed under blacklight. I traveled to London once, and a guy there told me that it was a "chick drink". I, of course, don't let what people think of it affect what tasty, tasty alcohol delivery vehicle I choose, but where you are, what's the "reputation" of gin-based drinks? Are they "manly" or "girly"? And how did it gain that reputation? I'm holding a gimlet right now because I've run out of tonic water.
