My iPhone 6S got wet during a rainy hike two days ago, and despite my efforts to dry it out so far, I still see moisture under the front camera lens and the screen is having major issues. I do not have AppleCare+. Can you help me think through my options for either repairing or replacing my phone? Specific questions below the fold. [more inside]
Trying to set up Apple Pay on a new iPhone SE has been a huge and aggravating and unsuccessful time sink. It "Just Fails". If you use Apple Pay, do you like it? How often do you use it? In what circumstances do you still pull out a credit card? After 9+ hours of phone time with Apple support and card issuer support, turns out the card I use daily is not eligible for Apple Pay because it was issued to me several years ago to replace a "partner" card. Apple does not support "partner" cards. Obtained new, the card is fine with Apple Pay. But, my card, in effect, was grandfathered back to the "partner" card. The card issuer has no solution other than applying for a new card. A second card with a different card issuer can't be activated because the card issuer is texting a verification code to the wrong number. They "don't know" why, so they've opened ticket.
I have an iphone 6 with Verizon. My contract is about to expire. Googling has left me with a wide variety of seemingly conflicting answers. What is the cheapest, smartest route for me to get a new iPhone 7? I'm not sure I trust the local Verizon people to give it to me straight, so what has your experience been? [more inside]
I didn't ask it to, but my iPhone lately keeps trying to download more music to its library. Any clues? [more inside]
When I got my iPhone, it came with a Lightning charger cable that went almost a year before I had to hold it at a certain angle in order to keep my iPhone charging. I have bought various replacements on eBay that appeared to be genuine, but got the same problem MUCH quicker with these. Is there anywhere I can get an actual genuine cable that will last, without paying a fortune? [more inside]
I have a LOT of photos of travels, adventures, loved ones and my 14-year-old Boston terrier. I am trying to figure out the best way to organize and store those photos. [more inside]
Snowmageddon has started, and now my iPhone 6 won't hold a battery charge. What's going on and how can I remedy this? [more inside]
I love my new iPhone 6S, but I have been experiencing an annoying issue in voice calls. The call randomly cuts out - it's as if my face is coming in contact with the red "end call" icon. I understand that all iPhones from the start have had a "proximity sensor" to prevent this issue, but it seems as if this sensor isn't doing its job. I never had this issue with my previous two iPhones. The software (iOS 9.2) is up to date as of today. Is there a setting I forgot about, or should I take it back to Apple? [more inside]
I like to listen to albums and playlists from my music collection on my iPhone. I don't need a streaming service, or radio, or recommendations, or social networks. I just want a simple user interface that lets me pick out an album (or maybe a playlist) and listen to it. Does such a thing exist for iOS? The built-in music app has gotten way too complicated, and does not work well for me or my family. [more inside]
It's time to buy some more lovely Apples. Can you help me decide which exact models of iPad or Air + iPhone to buy? [more inside]
I'm about to make the move from an iPhone to a Nexus 5X running Android. If you've made the iOS to Android switch recently, what was your experience like? What surprised you? What confused you? What did you forget to think about and do that you wish you had?
The title says it all, with two caveats: 1. Don't want to have to enter in all the passwords to various password protected apps. Number two is below the fold. [more inside]
Is there an easy way to track hours, tasks or projected completed, and also be able to add notes in a single app? [more inside]
It's phone upgrade time and I'm looking to switch out my 5S for the 6s+. I'm really excited about the larger battery life but am concerned that it's too huge for daily use. Am I better off getting the 6s? [more inside]
My wife is interested in buying an off-contract new iphone and switching to MVNO service but I have questions about compatibility of the two different models. Snowflakes inside. [more inside]
I am a Windows PC/Android person to the teeth, have never used any Apple hardware or software other than iTunes in my life, and am now suddenly in the position of having to use an iPhone 4S running iOS 8 as my main phone for the indefinite future. Everything about the iPhone is deeply confusing to me. Is there a way for me to recreate the Android (Lollipop) experience? If not, can you help me learn how to adjust? [more inside]
I dropped my iPhone. The screen cracked. Can I take it into an Apple Store and have them fix it there? Or do I need to send it in to them for repair? Hoping to do this same day if possible. I'm in NYC if relevant.
Are independent phone repair shops an okay place to have iPhone batteries replaced? [more inside]
Suddenly, when I use my finger on my iPhone (in some circumstances, but not others, and confusingly timed), a red dot shows up. I don't think I did anything to make this happen, but it happens fairly frequently. I've tried to google but can't find an answer on point. Thanks!
I've become obsessed with the Health app on my iPhone. I get that it probably uses GPS to calculate how far I'm walking/running in a day. But how does it know with crazy precision, how many flights of stairs I've gone up? What else can I get it to do, and how can I get the most out of this app? [more inside]
Is there an app that will let you mirror an iPhone screen on a Kindle Fire? I swear I heard of one the other day but I can't for the life of me find it now.
After posting my last question, I have purchased Downcast and am ready to use it as my main podcast organization method/app. [more inside]
Can't seem to get the podcasts that I want onto my new iPhone. [more inside]
Recently got a new iPhone 6 from Sprint. Today I went to the Find My iPhone app for the first time and someone else's email address is in the email field although it is not logged in. Why is that? No one has had access to my phone. The email address in question is email@example.com if it matters. Maybe I'm dumb and this is standard, but I couldn't find any answers on Google.
My iPhone 5S has a ton of stuff in "Other" storage (iTunes screenshot); I don't even have disk space to do the latest iOS update. I see this is a common problem, surely some of you have a solution? [more inside]
I typically carry my iPhone in my pants pocket and not infrequently take it out to find that it has successfully bypassed the four digit lock code needed to wake it up, activated an app, and successfully given itself several meaningless - but potentially consequential - commands. I can think of at least two reasons why this should not be possible, but it happens on average a couple times a week. What the hell is going on? [more inside]
Updated my iPhone software the other day (iPhone 5) and now the sideswipe gesture seems to be on a hair trigger. There's a couple frequently-used apps I have where swiping in from the right with one finger allows you to delete a line; now instead it swipes the whole screen forward (into the next day on the calender, for example). Ditto in zoom --- if I'm zoomed in on a page with small print in Safari, I can't seem to move the page over to see the right hand side without Safari taking this as a "next" gesture and loading up a whole new page. Is there anyway I can disable a particular gesture in iOS8? Or has Apple changed something so that I'm supposed to be using two fingers or double tapping or some such in order to get back my "delete a single line" functionality? [more inside]
My current Android phone is dying, and I've had bad luck with other Android phones. Money is real tight right now, but I'm thinking about buying this used Apple iPhone 4 for $95. Will I regret the purchase? [more inside]
I hate my awful, auto-dialing, MotoX android with a passion and am counting the days until the introduction and release of iPhone6 in September. Help me come up with a strategy to get one of the early models and not have to wait months until there is a significant amount of product for general distribution. In other words I want to actually have an iPhone 6 in my hands in September. How do I do it?
My wife's iPhone 5 seems to have a hardware failure. I'm going to try taking it to the Apple Store tonight, anticipating they'll have to send it in for repairs. It's out-of-warranty, so we'll likely have to pay for the repair. The question I have: is there a loaner program? She needs something while it's out. I know they had one for a defect--is it available for all repairs?
I've got an old Verizon iPhone I would dearly love to keep as long as possible, because once I give it up for a newer one I lose my unlimited data plan. (Grumble! Rant!). [more inside]
I'm getting frequent alerts on my iPhone that my free 5gb of iCloud storage is full. Most of this is from years of photos on my phone--in fact, that's pretty much the only thing on my phone I would care about having backed up. I also think most/all of the images on my phone are already backed up to my computer in Lightroom. Is there a convenient/automatic way to handle what photos stay on my phone and what photos are backed up to iCloud? [more inside]
I want to make and receive calls when I'm driving, but I want to do it as safely as possible. I've tried two different Bluetooth devices, and they were both terrible. [more inside]
I went to get my 16GB iPhone 5 repaired or replaced under the iPhone 5 Sleep/Wake Button Replacement Program today, and after some testing and such I was issued a loaner phone (also a 16GB iPhone 5) and told that mine will be repaired in about 6-8 days. I think I'd like to just keep the loaner, and it seems like that may not be encouraged but may be possible... [more inside]
The ghost of Steve Jobs and I disagree on smart phone design. Can I make an Android phone work with all my existing Apple stuff? And if so, which Android phone should I get? [more inside]
IMAP is supposed to be able to preserve message state information across clients. So why is it that my email read/unread states aren't transferring from my Macbook to my iPhone? [more inside]
Is there an equivalent of Instapaper or Pocket, but more or less optimized for saving and decluttering (long) email threads? (Gmail, specifically?) [more inside]
My iPhone deleted all of my contacts, and none of the advice I've found on the internet for getting them back has worked. [more inside]
This is simple. When my phone is in portrait modein the native music app, you get a useful player. But in landscape mode the screen turns into a collection of album covers to choose music. Which stinks. Any way to have the portrait usability in landscape mode?
I have a no-contract plan at Virgin Mobile USA, which I like because it is so cheap ($35/month for unlimited data and enough calling). The downside of cheap and no-contract is expensive phones. However, I just lost my Android phone and would like to switch back to iPhone. My options at Virgin are iPhone 4, for $200, iPhone 4s, for $314, or iPhone 5, for more than I want to pay really. How to decide? [more inside]
So ever since the new iTunes version came out for iPhone, when you open it up, it starts at the radio screen. Not "Now Playing" or even "Songs." It opens to the thing that doesn't work with my usage plan and I have to change it back. Every. Single. Time. So It's an annoyance. The question is, is there ANY way to change it short of jailbreaking the thing?
I have an iPhone. I use iPhoto on a MacBook. What settings for iCloud, Photo Stream, iTunes, etc will stop the frustrating situation I find myself in? [more inside]
Just curious if I should use the iCloud? Will it make things complicated for me? Make it easier? Do I need it? Am I using it already?? [more inside]
In spring of 2014 I will be getting an iPhone 5S. I cannot figure out how to get a plan that includes tethering so I can generate wifi for my non-cellular iPad mini. What will I need to do to activate that during my order (I am switching from Verizon to AT&T) and how do I find out how much it will cost in addition to my unlimited talk/text plus XGB of data? I have already contacted customer support and they have given me the same unhelpful stuff that's on the AT&T website.
Is there a way to disable iTunes Radio on the iPhone, or at least keep it from being the default Music app selection and overriding my previous selections and playlists? [more inside]
I was given a iphone 4s from a relative as a gift. I already have a nice android and thought it would be cool to just use the iphone as a ipod instead of just selling the gift and risk offending them. It came factory reset and stays on a activation screen awaiting a sim card. I can not figure out how to get past this screen and just use it as a device which is fairly easy to do with any android phone. Do I need to "unlock" or "jailbreak" the phone to bypass the sim card need or do I need to buy a sim card just to use it as a ipod with no carrier or phone functionality? Please help and recommend any useful software.
Is there a way I can buy a new iPhone 5 (not 5s or 5c), white, 16GB, unlocked, unsubsidized, with support for the T-Mobile's AWS band (some early iPhone 5 models didn't have this, model A1428 added it). [more inside]
Have looked up what seems like every bit of help for iMessage, but can't get it to work for us. Situation is: I have an iphone 4GS, latest iOS. iMessage is now working, on my own apple account (firstname.lastname@example.org). Have sim with texts and data included. Husband has my old iPhone 3GS, updated software, iMessage will not work. Is on another apple account (email@example.com). Has sim with texts and data included, same network as mine. Bought my son an iPod touch 4th gen, iMessage will not work. On his own apple account (firstname.lastname@example.org) [more inside]
If I have an update already downloaded OTA but not installed on my iPhone, will updating through iTunes delete the OTA download once the update is done? I want to know this because I tried to install the 7.0.2 update on my iPhone 5S (running 7.0.1) and it was unable to verify the update a number of times when trying to install it. So I plugged it into iTunes and did the update through a Mac. Does the OTA download get deleted on the iPhone when the update is done through the Mac? I don't want to have the update taking up room somewhere on my iPhone.
This post about gadget fatigue on the blue prompted this question. I just bought the most recent iteration of the iPad. I have an old iPhone and an even older MacBook Pro, and after less than 24 hours with the iPad, I’m getting the impression that the it's superfluous to my life. Please present arguments to the contrary, so that I can make up my mind whether to return it. (I've read this Ask, and this Ask, and this Ask, but the tech changes so quickly that much of what is suggested there is dated, and plenty more apps/uses have come about since those were posted.)
