How many working hyperlinks does the Web have now? "Working hyperlink" defined as "will bring up something other than a 404 when clicked". It doesn't matter if that something is a URL-squatting advertiser or a never-to-be-followed "This is my first blog entry" blog entry from 1996.

Back-of-napkin math welcome.

Help me find the Internet Poets

Help me find the Internet Poets! So I can think of lots of examples of prose literature making use of internet culture and structure - ARGs, fake blogs, novels like Geoff Ryan's 731, etc.

But I can't think of anyone doing a similar kind of thing with poetry. Surely there are lots of fun things a poet can do - such as including random links/gif/videos in a poem to deepen its meaning.

So is there anyone out there doing this?

How can I create or add a group of Favorites in Internet Explorer?

How can I turn a long list of hyperlinks into either a list of filenames in Windows Explorer or a list of Favorites in Internet Explorer? Say I have 1,000 hyperlinks in a list so it is 1,000 entries long (could be in an Excel file, a Word file, or on a web page). I want to have these 1,000 hyperlinks as Favorites, which seems to be the same as converting them from the content of one file to the file names of 1,000 files. I can manually save each hyperlink as the name of a file, but if there are 1,000, and if they need to be updated every week, that would be a killer. I need an automated solution.

Eliminating Hyperlinks in Excel X for Mac?

Probably ridiculously obvious Excel question: how do I set it so that a URL is never turned into a hyperlink? It's really as simple as that, I don't want hyperlinks in a spreadsheet ever, I don't ever have a need to click a link in Excel and go to a website. I don't want properly formed URLs that I put into a spreadsheet to turn into hyperlinks at all, but even if it's a sheet by sheet or column by column fix, that's fine, I just can't find out how to do this at all. Oh, I should note that this is using Excel X for Mac.

When is a wiki not a wiki?

I'm setting up a little site that's like an encylopedia. I want the instant-linking that I've had in VooDoo pad (wiki)--when I type "Lincoln" it automatically links to the "Lincoln" page. But I don't need any other wiki features--this is not collaborative. Is there some way to just get that handy quick-link feature as I write my articles? Thanks, smarties!

How do I make a web page automatically hyperlink words with links to monetize them?

WebSoftware/TechieFilter: How would I go about making a site where different words automatically link to google search terms/ adwords containing the term? I noticed on many sites that in a paragraph, which for example, would contain the word "Money", every time that word appears it would automaticcally link to an google adwords page with ads triggered by the word money- sort of like an automatic program that scans each page (say of press releases or news) and automatically highlights words in the documents and links them to pages which generate income for the site-

another example would be a page where the word "amazon" (say like on fatwallet) or "staples" would automatically link to a store, with the site you are coming from considered the refferer and getting a commission.

is this off the shelf software? what is it called? thanks for any help in the right direction.

PDF'able Word Intra-document hyperlinks?

Intra-document hyperlinks (bookmarks) in MS Word Documents that can are preserved in PDF documents--Is this possible? I create directory of information as a promotional device for a service I offer. The directory contains many dozens of phone numbers, grouped by county.

It would be great if I enhance my directory so one could jump from Page 1 to any one of the 11 following pages with a mouse click. Is this possible in Word? In a way that will survive distilling the document into a PDF? Or, if I convert the Word Document into an HTML Document (actually, I'd like to avoid this since much of the formating would be lost in HTML, me thinks...)?

Can anyone recommend a program (in say perl or java or something) that will execute on my linux web server and a) slurp the file references in the pages (html, php) and b) compare them to the actual files in my web root tree giving me a list of all of the unreferenced files (not referenced on public web pages)? I want to clean up this junky file system, but I don't want to break any links and I inherited the mess. Thanks.

Problems With Bookmarks/Anchors in Word-PDF Conversion, and "Alt" Text for Images

PDF question about named destinations, text touchup tool and "alt text" for images. (More inside) Hours have been spent googlng, to no avail: We have large source Word documents with bookmarks set up for internal nav. When converted to pdf, those bookmarks metamorphose into some kind of internal nav points, but if we try to link to them from html (www.page.com/document.pdf#place) it won't work. Anyone know why?

So, to get round that, we laboriously define named destinations in Acrobat Standard v6.0. That is time-consuming, but worls. However, if there is a small change, or a typo, we have trouble: going back to the source document means manually re-doing all the named destinations again. But changing one character (eg "Associatoin" to "Association") with the text touch-up tools adds between 40 and 90K to the file size! Anyone know how to stop this massive bloating?

Finally, where oh where do we add "alt-text" to pictures in the pdf for screen readers?

Is it a good idea to hide links to another site on one of my sites?

So, I manage a fairly high traffic website. But, there are a couple other websites that I'm involved with that I would like to link to off of my day job site for spidering reasons. If I just include these links on a couple of pages and hide them via comment tags, will the spider still go to them? Is this not up to search engine ethics? Are there search engine ethics? Thanks in advance.
