I'm working on an iOs app (a wordy reference work). We've enabled a user to shortcut between sections via left/right swiping, and want to add an animated transition effect - something prefab we can simply plug in, as we don't have time to cook something up from scratch. [more inside]
MotionX, the company who made my favorite GPS app, GPS Drive, has gotten out of the business of driving apps, citing an inability to compete with Apple and Google. I'm looking for a new app for iOS with a few specific features. [more inside]
I need to record an upcoming training classroom session from start to finish. All the videocameras I see, as well as iDevice apps that I can find, record in high def and can't store nearly enough footage. Low quality video, akin to a 1990s camcorder, is a tradeoff I'm willing to accept. I need the 8 hours to run continuously - no pauses to change storage cards or upload content in order to create space for more filming. Is there an app that will do this? If not, what's the least expensive solution?
My GF and I are at a café with our respective, slightly outmoded Android and iOS phones. We want to play a game, but Spaceteam is TOO LOUD for public. What’s something fun, quiet and cross-platform? Thanks! [more inside]
About four days ago, my iPad stopped showing images in web pages--there's either a grayed out box where they should be or they're just missing. All the text loads fine, it really just looks like image resources are deciding not to load. This happens in Safari, and in Safari view controller views like Tweetbot (so it's Webkit-wide?) Force quit Safari, restarted, still broken. Upgraded it from 9.2 to 9.3.1 this morning, and same thing. Did I toggle some setting inadvertently? Or is this a bug, and if so, how do I fix it?
Has anybody tried doing Zombies, Run! on a bike? I hate running but enjoy biking, so this is of interest to me.
What's the best app for graphing out a phylogenetic tree, including pictures, for a fantasy taxonomy? (OSX or iOS, please.) [more inside]
I really, really loved playing Monument Valley. It was immersive and a delightful puzzle and visually excellent and there were no in-app purchases I didn't want. No intrusive ads or tricksy cheats or extras. I can't find a similar game to love, and I can't find current information on new chapters of MV. Help! [more inside]
Hello fellow parents, I'm looking for advice on how to best set up an iOS device for a child. [more inside]

My son is playing Exploration on the iPad (a sandbox game, like a basic minecraft clone where you just build things) and while he really enjoys it, it doesn't seem capable of saving his creations. Is there another recommended game that allows saving? [more inside]

I have a 200GB Photos library in iCloud, so in order to have access to my library on my iPad, I have to optimize space. I'd like to make a few of my albums always available in full resolution on my iPad. Is there a painless way to do this? [more inside]
I'm looking for an app where I can securely store photographs of my IDs- these might include drivers license, passport, health insurance card, etc. From what I can tell, LemonWallet used to do this but was discontinued. Is there an equivalent that is still available? [more inside]
I'm a midcareer technical professional who is learning Swift and building an iOS app that I plan to release for free. I'm not much of a designer and I don't really want to be one; I'm used to working with staff designers and implementing their designs. What are some places where I can try to enlist free or cheap design help? [more inside]
Give me your silliest, weirdest, cutest photo editing apps. [more inside]
I am looking for apps that will let me take handwritten notes in a file/on a PDF and also view two different (arbitrary) parts of those notes/PDFs at the same time. I need this functionality on a Samsung Galaxy Note 8, a Mac running OSX, and an iPad Pro. [more inside]
No sooner had I rewritten my iOS app to rely on the backend service Parse ("hundreds of thousands of developers trust us!" it said on the website) than did Facebook kill it. What should I do? [more inside]
I'm looking for an app (iOS or Android or webapp, no preference) that displays the names (and ideally pictures) of the six people that work in my office, and when a name is tapped, an email is automatically sent alerting the person that they have a visitor. And it needs to be free. Explanations within. [more inside]
I just remembered an iPhone app I had that had different audio 'games' that could be downloaded. Very cartoony with weird characters. Often times involving live audio processing via a microphone (At the time I bought a chord that enabled me to input any other instruments/sound devices into 1/8" jack). [more inside]
I've tried a bunch of pomodoro-style apps that I haven't done well with. I recently found one that's like Pomodoro except there's a growing plant, and if you mess with your phone you'll kill the plant. This works for me for whatever reason. I was wondering if anyone knew of other apps like that; especially ones with more real-world consequences. [more inside]
I'm an experienced programmer who needs to make an iOS app. I like to learn by inference and lack patience for verbose pedagogy, so I'm asking for resources that you would show to a hacker who needs to get up to speed with iOS development. [more inside]
I love my new iPhone 6S, but I have been experiencing an annoying issue in voice calls. The call randomly cuts out - it's as if my face is coming in contact with the red "end call" icon. I understand that all iPhones from the start have had a "proximity sensor" to prevent this issue, but it seems as if this sensor isn't doing its job. I never had this issue with my previous two iPhones. The software (iOS 9.2) is up to date as of today. Is there a setting I forgot about, or should I take it back to Apple? [more inside]
I'm looking for an app to log my weightlifting workouts. Think Starting Strength or Bill Starr's 5x5 but with variations. I've tried Strong for iOS and FitNotes for Android. FitNotes is close to my ideal, but I'm not on Android anymore. [more inside]
I would like to have regular access to my OS X image library that is being kept on my Macbook using 'Photos' by the other machines within the home network, preferable without using Icloud Photo Sharing but with a NAS/Timecapsule. [more inside]

Is there a 'yes/no' goal tracker app you'd recommend? [more inside]
Since late October/early November, my iPhone 6s (128 GB Verizon, not jailbroken) has been ruthlessly leaking cellular data for no obvious reason. After many days of troubleshooting, I narrowed the culprit down to the infuriatingly unspecific "Documents & Data" category in the iOS 9 “Settings/Cellular/System Services” settings. How can I determine specifically what “documents” and/or “data” is causing the data leak? [more inside]
My wife is tired of coming home to a dark house, and I want something to fiddle with. I'm thinking about getting a "smart" setup of some sort to control the lights (details inside). What's the best overall solution? We're exclusively a Mac/iOS household. [more inside]
My career has always been on the peripheral of more technical roles and I've excelled without getting to code-specific knowledge but in my job search everyone seems to want a product manager who can use code, even if it's not part of their job. What language should I learn? [more inside]

Hi all, I have a Lenovo 'PC on a stick'. It runs windows 10 and I would like to use my iPad as a primary display for it using the Duet app on iOS but it seems like in order to connect you have to go in and activate Duet on the PC first - which is a sort of catch 22 because I need a display in order to do that. Any ideas on how I could make Duet 'activate' as soon as the PC boots up and connect to the app on my ipad?
It's that time of year when my family and I trade lists of things we could get for one another if we haven't already found something on our own. We usually just do a running email thread, and it devolves into sub threads excluding the person of interest, where all the other family members claim what they're getting or have gotten for the person who isn't on the cc:list. Until of course someone (Mom) replies on the wrong thread, and spills the beans. ;) [more inside]
I subscribe to the NY Times and use their app on my ios 9 device. Lately they've had a randoml auto-playing ad with video and sound either when I open the app or when it refreshes. I work in an environment where I can use a phone to read the news but absolutely cannot suddenly have sound blaring. Will the new ad blocking apps block in-app ads in the Times app? I know I can block in Safari but I use the app to also read the paper on the subway. [more inside]
My organization is doing more and more Periscope broadcasting as part of our outreach. We've found some budget to buy a specific setup with which to do this, rather than relying on staff member's personal devices. What's our best bet? [more inside]
I'm a fan of the vocabulary builder feature on Kindle that stores a list, with definitions, of words looked up while reading. Is there an equivalent for iPhone for web? The vocab builder apps all seem to teach new words; I'm not averse to copying and pasting into the app, as long as it keeps history of searches. Open to any non-app suggestions too. My temporary solution of dumping words + definitions into Notes is not working so well.
I like to listen to albums and playlists from my music collection on my iPhone. I don't need a streaming service, or radio, or recommendations, or social networks. I just want a simple user interface that lets me pick out an album (or maybe a playlist) and listen to it. Does such a thing exist for iOS? The built-in music app has gotten way too complicated, and does not work well for me or my family. [more inside]
I've been doing a lot of hands-on failure analysis and inspection for my work, and I need a good way to dictate inspection notes using my iphone. You know in TV when the coroner describes the autopsy as he's doing it? Like that. I'd really prefer it to be an iOS app, but some kind of laptop app would be vaguely acceptable. Specific Required features inside. [more inside]
I need an app to easily track various things in my life that can be captured as numbers. I'm sure the app I'm looking for exists, but I just don't know how to search for it. [more inside]

I'm about to make the move from an iPhone to a Nexus 5X running Android. If you've made the iOS to Android switch recently, what was your experience like? What surprised you? What confused you? What did you forget to think about and do that you wish you had?
Is there an iOS app that lets you build pauses into a video's playback at specific points? Here's my dream scenario: a video begins playing on the iPad until it hits the first pause point, like at 0:07. The video stays paused there until the user next taps the screen, at which point it plays until the next pause point, and waits there. Is there anything out there like that?
What's the best iOS app for a couple to share their restaurant experiences with each other? [more inside]
I accidentally deleted an iPhone app (Voice Recorder). Associated with the app were audio files that I didn't have anywhere else, some of which I'd be pretty bummed to lose. There are no phone backups. Is it possible that these files still exist on my phone, and with the right tools, one could recover them? [more inside]
Are there any basic online tips for how to approach mobile app design (for print designers who have a formal training)? Resources for how to design for different screen sizes (there are so many of them), latest trends in UI/UX, and most helpful critique/help forums for beginners would be a great help.
I need a grocery app that my husband and I can both add to/sync lists for iOS (web interface nice but not mandatory). We've been using Buy Me a Pie, but it's gotten glitchy for us and won't let me add him to lists. I've seen this post, and will check out the other recs, but it's a year old, which is forever in app development time. Possible complication: spouse beta tests new iOS versions on his phone for work reasons.
I had a couple of very odd experiences with the Facebook mobile browser page (Chrome for iOS on an iPhone 6) that seem beyond coincidence, and it makes me wonder if Facebook is rummaging through my phone, or if iOS is giving some kind of privileged access to some of my information to Facebook.
