First serious health scare of adulthood - how to cope?

I'm on the waiting list for an unpleasant but not life-threatening procedure, but the results might be Something Serious. So I'm obviously terrified and already prone to hypochondria. This is starting to impact my day-to-day mental functions. Scared snowflakes inside. [more inside]

Can I chalk this all up to anxiety/stress? (YANMD)

I had a stress breakdown a little over a month ago and have been dealing with various physical symptoms since then. A few things in particular have been bothering me over the past 1-2 weeks and I'm curious if my hypochondria might be getting the best of me. [more inside]

Inguinal Strain?

So for the last few weeks I've been having some minor testicular pain. Like every 10k steps one step will give me a twinge or something. Or if i'm leaning forward too far in a computer chair i'll feel some pain. Well that one step has been enough to drive me insane thinking the worst. Well I went to the doctor today and he spent a few minutes feeling around told me to buy a jock strap and gave me some ibuprofen and told me to take it until it ran out. He told me I had something called an inguinal strain. Is this an actual diagnosis? or is this him reacting to me telling him that i was walking on uneven ground slipped on mud and gained my balance. That particular event wasn't painful but, i thought it might have been somewhat relevant. I thought going to the doctor would give me some peace of mind. Am i being crazy?

How do I know if I'm actually short of breath, or if it's psychosomatic?

Back in the 1990s I had a lot of actual health problems mixed with some stuff that was probably psychosomatic. I had bad allergies and many episodes of shortness of breath, but while the allergies were real my doctors never figured out what the shortness of breath was about. Now my allergies are acting up, and after weeks of me worrying the shortness of breath would come back too, here it is. How can you tell if you are experiencing actual, allergy-related shortness of breath, or just having a panic attack about the possibility? [more inside]

This million-dollar workup is probably all for nothing

Earlier this week somebody found me passed out on the floor. From there, I got dragged in to see the doctor, who ran some tests (all negative so far). That's not the problem. The problem is: I feel ashamed and guilty, like I'm making this all up, despite that the objective facts are that I fainted, my blood pressure was found to be 50/40 (after fluids), and that I have a history of syncope. How to pick a therapist to help my anxiety (before pregnancy/parenting)

How do I pick the right therapist to help with my anxiety, stress, indecisiveness, and perfectionist tendencies? What kinds of therapy/techniques/approaches might be most helpful? How do I quickly assess whether to stick with someone or look elsewhere? What are reasonable expectations of how much I can improve in therapy and how quickly? I'm terrible at making decisions-- I need help! (Especially since we want to start trying for kids in a few months so I feel real urgency to make progress quickly to feel comfortable going ahead, for both my and the kid's sake.) DC-area, FYI. How to not freak out while waiting to see a doctor?

I have had some weird blood test results lately. My doctor is not sure what it's from, but said that worst case scenario would be leukemia. She wants me to see a hematologist but the soonest available appointment is till over a week away. I have always suffered from pretty severe hypochondria/health-anxiety/whatever, and the fact that my doctor mentioned the L word, and the uncertainty and waiting, not to mention the absolute worst timing, is killing me. I can barely work or sleep. [more inside]

Phrases & aphorisms to calm the hypochondriac's mind

My roommate has some trouble with related to hypochondria. She has found expressions like the following to be helpful in slowing down her anxious thoughts regarding illness: "You shouldn't be worried if you lose your car keys. You should be worried when you forget what your car keys are for." Does anyone know any similar expressions for when one shouldn't worry about a physical or mental symptom?
