I sometimes end up in areas without Wi-Fi, for days at a time, and I do not want to be bored. It's there a good way to preemptively save reading to an iPad or iPhone for this scenario? What strategies work for you? What is the best approach for news feeds? How about magazines or ebooks?. Any other tips?
I'm looking for best practices for using our iPhones and iPads on public Wi-Fi networks. That is, what can we do to best protect/secure/encrypt the data that is transmitted over such networks to/from the devices (aside from not using the public networks in the first place)? Would using a VPN accomplish this? Any recommendations for one? Something else? These are iPhone 7's and iPad Pro's, all running the latest version of iOS 10. Thank you!
I have the best weather app, Dark Skies. I am looking for an app that will show me historical weather data by day, or something close to it. My ideal app would show me today, the record temps, and then just historical data for the date. E.g., the temp last year, the year before, in 1964, etc. I'm most interested in temperature data, but other stuff like precipitation would be great too. I feel like some enterprising soul must have made an app like this.
Since I got my (wifi only) iPad three years ago, all texts to my phone number would show up in iMessage on both my iPhone and iPad, and same with text messages to my email address -- until yesterday. [more inside]
Looking for iPad apps and learning games for a four-year-old. [more inside]
About four days ago, my iPad stopped showing images in web pages--there's either a grayed out box where they should be or they're just missing. All the text loads fine, it really just looks like image resources are deciding not to load. This happens in Safari, and in Safari view controller views like Tweetbot (so it's Webkit-wide?) Force quit Safari, restarted, still broken. Upgraded it from 9.2 to 9.3.1 this morning, and same thing. Did I toggle some setting inadvertently? Or is this a bug, and if so, how do I fix it?
I want to store my 200GB of photos in the cloud. Only in the cloud. Can you please walk me through this like I'm 5? I want to STORE all my photos somewhere in the cloud - not just a backup of pix on my hard drive, but actually have them live there and only there. I'm having trouble working through the various options I might have because I have specific (maybe impossible?) things I do and do not want to do in the process. [more inside]
I like to listen to albums and playlists from my music collection on my iPhone. I don't need a streaming service, or radio, or recommendations, or social networks. I just want a simple user interface that lets me pick out an album (or maybe a playlist) and listen to it. Does such a thing exist for iOS? The built-in music app has gotten way too complicated, and does not work well for me or my family. [more inside]
It's time to buy some more lovely Apples. Can you help me decide which exact models of iPad or Air + iPhone to buy? [more inside]
The title says it all, with two caveats: 1. Don't want to have to enter in all the passwords to various password protected apps. Number two is below the fold. [more inside]
Is there an easy way to track hours, tasks or projected completed, and also be able to add notes in a single app? [more inside]
A friend's child passed away this week. They left behind an iPhone, iPad and MacBook, but no passwords. Looking for recommendations on best course of action to access the devices. [more inside]
So, I have a standard Notes app on my iPhone and iPad. Lots of problems lately with reading/deleting mail on both, particularly with Yahoo!, so I deleted my Yahoo! and Gmail accounts and downloaded the particular apps for each instead. Then I made a note in the Notes app and to my dismay saw that most of my notes had disappeared. I googled this and learned that the Notes app may have assigned my notes to the email accounts I deleted (why?) but searching those online email accounts has only uncovered some, not all, my missing notes. iCloud doesn't have them either. Are they gone forever, hive mind? Can you think of something I've missed?
I'm finally making the switch from PC to Mac, and I have some questions to make sure it all goes smoothly with my peripherals, which are currently synced to my PC. I have an iPhone 6 and an iPad 4th gen updated to the latest iOS. I'm specifically concerned with keeping my text messages and app data. [more inside]
Gmail does a great job of filtering spam at the site but it's all getting fetched to Mail on my iPhone & iPad. What do I do to get only "primary" mail in Mail?
I somehow lost an app from my iPhone - it's still on my iPad - how can I recover it from the iPad? [more inside]
Someone has requested my assistance in finding the best Bible app for iOS. [more inside]
I'm looking for a counter/tallying app (akin to mdevore's Flexible Counter) which allows for realtime syncing between users. That is, I'd like to be able to increment a counter and have the new value quickly show up for another device. Does such a thing exist? [more inside]
Lately I've found it difficult to find anything new to play on my iPhone (have an iPhone 5 and an iPad, but typically use my iPhone for this sort of thing). I've been playing the same old games for a while now and need some new ones. [more inside]
I want to fly through my email. GTD/Zero inbox style. Trouble multiple accounts including .Mac, gmail and Gmail for business. I thought I found a desktop client - MailPilot for OSX - but it's just not doing well enough (it's development is too slow.) Meanwhile, I hear that you can be super clever with Gmail - More inside! We have a several Macs at home. We want to securely connect to any of them from outside of home, via other Macs or iPhone or iPad and pull off files or use the home computer via the remote Mac/iDevice if needed. Talk to us like we're not tech savy and tell us how to do this. All the macs are running 10.9.2.
Looking for an iOS app that will let me set up a table (of dice scores and results), then roll on that table by pushing a button. For example, I might set up a table 'FOO': 1-2 = A, 3-4 = B, 5-6 = C. I could then push the FOO button, and it'd roll a d6 and give me A, B or C. Does this sort of thing exist?
Can anyone update the answers to this question about viewing the Google maps I've created (My Maps, My Places, or whatever it's called now) on an iPhone? [more inside]
The CEO of a small business that is one of my clients insists on "signing all the checks" – he likes to keep an eye on everything that is being purchased and all money that is being spent. The accounting department would like to help modernize the process, and he's on board with signing them online, using a touch screen device. (He wants to use his iPhone, he does have an iPad, too.) How can I prevent the default iPhone mail.app from showing ALL my emails in the inbox as well as in their respective folders? [more inside]
I'm beginning development of first iOS app and I aim to know as much as I can about what I don't know about app development. [more inside]
I have an iphone. Today I will be getting a MotoX. I don't really know a lot about smartphones in general or Android in general (or hell, even ios really) except that I assume there are going to be a few hiccups in the transition. Help me avoid those hiccups! [more inside]
I have an iPhone. I use iPhoto on a MacBook. What settings for iCloud, Photo Stream, iTunes, etc will stop the frustrating situation I find myself in? [more inside]
Just curious if I should use the iCloud? Will it make things complicated for me? Make it easier? Do I need it? Am I using it already?? [more inside]
I'd like to meditate more. I have the Simply Be app and like it, but would like to try others. MeFites, what do you recommend?
What should I learn next: Node.js or Android development? [more inside]
In spring of 2014 I will be getting an iPhone 5S. I cannot figure out how to get a plan that includes tethering so I can generate wifi for my non-cellular iPad mini. What will I need to do to activate that during my order (I am switching from Verizon to AT&T) and how do I find out how much it will cost in addition to my unlimited talk/text plus XGB of data? I have already contacted customer support and they have given me the same unhelpful stuff that's on the AT&T website.
I have an iphone and an ipad which I use daily. Due to work policies, my data is setup via Outlook (not Exchange) and synced via iTunes to both devices. I use iCloud to maintain mirrored info for websites, pictures, etc but NOT contacts. I'm getting tired of having to plug both devices in to sync them to the same data. Is there anyway to use iTunes to sync to my phone and then use iCloud to maintain data integrity across to the ipad? Or will this end up giving me duplicates in my Outlook contacts?
I am interested in being alerted if and when jailbreaks to iOS 6.1.3/4 and iOS 7 are released, but I have no interest in the daily news about jailbreaks on the legitimate sites like iphonehacks.com or developers' twitter accounts. Is there an RSS feed or email service that will alert me if and only if a legitimate jailbreak is released? [more inside]
This post about gadget fatigue on the blue prompted this question. I just bought the most recent iteration of the iPad. I have an old iPhone and an even older MacBook Pro, and after less than 24 hours with the iPad, I’m getting the impression that the it's superfluous to my life. Please present arguments to the contrary, so that I can make up my mind whether to return it. (I've read this Ask, and this Ask, and this Ask, but the tech changes so quickly that much of what is suggested there is dated, and plenty more apps/uses have come about since those were posted.) I lost my iTunes installation in a hard drive crash. I have a backup from many months ago. I have an iPad and iPhone that have never been synced to iTunes because I got them since the hard drive failure. I'd like to re-install iTunes from the backup and sync my iPad and iPhone to the re-installed iTunes without losing any data or re-installing apps. How would I do that? [more inside]
Does iOS 7 (beta) sync to iTunes 10.7 or will iTunes 11.0.x be required? I have held back on upgrading iTunes past 10.7, but I am wondering if I'll be forced to upgrade to 11.0.x once iOS 7 is released. I sync via USB on a Mac with 10.6.8. I'm not inserted in WiFi sync and don't use iCloud.
If you could start from scratch, no contract holding you back...I'm confused by the comparison websites so Mefites, it needs to be with a new iPhone (to sync with the family's iCloud), I need to be able to tether it to my iPad while travelling but not for massive graphics or anything, just e-mails, websites, downloads from Amazon Kindle etc., [more inside]
Hi there, I'm teaching my Dad in China to use his Chinese App Store account - His iPhone and iPad Mini are his MAIN cameras these days, and he loves taking photos. I'm a bit rushed as I have to leave China soon, and don't have to time to search through Chinese app reviews (I don't know Chinese well anyway). So, please can you recommend any iPhone and iPad camera and photo apps (paid or free) available on the Chinese App Store that you love. Impressive apps are good; Impressive AND easy to learn and use apps (my Dad is not very tech-skilled and doesn't like complicated instructions) are the greatest. Thanks very much for your tips!!!
As of yesterday I no longer receive iMessages on my iPhone. I get them on my ipad and Mac, however. [more inside]
I am getting a Tablet for work, either a Nexus 10 or an iPad. I'm pretty well versed on the features and drawbacks for both, and I feel like if my other devices were either all Apple or all Google/Windows I'd make the choice based on matching my current device operating system ecosystem. BUT right now, each device I use has a different OS, so is there a better device to match my tablet operating system with? [more inside]
I have an iPhone5 and an original iPad, which I back up to my PC (running iTunes on Windows XP). However, now when I plug in either device to the PC and start iTunes, all the data is listed as "Other" (in an orange bar across the bottom of the window). Further, when I click "Back Up Now" the sync begins, then stops after a second or two with no error message. Can I recover from this without losing my data? [more inside]
I use an app on my iPhone and iPad called AppShopper to keep a list of iOS apps I'd like to buy. It tracks them and sends a push notification when their price changes (or when there's an update to the app). Is there another app like that out there that tracks movies, music and TV shows (and maybe apps) on the iTunes Store? If there's no app, is there a website that does this?
A friend's iPad has a screen protector that is slightly micro-bumpy and rubbery. I call it "nurbly." It breaks up reflections but doesn't dull the display the way matte screen protectors do, since it is shiny, but bumpy. Another friend has the same thing on his iPhone. Neither of them can remember where they got it. Does anyone have this and know the name of it? I want to put one on my iPad mini.

I am finally going to stop using a paper calendar and start using my laptop/iPhone/iPad instead. However, having used ol' reliable paper for so many years, I'm a bit paranoid about using Google calendar (or an app) and then losing all my data somehow... Is there an iPhone/iPad calendar app that would make me feel more "secure," or is there a service like Backupify that doesn't require a Google Apps account? I'd love to back up my Gmail too, if possible. (Am I just worrying too much? Is using iCloud enough? I am clearly clueless.)
As an aspiring artist, I've recently acquired a habit of saving to Dropbox every image I find particularly inspiring or useful as an artistic reference. This is fun and motivating, except I'm realizing that my Finder-based 'folder > subfolder' organizational structure is doing a poor job of keeping up with my needs. I'm looking for software recommendations (Mac OS X) or general tips re: sorting a frequently-accessed image collection that will eventually number into the thousands. The catch: the system needs to sync with an iPhone/iPad. [more inside]
I am writing some documentation for an app that runs on the iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad. I need a consistant way to refer to these devices and am looking for something better than "iPhone/iPod/iPad". For example: "Hold your iPhone/iPod/iPad's camera so that the QR code is centered in the brackets." I've come up with either "... iPhone/iPod/iPad (referred to as iPhone from here on)" or "IOS device" Anyone have a better idea?
I'm trying to send notes from my iDevice to my Mac, and I'm wondering if such software exists. I don't mean 'Note'-notes. [more inside]
