I'm looking for best practices for using our iPhones and iPads on public Wi-Fi networks. That is, what can we do to best protect/secure/encrypt the data that is transmitted over such networks to/from the devices (aside from not using the public networks in the first place)? Would using a VPN accomplish this? Any recommendations for one? Something else? These are iPhone 7's and iPad Pro's, all running the latest version of iOS 10. Thank you!
I have the best weather app, Dark Skies. I am looking for an app that will show me historical weather data by day, or something close to it. My ideal app would show me today, the record temps, and then just historical data for the date. E.g., the temp last year, the year before, in 1964, etc. I'm most interested in temperature data, but other stuff like precipitation would be great too. I feel like some enterprising soul must have made an app like this.
I just bought an iPad Pro and Apple Pencil. Looking for suggestions for the best apps for (1) lecturing in the classroom and (2) serving as a research notebook. [more inside]
I need to record an upcoming training classroom session from start to finish. All the videocameras I see, as well as iDevice apps that I can find, record in high def and can't store nearly enough footage. Low quality video, akin to a 1990s camcorder, is a tradeoff I'm willing to accept. I need the 8 hours to run continuously - no pauses to change storage cards or upload content in order to create space for more filming. Is there an app that will do this? If not, what's the least expensive solution?
About four days ago, my iPad stopped showing images in web pages--there's either a grayed out box where they should be or they're just missing. All the text loads fine, it really just looks like image resources are deciding not to load. This happens in Safari, and in Safari view controller views like Tweetbot (so it's Webkit-wide?) Force quit Safari, restarted, still broken. Upgraded it from 9.2 to 9.3.1 this morning, and same thing. Did I toggle some setting inadvertently? Or is this a bug, and if so, how do I fix it?
My son is playing Exploration on the iPad (a sandbox game, like a basic minecraft clone where you just build things) and while he really enjoys it, it doesn't seem capable of saving his creations. Is there another recommended game that allows saving? [more inside]
Hi all, I have a Lenovo 'PC on a stick'. It runs windows 10 and I would like to use my iPad as a primary display for it using the Duet app on iOS but it seems like in order to connect you have to go in and activate Duet on the PC first - which is a sort of catch 22 because I need a display in order to do that. Any ideas on how I could make Duet 'activate' as soon as the PC boots up and connect to the app on my ipad?
I like to listen to albums and playlists from my music collection on my iPhone. I don't need a streaming service, or radio, or recommendations, or social networks. I just want a simple user interface that lets me pick out an album (or maybe a playlist) and listen to it. Does such a thing exist for iOS? The built-in music app has gotten way too complicated, and does not work well for me or my family. [more inside]
Other than using itunes. It's so complicated. I remember there were a few programs out there where you could just usb the ipad to pc, check what you want and do the transfer seamlessly. [more inside]
My favorite video games are those in the SSX series. I loved the feeling of speed, the chance to do tricks, the reasonably graded levels, and most of all, that messing up did not mean death or stop the game. Are there iOS games that are like this? [more inside]
A friend's child passed away this week. They left behind an iPhone, iPad and MacBook, but no passwords. Looking for recommendations on best course of action to access the devices. [more inside]
My iPad 3 (the first retina) running iOS 8.1 will drop the wi-fi connection fairly regularly. This often happens when streaming video via BBC iPlayer or YouTube apps. Any suggestions on how to fix it? [more inside]
I use GoodReader for reading sheet music on an iPad (3). What wireless page turners work well with iOS (particularly with GoodReader)? I am not so much looking for Google search results that I can find on my own — but if you have experience with a page turner device and how well it works with "standard" or "common" reader apps, I'd like to hear about your positive or negative experiences!
I'd like to get my iPad engraved with: When this baby hits 88 mph / You're gonna see some serious shit. Apple rejected shit and sh*t, but accepts sh.t sh;t and sht. In your opinion, do any of those read as intentional substitutes rather than typos?
I somehow lost an app from my iPhone - it's still on my iPad - how can I recover it from the iPad? [more inside]
My laptop died. Boo. I got a new iPad Air. Yay, I guess. How should I set up my privacy, security, and general user preferences? [more inside]
Someone has requested my assistance in finding the best Bible app for iOS. [more inside]
A coworker's ex-husband's installed the iPad [Mini, though I doubt it matters] version of Grand Theft Auto (I'm not really sure where it fits in the saga) for their 6-year-old son. I'm looking for an age-appropriate alternative. [more inside]
I'm looking for a counter/tallying app (akin to mdevore's Flexible Counter) which allows for realtime syncing between users. That is, I'd like to be able to increment a counter and have the new value quickly show up for another device. Does such a thing exist? [more inside]
Does anyone have any suggestions for a flashcard app for iPad for practicing *writing* kanji? Or any recommendations for Japanese review sites for iOS apps? [more inside]
7yo daughter and I really love Fireproof Games' The Room and The Room 2. But we've played them to death. Until another sequel comes out, what other similar iPad games are there? [more inside]
Lately I've found it difficult to find anything new to play on my iPhone (have an iPhone 5 and an iPad, but typically use my iPhone for this sort of thing). I've been playing the same old games for a while now and need some new ones. [more inside]
I'm heading to graduate school soon and I'm trying to develop good habits and a good routine in preparation for that change. I've never been good with physical planners (I lose them or forget to write in them) but I always have my iPad so I'm trying to find an app that meets my needs and could use some input. [more inside]
I'm not a power Twitter user, but it's the only tool I'll have to communicate with a 1000 people at a big party next weekend Right now I have more than 200 followers to classify into five or six lists. The web interface for this is dead slow. Is there a tool which provides bulk list management? If one iOS app could do all this, hooray! However, list management is a relatively rare activity, and I'd be thrilled to learn about a suitable Twitter client as well as a utility to enable list creation. Yes, there's a drift of snowflakes within. [more inside]
Looking for an iOS app that will let me set up a table (of dice scores and results), then roll on that table by pushing a button. For example, I might set up a table 'FOO': 1-2 = A, 3-4 = B, 5-6 = C. I could then push the FOO button, and it'd roll a d6 and give me A, B or C. Does this sort of thing exist?
Can't seem to get some items to synch between devices. [more inside]
What Android or Windows 8 pen-equipped tablet should I buy for reading scientific papers, writing scientific papers, and taking notes? (Or is the app selection for the iPad sufficiently amazing that I should let it override my distaste for Apple's walled garden and the iPad's lack of an active digitizer stylus?) [more inside]
I'm beginning development of first iOS app and I aim to know as much as I can about what I don't know about app development. [more inside]
I have an iphone. Today I will be getting a MotoX. I don't really know a lot about smartphones in general or Android in general (or hell, even ios really) except that I assume there are going to be a few hiccups in the transition. Help me avoid those hiccups! [more inside]
My mom, who recently sold her home and moved into senior housing, has expressed interest in owning some sort of computing device. She's basically computer illiterate, has never been on the internet, and has trouble using my TV remote control sometimes. Am I crazy to even consider getting her an iPad? [more inside]
I'm looking for an app for my 1st gen iPad (iOS 5) that can play soundfonts and respond to a USB midi keyboard plugged in via the Camera Connection Kit. Ideally I could also set it up to fade between two different soundfonts via the keyboard's mod wheel (perhaps by mapping it as a pan control). Is there such a thing? [more inside]
What should I learn next: Node.js or Android development? [more inside]
In spring of 2014 I will be getting an iPhone 5S. I cannot figure out how to get a plan that includes tethering so I can generate wifi for my non-cellular iPad mini. What will I need to do to activate that during my order (I am switching from Verizon to AT&T) and how do I find out how much it will cost in addition to my unlimited talk/text plus XGB of data? I have already contacted customer support and they have given me the same unhelpful stuff that's on the AT&T website.
I am interested in being alerted if and when jailbreaks to iOS 6.1.3/4 and iOS 7 are released, but I have no interest in the daily news about jailbreaks on the legitimate sites like iphonehacks.com or developers' twitter accounts. Is there an RSS feed or email service that will alert me if and only if a legitimate jailbreak is released? [more inside]
This post about gadget fatigue on the blue prompted this question. I just bought the most recent iteration of the iPad. I have an old iPhone and an even older MacBook Pro, and after less than 24 hours with the iPad, I’m getting the impression that the it's superfluous to my life. Please present arguments to the contrary, so that I can make up my mind whether to return it. (I've read this Ask, and this Ask, and this Ask, but the tech changes so quickly that much of what is suggested there is dated, and plenty more apps/uses have come about since those were posted.) Does iOS 7 (beta) sync to iTunes 10.7 or will iTunes 11.0.x be required? I have held back on upgrading iTunes past 10.7, but I am wondering if I'll be forced to upgrade to 11.0.x once iOS 7 is released. I sync via USB on a Mac with 10.6.8. I'm not inserted in WiFi sync and don't use iCloud.
Hi there, I'm teaching my Dad in China to use his Chinese App Store account - His iPhone and iPad Mini are his MAIN cameras these days, and he loves taking photos. I'm a bit rushed as I have to leave China soon, and don't have to time to search through Chinese app reviews (I don't know Chinese well anyway). So, please can you recommend any iPhone and iPad camera and photo apps (paid or free) available on the Chinese App Store that you love. Impressive apps are good; Impressive AND easy to learn and use apps (my Dad is not very tech-skilled and doesn't like complicated instructions) are the greatest. Thanks very much for your tips!!!
As of yesterday I no longer receive iMessages on my iPhone. I get them on my ipad and Mac, however. [more inside]
I am getting a Tablet for work, either a Nexus 10 or an iPad. I'm pretty well versed on the features and drawbacks for both, and I feel like if my other devices were either all Apple or all Google/Windows I'd make the choice based on matching my current device operating system ecosystem. BUT right now, each device I use has a different OS, so is there a better device to match my tablet operating system with? [more inside]
I have an iPhone5 and an original iPad, which I back up to my PC (running iTunes on Windows XP). However, now when I plug in either device to the PC and start iTunes, all the data is listed as "Other" (in an orange bar across the bottom of the window). Further, when I click "Back Up Now" the sync begins, then stops after a second or two with no error message. Can I recover from this without losing my data? [more inside]
I have a (hopefully easy) question about getting Dropbox and GoodNotes to work together nicely on my iPad. [more inside]

What are the best or most notable iOS apps and games that are only available on iPad, and not on iPhone?
My parents own a WiFi only iPad and their internet connection isn't always on. Basically, they turn on the internet only when they want to use their iPad. Is there an app that can alert me (preferably via a push notification on my own iPad or iPhone) when they've gotten online?
Do you have a workflow for cross-platform annotation (Android and iOS/iPad) of ebooks? Is there a particular note-taking app that will work with DRMed ebooks AND sync my notes across tablets? [more inside]
I have an iPhone and iPad, both on iOS 6. Email works fine, but if I try and send a file from within any app, it looks like it works - but it doesn't. This is the case for the two different mail accounts I have set up (one Gmail, one Exchange) and it's driving me round the twist. [more inside]

I'm a very happy owner of a new iPad. I also have the cheap, Chinese knockoff equivalents of the Apple Camera Connection Kit (1 for CF cards, another for SDHC and variants). They work great and cost me next to nothing. I shoot raw and fine quality jpeg pictures. How can I transfer only my jpegs to the iPad without tranferring the raw files (in this case .NEF at the same time? [more inside]
