I like to listen to albums and playlists from my music collection on my iPhone. I don't need a streaming service, or radio, or recommendations, or social networks. I just want a simple user interface that lets me pick out an album (or maybe a playlist) and listen to it. Does such a thing exist for iOS? The built-in music app has gotten way too complicated, and does not work well for me or my family. [more inside]
I've been doing a lot of hands-on failure analysis and inspection for my work, and I need a good way to dictate inspection notes using my iphone. You know in TV when the coroner describes the autopsy as he's doing it? Like that. I'd really prefer it to be an iOS app, but some kind of laptop app would be vaguely acceptable. Specific Required features inside. [more inside]
I need an app to easily track various things in my life that can be captured as numbers. I'm sure the app I'm looking for exists, but I just don't know how to search for it. [more inside]
Has anyone else had trouble with an iPhone running iOS 9 that is giving the "This message has not been downloaded from the server" error on a Cox.net IMAP account, not a POP account? [more inside]
I'm about to make the move from an iPhone to a Nexus 5X running Android. If you've made the iOS to Android switch recently, what was your experience like? What surprised you? What confused you? What did you forget to think about and do that you wish you had?
I accidentally deleted an iPhone app (Voice Recorder). Associated with the app were audio files that I didn't have anywhere else, some of which I'd be pretty bummed to lose. There are no phone backups. Is it possible that these files still exist on my phone, and with the right tools, one could recover them? [more inside]
I need a grocery app that my husband and I can both add to/sync lists for iOS (web interface nice but not mandatory). We've been using Buy Me a Pie, but it's gotten glitchy for us and won't let me add him to lists. I've seen this post, and will check out the other recs, but it's a year old, which is forever in app development time. Possible complication: spouse beta tests new iOS versions on his phone for work reasons.
A friend's child passed away this week. They left behind an iPhone, iPad and MacBook, but no passwords. Looking for recommendations on best course of action to access the devices. [more inside]
I'm looking for an iPhone app that lets one keep time records (simple in-out-lunch's fine, don't need task/client tracking), but most importantly has a presence on the lock screen. In a perfect world I could get a lunch hour countdown clock too, but I'm not greedy. Any suggestions?
When I look at Android apps in Google Play, it's easy to click a button and see what permissions it needs. Is there any way in the iOS App Store to find out what permissions an app needs without buying it? [more inside]
I’m mostly only interested in tweets with links. I’m looking for both an iPhone app and a web interface (or, as a fallback, a Windows app) that will just show me that. [more inside]
I'd like to be able to send/receive text messages on my computer. I have an iPhone and a MacBook Pro, but I DON'T want to update to Yosemite. Is this possible? [more inside]
I have a gmail account, which I love, but on my iPhone it's seriously misbehaving. read emails are getting marked as unread again, unrelated emails are grouped... hjalp? [more inside]
I'm hoping to create an iPhone app that's a travel guide whose text pages will include some foreign terms. Users should be able to touch a foreign term to see a pop-up phonetic pronunciation. But the programmers I'm considering hiring say they're not sure how to do this, and suspect it might be expensive. Can anyone smart save the day and come up with a solution? [more inside]
I need to give a demonstration on an iPhone 6+, and need to have full control of the device. Difficulty level: I will not be holding the phone, and will not have a desk surface for a traditional mouse. In a perfect and just world, I would simply be able to connect a bluetooth mouse and use it like any other input device, but I understand that iOS does not support mice. Assume I do not need any multi touch gestures, just taps and swipes. [more inside]
I thought I'd be okay if I waiting until iOS 8.2 to upgrade my iPhone 5 but I feel like I've made a terrible mistake. I would like to go back to 7.1.2 but that appears to be impossible. Is it? Or am I stuck with a phone I'm no longer happy with?
Is there a way to prevent an iPhone running iOS 8.1.2 from automatically pairing with known bluetooth devices? The phone is jailbroken if that helps. [more inside]
What's the best way to keep podcast subscriptions and listens on two Macs and an iPhone synced that supports downloading episodes (i.e., not web-only)? If the answer involves iTunes, I might need an explanation of how to fix it since each copy of iTunes seems to be doing its own thing. I'm not looking for live slinging/transfer of audio to another device since the Macs are in completely different locations and the phone isn't always around.
When syncing my iPhone 5 to my Macbook Pro, every time I connect it it tries to load about 5 games from my apps collection from the Macbook to the phone. It's always the same games, and this is a new problem within the past month or so. I haven't updated the OS or anything else -- is there some "autosync" option with certain games that I need to turn off? It's a pain to have to delete them every other day.
I'm doing a miserable job of logging what I eat, so I am trying to think of how to set the bar as low as possible and make it super easy to have a record of what I've eaten. The easiest thing I've thought of so far is just taking photos of what I eat with my smartphone (iPhone). Should I use a particular platform that integrates well with iOS8? [more inside]
I recently installed Ingress, a massively multiplayer augmented reality game for smartphones, which involves walking around in the real world to find and capture virtual "portals". I thought it was a neat idea, until I realized that it's a thinly disguised Google data mining project. Boo! Are there similar games which aren't (or at least don't appear to be) creepware? [more inside]
My IP address on my iDevice (iPhone & iPad) shows one thing when I go to "whatismyip.com", but my email server shows something different. What is going on? [more inside]
I plugged my iPhone in to my computer and it says you need to upgrade your software. So the phone was updating to iOS 8.1.1 and it errored out. It says upgrading failed, you need to restore to factory setting and you will lose all the data. So I tried to upgrade again and it failed again. I took it to the geniuses at the apple store and they said there is no hope of recovering my data. Does the hive mind know of a way??
I'm interested in making perfectly-looping Vine videos of me playing guitar riffs. I'd like to shoot and edit these videos on my phone (iPhone 5, iOS 8.1), without using a desktop editor. Is there an app that allows you to hear audio while editing?.... [more inside]
My iPhone 5S has a ton of stuff in "Other" storage (iTunes screenshot); I don't even have disk space to do the latest iOS update. I see this is a common problem, surely some of you have a solution? [more inside]
I typically carry my iPhone in my pants pocket and not infrequently take it out to find that it has successfully bypassed the four digit lock code needed to wake it up, activated an app, and successfully given itself several meaningless - but potentially consequential - commands. I can think of at least two reasons why this should not be possible, but it happens on average a couple times a week. What the hell is going on? [more inside]
I am looking for games for iOS that are played 2-player at the same time, with the phone flat on a table, one person on each side playing against each other. I don't know what to call this so it's hard to search for more (I think of them like 80's arcade cocktail machines). So far the only ones I've found are OLO (a hybrid of shuffleboard and air hockey), TEN (same company, it's like mega tic-tac-toe) and some checkers/chess games. Are there others? What is this style of game design called?
Why won't my music sync and play properly?! I have been struggling with this since iOS 5? 6? Feels like forever - I am so beyond frustrated. So much so that I am ready to just stop using music on my iPhone and iPad completely. Which was the reason I got an iPhone in the first place. [more inside]
I somehow lost an app from my iPhone - it's still on my iPad - how can I recover it from the iPad? [more inside]
As long as I've had an iPhone I've used the default email app, Mail, linked to my primary gmail address, along with my secondary gmail address that forwards to my primary mailbox. After upgrading my iPhone 5 to the 6, I've lost the ability to use an Exchange account for gmail so that new mail pushes to the Mail app. See here. [more inside]
My current Android phone is dying, and I've had bad luck with other Android phones. Money is real tight right now, but I'm thinking about buying this used Apple iPhone 4 for $95. Will I regret the purchase? [more inside]
I have a large email account and would like to sync email to my iPhone - but only the emails going back one year. IOS 7.1.2 will allow one month and then "no limit". Nothing in between. I have even tried the Outlook app on the iPhone - kind of works, but search only goes back 6 months. Any ideas anyone?
Someone has requested my assistance in finding the best Bible app for iOS. [more inside]
I've been trying to Google this but coming up short - what's the best to-do list for iOS with offline access? [more inside]
I'm looking for a counter/tallying app (akin to mdevore's Flexible Counter) which allows for realtime syncing between users. That is, I'd like to be able to increment a counter and have the new value quickly show up for another device. Does such a thing exist? [more inside]
Is there hope in restoring photos that have not been backed up or synced onto iCloud? [more inside]
I've recently created an iPhone app that's not a game, but falls more in the "Entertainment" category (it uses Twitter to predict the future). And I'm not sure where I should try to send it for review/exposure, as most review sites are game-oriented. I've tried the usual suspects (MeFi Projects, submitted to BoingBoing, shared on FB and Twitter), but am surprised at how quickly I'm running out of ideas for places to send this guy to. [more inside]
Lately I've found it difficult to find anything new to play on my iPhone (have an iPhone 5 and an iPad, but typically use my iPhone for this sort of thing). I've been playing the same old games for a while now and need some new ones. [more inside]
A strange mismatch is going on between my Mac Contacts and my iPhone contacts. Even though I'm using a single Apple ID on both machines, certain contacts exist on the iPhone but not the Mac and vice-versa. I haven't been able to find the explanation for this. [more inside]
I'm looking for well-designed puzzle and strategy games for my iPhone 5S. [more inside]
Mrs. Alms and I like to maintain a single contact list for both of us across our iPhones and Macintoshes. How can we do this without abusing my Apple ID and iCloud? [more inside]
I'm looking for an app with the following: -tracks sets -tracks reps -nice visualizations over time - charts etc. -ad free So far I've found decent trackers for individual activities, and crap trackers (eg FitList) for multiple activities.
I'm currently coding an iPhone messaging client app which could use a designer for the screens and the app icon. I've tried oDesk.com and I'm having doubts about the quality of some of the applicants. Are there any good suggestions for websites that can provide a good designer? I'm looking for high quality work and I'm willing to pay a reasonable rate for it (though I would rather pay per project - currently I set $1000 for the project).
We're going to have some folks filling out the same simple form on a regular basis. Is there an app-based solution where they can enter the data and upload it securely to a central repository at the end of the day? A web solution may have been easier, but we're worried connectivity might be an issue during parts of the day. We want users to tap an app and be able to fill out a bunch of forms, then upload them all (securely) at the end of the day. A simple, elegant, fast interface would be a real plus. [more inside]
Looking for an iOS app that will let me set up a table (of dice scores and results), then roll on that table by pushing a button. For example, I might set up a table 'FOO': 1-2 = A, 3-4 = B, 5-6 = C. I could then push the FOO button, and it'd roll a d6 and give me A, B or C. Does this sort of thing exist?
Is there a good app that lets one play Sudoku against friends? I'm looking for something that is non-crappy and has both IOS and Android versions.
After a complicated chain of circumstances involving a SIM migration, a grandfathered prepaid data plan that transferred from an iPhone 3G to a 4 to the current 5S, and many hours (no exaggeration) at the AT&T store while their employees talked to level 2 tech support, I was left with:
- A working iPhone 5S on AT&T, now getting LTE data but restored to factory settings.
- A recent encrypted backup from the phone, just before the wipe.
Is it possible to transfer apps between iOS devices without jailbreaking? [more inside]
I’m interested in the DURR, a simple display-less “watch” that vibrates every 5 minutes to influence your perception of the passing of time. Since DURR is not currently shipping and I already own an iPhone with a clock and a vibrating buzzer, I feel like this should be doable with an app. There’s already a Pebble app so I’m sure it’s not crazy. If this doesn’t currently exist, how hard might it be to write one myself? I’ve compiled things in XCode before but not written my own from-scratch Objective-C, so I’d be approaching this as a newcomer.
I want one phone number to use for talk and text, and I want to be able to send and receive texts on my iPhone or from my Mac without using a browser or a second phone number. Currently, Google Voice does this, but it looks like Google is merging Google Voice into Hangouts this spring, and 3rd party apps will no longer work. GAH! I love being able to send and receive texts for my real number on my Mac (I use GrowlVoice). I'm currently on AT&T for my iPhone, but I'm more than willing to switch to another carrier. What are my options?
