Going to be in South Carolina for cleanup work, where to view debate?

I'm going to Charleston SC with the company I work for on Sunday, knowing that tv and internet can be out due to storm damage, is there any good options for trying to hear the debate? I have a portable AM/FM/SW radio I can bring, do you know of any stations that would be broadcasting it? Barring that any other good options?

Safety question regarding electricity during a hurricane

We recently moved to South Carolina and are on the very edge of hurricane Matthew's path, but are close enough to a marsh that we might be impacted by some flooding. This an older home that has some electrical outlets located on the floor and at the bottom of the walls. At what point should I cut power at the main breaker? The ground floor is 26" above ground and we have no basement. Thank you!

Questions about buying and living in a condo in or near Palm Beach Fla.

The spousal unit and I are sick of Winter weather in the northern US and urgently wish to move to Palm Beach (NOT West Palm Beach). Our initial plan is to move into rental housing for a few months so we can be local while we shop for our new Condo home, but we have some questions about both life in the Palm Beach area and life in multi-unit HOA-run housing. We hope some Mefites with East-Florida-specific experience can provide insights. [more inside]

What smaller, local NYC charities need our support the most in the wake of Hurricane Sandy?

I want to donate more in support of Hurricane Sandy, but I'm concerned that while the Red Cross and the NYC Mayor's Fund are probably getting a ton of love, there are other charities in the city that are in dire straights as a result of the hurricane. (Or just in general.) What smaller, local NYC charities need our support the most?

Landlord Not Providing Habitable Apartment Due To Hurricane -- Still Responsible For Rent?

I’m currently in NY in an apartment without water, sewage, heat or electricity. I’m living elsewhere until my area gets these services back. As I understood it, an apartment without these sorts of things (not to mention the stench of sewage and sea water eating away at the belongings in the floor below and the mold that must be growing there – I think the tenants down there are simply walking away and not cleaning up) is considered uninhabitable. Aren’t renters, by law, not obligated to pay rent until these issues are fixed? [more inside]

Weather in Miami In September

I'll have some free time (a week) after Labor Day (Sept. 1). I really really like Miami Beach; I have been there several times in the winter and once in early July. Will hurricane season make a short trip right after Labor Day this year a nightmare? I don't mind really hot/humid weather I do mind hurricanes... Even if the weather is O.K., will South Beach be dead anyway? I can't go earlier than that, and I can't go later. Personal experiences of Miami Beach in September and good weather resources welcome. Thanks!!!

How do I volunteer for Katrina recovery efforts?

The Red Cross requires a three-week hitch, getting me back two days too late for my calendar. FEMA doesn't want help. I'm told that there are organizations across the country who are looking for volunteers to help with all manner of aid for Katrina victims. I just need a floor to sleep on and three squares, and I'll work 18 hours days feeding dogs or helping people fill out paperwork or cook food or whatever. Can anybody point me to some such organizations?
