Looking for help with purchasing a safety razor.

Is there a product that meets the gold standard for the safety razor? One that is durable yet practical? While there are many interesting and beautiful designs to chose from, I find many of them to be a bit vain for my taste, and I would appreciate your input. I'm looking for something practical in price, but my budget should be of no concern when it comes to your advice. [more inside]

Break my daughter's heart or get sicker

I have come to the realisation that I can no longer safely or humanely look after the 2 cats my daughter grew up with. It is not fair to them, my neighbours, my landlord, and I am unwell and it is difficult for me. But my daughter has gone through so much in the past few years, bulimia, OCD, anxiety, depression, at least 2 rapes, her grandmother died, her father went to prison for a horrible crime. She can't take the cats on, she lives in a high rise on a limited income. There is no one else. I can't face telling her that I need to find a new home for them, and causing her more grief, but I can't keep doing this. It's too hard. I also love the cats but I'm not being a good enough kitty mama. What do I do?

Hair Here; Hair There; Hair, Hair, Everywhere

I have long, dark hair. I know that I will be responsible for a long trail of shed strands and hairballs, possibly for the rest of my life. Thus, I've developed various coping mechanisms: constant vigilance about certain areas of the bathroom, tying my hair up during food prep, &c. I'd like to know what habits you other longhairs keep in order to reduce your hair-trail in home/professional environments -- and on your clothes. [more inside]

There's a rat in the kitchen, what am I going to do

I’m moving out in a couple of months, but I have to live with the possibility of rodent roommates until then. How do I do that hygienically and sanely? (Most advice I have seen focuses on getting rid of the rodents; I am asking, how do you protect yourself from the diseases they bring in the meantime. Without freaking out on the regular) [more inside]

Cleaning my treasured comb

A few years back, this wonderful community helped me find one of my favorite personal items, a beautiful vintage folding comb. I use it often. The only trouble is, I use it after I have applied a variety of hair products, including, but certainly not limited to, petroleum-based pomades like Murray's and water-based pomades like Layrite and Reuzel. The result is gross grey-ish buildup that I suspect is a combination of hair gunk, scalp gunk, and pocket lint. [more inside]

Is this old 2nd hand Harmonica hygienic to use?

Harmonica hygiene filter: A few years ago I was given a beautiful Hohner Chromonica 280C. Stories of fungus buildup in reeds (and later becoming aware of certain facts about previous owners) led to doubts which always prevented me from using it. So, how hygienic is it actually? [more inside]

Help me sort of rough it, car camping style

My boyfriend is a bike mechanic and he's going to be providing support for a large mountain bike stage race taking place over six days. He asked me to come, which sounds like a fun active vacation thing to do. It will be him and his business partner in a company truck, and me in a second car. There will be hot sweaty days of work, chilly nights and a mix of car camping and possibly a hotel here and there. I'd like advice on clothing and what else I should bring, for comfort and utility. Parkinson's disease, depression, and "weird feeling" while showering.

My mom was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in April, and also has major depressive disorder. She says that showering causes her to feel "unbearably bad" and gets very agitated (wringing her hands and pacing in the bathroom) when she is forced to shower. Does anyone know if this could be related to Parkinson's? It seems like more than the lack of hygiene that sometimes accompanies major depression. [more inside]

Searching for an adult smelling deodorant.

It has been decades since I've worn deodorant. I think I need to start wearing it again for a couple of reasons. All of the deodorants at the drugstore smell to me either cheap, or like something a teenager would wear. Is there somewhere else I should search? Can anyone recommend anything? Roll-on, non-antiperspirant preferred. (Please no salt stone suggestions, they have not worked for me.)

One beard enkemptening, please.

I have a rather unkempt winter beard and I'd like to shape it into an actual (but still thick, long and luxurious) beard. Every time I try to do it myself, I fuck it up. I love my barber, but there's a bit of a language barrier and ever since this little mishap , I'm not yet willing to put my beard back in his hands. So I need some YouTube videos or sites or books or salon manuals or something that will allow me to work on my beard without reinventing the wheel. [more inside]

Keeping a beard respectable

My friend is growing a beautiful bushy beard and moustache. After several months it's wonderfully luxuriant. But, it's got to the stage where he can't eat without spillage. As for soup, forget about it - he can hardly have a mouthful before he has to wield a napkin and wipe spoonfuls away. My friend is very elegant and finds this sloppiness excruciating, especially in public. [more inside]

Best electric pre-shave product?

I'm looking for a lotion, oil, powder, etc. that'll help me get a closer shave with my electric razor. Any experience? While I'm open to less common solutions, I'm optimally looking for something I can just grab at CVS. In the past I've used baby oil which has worked well, but are there any other options (specifically for electric razors or alternative solutions) that might be better? I've seen commercials for Lectric Shave recently and was wondering. Thanks!
