Finally, after a number of years of lugging around books, cameras, dumb phones, an iPod and an iPad, I'm thinking it might be time to streamline my daily life a little and cross over to the smartphone side. Because I use the iPod and iPad heavily already, I'm not really considering anything other than an iPhone, but I have questions, mostly about what it will do to my iTunes library. [more inside]
I would like to get only events with certain key words in the description to sync with another calendar-- the calendar on my iPhone would be ideal, but another google calendar is fine. [more inside]
I'm finally caving and buying a smartphone. Size is a major factor, but I'm also not sure how concerned I should be about the security of phones that are stuck with older versions of their OS. [more inside]
I am looking for an iPhone app that will take me on a nice run in a town I am unfamiliar with. [more inside]
I need to use my iPhone to find out where I drank last weekend. Lost some things I must have set down at a bar. [more inside]
Should I upgrade my iPhone 5 to the new 6S, or an as-yet-unidentified Android phone? Biggest priority: SMALL size with best specs possible. [more inside]
I've been offered a spare iPhone 6 by a relative (my current US iPhone 4S on a AT&T phone is aging and not always working well) but this iPhone 6 was bought in Hong Kong and was used in China. Is it possible for me to use it on a US carrier plan without too much extra trouble/expense? What about in the UK and elsewhere in Europe ? Will I be able to transfer the iPhone 6 to my US Apple account (with all my iTunes/App Store content) OK? Thanks for your tips, MeFites!
I'm getting assigned to work at the parent company near Tokyo for a year. Yay!!! They won't be providing a mobile phone. Boo!! What's the best way to have a smartphone in Japan for the year? [more inside]
Suggest a microphone to plug into my iPhone 5S to improve the audio of my iPhone videos? Lavalier preferred, but a little shotgun thingie would be ok too. Hoping to achieve improved voice quality with less roomtone, and I need the audio file to record right onto the video file- I don't want to sync it in post. Thanks!
I recently installed Ingress, a massively multiplayer augmented reality game for smartphones, which involves walking around in the real world to find and capture virtual "portals". I thought it was a neat idea, until I realized that it's a thinly disguised Google data mining project. Boo! Are there similar games which aren't (or at least don't appear to be) creepware? [more inside]
My google-fu has failed me, and I sheepishly turn to you. Need help trying to figure out if the non-Sprint US iPhone 6 will work on LTE in the UK. [more inside]
Can I jam an iphone in my tight side jeans pocket, with a bunch of other crap, sit down, etc., and not have it be destroyed? [more inside]
I typically carry my iPhone in my pants pocket and not infrequently take it out to find that it has successfully bypassed the four digit lock code needed to wake it up, activated an app, and successfully given itself several meaningless - but potentially consequential - commands. I can think of at least two reasons why this should not be possible, but it happens on average a couple times a week. What the hell is going on? [more inside]
I am confused about my options for using voice/data/texting on my Verizon iPhone 5 while on a trip to Canada. [more inside]
I've got an old Verizon iPhone I would dearly love to keep as long as possible, because once I give it up for a newer one I lose my unlimited data plan. (Grumble! Rant!). [more inside]
The ghost of Steve Jobs and I disagree on smart phone design. Can I make an Android phone work with all my existing Apple stuff? And if so, which Android phone should I get? [more inside]
I have an original Droid with a slide-out keyboard with Verizon, and I'm looking to upgrade. I also have a Sony Smartwatch, first edition. I've been looking at iPhones longingly for a while, and Verizon had a deal on the iPhone 5c that expired yesterday, so without much thought, I ordered one. It's on backorder, and I have 14 days to try it and return it without penalty, and I'm only now doing proper research on my options. So here I am, looking for insight and input. [more inside]

I'm traveling to Japan for a week for InterBee - which also include two days on my own. I land at the airport...and then have to get to my hotel (different ones during the trip). My guess is that I will be doing loads of train travel. Loads of questions [more inside]
I was given a iphone 4s from a relative as a gift. I already have a nice android and thought it would be cool to just use the iphone as a ipod instead of just selling the gift and risk offending them. It came factory reset and stays on a activation screen awaiting a sim card. I can not figure out how to get past this screen and just use it as a device which is fairly easy to do with any android phone. Do I need to "unlock" or "jailbreak" the phone to bypass the sim card need or do I need to buy a sim card just to use it as a ipod with no carrier or phone functionality? Please help and recommend any useful software.
I'm planning on getting my very first smartphone pretty soon. One of the ways that people seem to use phones (a lot? sometimes?) involves syncing info between couples: schedules, grocery lists, to-do lists, tracking the other person's phone to tell that they're stuck in traffic, etc. Is this really useful? Does wanting this mean I should get an iPhone (like my husband) or can I do Android? [more inside]

I think the time has come for me to jump the iPhone ship. The announcement of the Google version of the Galaxy S4 at I/O was the clincher. But I am not 100% sold on the idea, mainly because the S4 is an ugly brute, but also because I fear for the apps and innovation I will miss. Help me out, specifically in finding a worthy replacement for my beloved Mailbox app. [more inside]

I am looking for advice on finding the best smart phone deals. I have an old clamshell phone. I need very little for myself...not even texting though want the occasional use of apps. I am currently moving to Denver and may switch from AT&T though my wireless and phones are bundled and very cheap ($90/mo for our two cheap phones and wireless for home though that would change *a lot* with upgrades?). I am really confused on what the hell is a decent deal. I don't make many calls whatsoever but my wife will be calling family or perhaps using Face Time/Messaging via an iPhone if we can afford. We don't need the newest and best phones but am not sure where to start for packaging costs, especially as we may do wireless separate once we get to Denver. Any thoughts on how you would go about this, where you would buy a phone (new or refurb), deals that have worked for you (assuming you don't use the phone for a lot but still want the options of some of the apps). iPhone? Samsung? Razr? Carriers recommendations? I want to go as low $ as possible but not make a stupid decision out of pinching the hell out of the pennies.
I'm currently using an iPhone 3GS in Ontario with Fido. With the new iPhone on the horizon, I'm considering buying the phone unlocked through Apple, and switching to a "Pay as You Go" service. I'm hoping the kind folks at Metafilter can help me choose the best plan. [more inside]

Looking to find a good reputable screen replacement vendor. Some of my end users (CEO among them) have recently broken their smart phone screens. I'd like to find a good vendor who can replace the screens and they've got to work on more than just iPhones. Thanks!
My wife and I are going to swap our elderly "regular" cell phones on Sprint for smart phones on Virgin Mobile. My wife is going to go with the Optimus Elite. My question is this: Can it possibly be worth it for me to go with the less expensive iPhone ($550) over the highest-spec Android phone (the Evo V 4G at $300)? [more inside]
