I’m looking for a money management app for Mac that also syncs with iPhone. What do you use and why? (I’ve looked here on Metafilter and found little to nothing that’s recent). [more inside]
I'm looking for a free calendar app that will work without being synced to either my iPhone calendar or my google calendar. [more inside]
Does iOS 7 (beta) sync to iTunes 10.7 or will iTunes 11.0.x be required? I have held back on upgrading iTunes past 10.7, but I am wondering if I'll be forced to upgrade to 11.0.x once iOS 7 is released. I sync via USB on a Mac with 10.6.8. I'm not inserted in WiFi sync and don't use iCloud.
I sold someone an iPhone 3G after I dropped it two stories, fully disclosing the damage as far as I could tell; destroyed glass, a big chunk missing out of the back, non functioning power button, and that the antenna was likely broken since it would not connect to a carrier/network. It was also clear from the description that this was being sold as "for parts, not working." Buyer is claiming they are unable to activate the phone in iTunes, which says "there is a problem with your iPhone." Is this to be expected, given the description above? Can you help me say how, specifically this is to be expected given the condition described?
I want something for iPhone that's basically similar to android's My Tracks. Does such a thing exist? Everything I've seen is horribly written/crashy/has terrible, terrible UI. [more inside]
Advice please: (1) are there SIM only, pay-as-you-go cell options available in Canada (2) any recommendations for a solid, inexpensive, quad-band phone for a pensioner that probably won't use apps [more inside]
I'm taking Calc I this fall. I can borrow a graphing calculator for actual exams, but don't want to actually purchase one for day-to-day--or haul it around with me. I have an iPhone and a Nexus 7. Is there a graphing calculator app in one or the other app store that is clearly superior? I'm willing to pay, but under $10, ideally.
My contract for my dumbphone is up and I think it is finally time for me to upgrade to a smartphone. However, I have a few questions about the type of phone and the service provider. [more inside]
I live in a major city with a ton of interesting gallery and museum exhibitions. I've too often found that I missed a show. Is there an iphone app that will easily keep track only of shows I'm interested in seeing, listing their opening and closing dates? Or has anyone found a successful way to keep track? Bonus: a reminder letting me know when they're closing soon. Also interested in evernote and google calendar solutions.
Up until this morning, I have always been able to use my 3g network, make a call and browse the internet at the sametime on my iPhone 4s. This morning when I went to use my phone a message appeared (while connected to 3g) that stated, Cannot Verify Server Identity. Once I got that all figured out, the capability to use the internet while on 3g and talking on the phone was gone. I called Verizon and they claim this was never a feature on their iPhones and told me I must have a special phone. After some investigating, what they are telling me seems to be true, but I know that I have been able to do this the last year or two that I've had this phone. I did it last night while talking to my brother and relaying information that I had looked up for him. But! 8 hours later this feature is now gone and only works when I'm hooked up to my wireless. I'm just severely bugged that this is all of a sudden gone, when I can recall being in my car doing all this (safely parked) and talking to my husband while hes at work. What could have happened? Was I just imagining this for the last couple years or did they somehow take this capability away from me this morning?
My SO just got an iPhone 5! We are possibly the last people in the world to get smartphones (maybe second last) and have no idea what it can do. Also, his birthday is coming up. Can you suggest great apps or hardware that I might be able to get for him? He already has a case and headphones, and I don't think I want a docking station, though am ready to be convinced otherwise. His interests are hiking, climbing, gardening, cooking and photography. Thanks all!
I want to stream my iTunes music from my DropBox via an iOs app called Tunebox. But my music's Apple Lossless, and Tunebox only handles AAC/MP3. So I need to efficiently recreate/duplicate all playlists with lossy versions and figure out where to store the darned music library. [more inside]
If you could start from scratch, no contract holding you back...I'm confused by the comparison websites so Mefites, it needs to be with a new iPhone (to sync with the family's iCloud), I need to be able to tether it to my iPad while travelling but not for massive graphics or anything, just e-mails, websites, downloads from Amazon Kindle etc., [more inside]
I have a silly personal email that I've used over the years, but I'm wondering if it makes sense to switch from Gmail to another email provider or possibly Google Apps under my own domain. [more inside]

Hi there, I'm teaching my Dad in China to use his Chinese App Store account - His iPhone and iPad Mini are his MAIN cameras these days, and he loves taking photos. I'm a bit rushed as I have to leave China soon, and don't have to time to search through Chinese app reviews (I don't know Chinese well anyway). So, please can you recommend any iPhone and iPad camera and photo apps (paid or free) available on the Chinese App Store that you love. Impressive apps are good; Impressive AND easy to learn and use apps (my Dad is not very tech-skilled and doesn't like complicated instructions) are the greatest. Thanks very much for your tips!!!
I'm going to be traveling with both and a data-only SIM. I can't switch the SIMs back and forth (nano vs micro), and would rather not pay for two SIM cards, so should I put the SIM in the IPad mini (longer battery, larger to carry) and tether the phone to it, or vice versa? Are there any considerations other than battery life and cumbersome-ness?
I need to add up prices as quickly as possible at work. There is no cash register, and using a normal calculator is too slow. [more inside]
Help me organize my family life. I've seen previous questions and don't think that Cozi is the solution. Maybe it's not an App but Apps I'm looking for, or are we simply not making the most of the tools we have available on our iPhones. How do you keep your family life organized? If you can give examples of how you use the tools vs. just the names that would be even more super-helpful. Details and specific criteria below the fold, but we need to manage and sync multiple calendars, shopping lists, to do lists, etc. Both wife and I have iPhones (me: 4s, her 3gs), she also has an iPad which she will use, also she isn't very techie so the more straightforward the better, and I need to sync an Outlook work calendar from a work PC that doesn't play nice with Outlook add-ons (other than Google calendar). I currently live in Toronto. From September to April, I'll live in Boston, with regular short trips back to Canada during that period. After that I'll come back to Canada. I am, alas, a total iPhone newb and I'm looking for advice on what someone in my position should do. [more inside]
How durable is the iPhone to different things, such as impact on surfaces, water exposure, etc.? I'm asking because I hit my iPhone 5 with an umbrella by accident and it looks fine, except for some small amount of metal finish that came off on the back of it. Can force like that affect internal components as well even if not visible?
I'm looking for specific functionality from a task reminder app. I'd like to be able to schedule regular chores and tasks at specific intervals, but have the next reminder time be automatically updated at the time I complete the task. [more inside]

I'm looking to replace my iPhone 4s. The most important factor to me is cellular data speed and reliability -- accessing the Web, syncing iCloud data, YouTube, stuff like that. I live in the San Francisco Bay Area (East Bay region), but it would be great if it worked well in New York, L.A. and other parts of the U.S. Should I go with Verizon or AT&T? Also, any pointers to websites with tools/reviews/resources to help me make the selection? [more inside]
I'm going to Iceland for a few days soon, and am looking for a prepaid local SIM card to put in my iPhone 4S. It has to be a micro-SIM (though they can be cut down to that size) and to have a data allowance (I'll only be there for a few days so it doesn't need to be huge; I intend to use it for basic things like ). (It staying alive after I go back to the UK would be a nice feature, as I'll be back in Iceland again.) Is there a local mobile phone company who have a recommended prepaid SIM-only package, and if so, where in Reykjavík could I pick one up?
My son has an iPod touch and pretty much everyone in our family has iPhones and iPads. I would like to find a way that my son can text chat with only a small approved list of people. [more inside]
My phone contract is coming to an end, and I've decided I'd rather purchase an unlocked phone and move to a prepaid plan than continue in my current cell phone contract. I have an iPhone 4 but want to upgrade to a 4s or 5. It looks like I can get one on eBay for a solid $100-$150 cheaper than I can get one from the Apple store. Having a new vs. used phone is of zero consequence to me as long as it works fine and isn't stolen. Is it a terrible idea to buy a phone off eBay? What pitfalls should I watch out for?

My husband and I are traveling to London later this week for a 10-day trip (yay!). For part of the trip I'm going to be at a conference, and he will be doing some work things, so we need to be able to get in touch with each other, either via voice calls or text. I'm trying to figure out the cheapest way to accomplish this. [more inside]
I'm interested in asserting a lot more control of my personal information and communications to prevent prying eyes of both governmental and criminal types. I'm interested in general best practices to secure my personal information, passwords, data and communication (including phones, texting and email). I am not an expert in software or anything of the kind. I use an iPhone and Apple computers. There's a few more specific requests inside. [more inside]

First things first: I'm not a stalker and I won't do anything illegal. I've found the person who is almost certainly my birthmother. I need her cell phone number. I believe it's an iPhone. I also have an iPhone, for what it's worth. Please note: this question is not about whether it's a good idea to contact this person. Nor is it about whether I should contact her via an alternate method. [more inside]
Just poking around the forecast.io web app on my iPhone, and I noticed that it gets its own icon in the app tray that shows recent apps. As far as I can tell, normally sites installed as apps just point to Safari down there. How does forecast.io finagle its own icon?

I've been using this case for my iPhone 4 for about a year now. Here's what I like about it: it doesn't cover the screen; it doesn't compromise the camera lens or flash; it is a smooth material that doesn't snag on my pocket (unlike, say, rubber); and most importantly, it has slots for credit cards that are very easily accessible. Here's what I don't like about it: all of the available colors are boring or ugly. Is there an iPhone 4 case out there that satisfies everything I love about this one but is more aesthetically interesting? At this point I would even consider different solid colors more interesting. (The one thing I am not willing to compromise on is card slots, so please don't recommend that. I know I'm being a brat.)
Can you point me towards a site with different "scratching" noises suitable for ringtones (length and formatwise). Would also appreciate a step by step tutorial of how to convert said mp3/mp4 to an iPhone 4S ringtone. Cheers
I am in the UK. I live in Plymouth. My one year Vodafone contract is finally up and I hate them with a passion. I'd like to switch, but as a still relatively new ex-pat I don't know who to switch to. Can you recommend a provider to me based on my requirements inside? [more inside]

I think we've had a couple of questions specific to language apps in the past. But I got to wondering what particularly good learning apps for grown-up users are out there, regardless of subject. Specifically, apps that are well designed, easy to use but challenging to the appropriate degree, and fun. Pretty graphics are nice too.

I think the time has come for me to jump the iPhone ship. The announcement of the Google version of the Galaxy S4 at I/O was the clincher. But I am not 100% sold on the idea, mainly because the S4 is an ugly brute, but also because I fear for the apps and innovation I will miss. Help me out, specifically in finding a worthy replacement for my beloved Mailbox app. [more inside]
I listen to a lot of audio books on my iphone while driving and working. I also like listening to music in between for short periods, but still need to keep my place in the book. Right now I am using the bookmark app to keep track of the audio book, which seems to be the best app that I have tried so far. But the problem is that whenever I want to switch back to my playlist of music, the iphone music app defaults to the audio book that was last played. Is there any better way of switching back and forth so that the music app can remember that it is supposed to play a playlist and the audio book app remembers to start where I left off in the book? Is there any way to block the incessant iMessages and Facetime requests from a particular person? For the past few months, I've been getting near-daily iMessages and Facetime requests from someone I don't know. It's pretty clearly a kid, and I can't get them to believe that they are sending the messages to the wrong person -- if I reply and tell them that, they either won't believe me, or they respond by asking me over and over what my name is and what school I go to, and do I know so-and-so's cousin, etc., etc.. It's maddening. [more inside]
