My fiancee just got accepted to medical school at UIC (University of Illinois at Chicago), so we're moving there in the next few months. Chicago's a big city, and we need to figure out how to start the apartment search. So...how do we do this? Are there standard questions about our priorities that we can answer in order to narrow down which neighborhood would suit us best? [more inside]
My husband and I are relocating from Philadelphia to Austin. We are headed there this weekend to scope out neighborhoods and get a handle of the city. We plan to move this summer and are interested in hearing about apartment locator services and general tidbits about the city. We are an early 30's couple, no kids, are will both be affiliated with UT Austin. We would like to live in a highrise building downtown or loft close to campus. Have you done this? Do you have building recommendations? This is what we know so far: traffic on I-35 is horrendous, summers are brutally hot, and housing prices are high... but the city is awesome! We want to get excited about the move -- tell us where to set down roots so we can explore the new city!
I was recently told by an acquaintance that he goes "varmint hunting" because he believes this helps keep down the numbers of animal types he feels are overpopulated. Is this legit? Any research that says yay or nay? Does it depend on locale? My impression of him is that he's a jerk who enjoys killing (he even laughed about it) and rationalizes it after the fact, and thus I plan to have nothing further to do with him, but I'm also interested in whether or to what extent his rationalizations have truth in them. I'm trying to remember a poem I read in my British Authors class, which, I believe, was written in the first person (maybe even epistolary). It was about a White British hunter somewhere in Colonial East Africa (I believe it was in Kenya?), and I think he was hunting lions, but also metaphorically it was about love... [more inside]
I often read about how quickly killing animals makes better-tasting meat. Supposedly the fearful state a hunted animal often dies in releases chemicals (adrenaline? bad juju?) that make the meat less wonderful. True or woo? Science me, please!
I'm going to be in Vancouver for about 7-8 months, and I'm hoping to get recommendations for a short stay for the first month. I've checked out airbnb as well as some serviced apartments for the first few weeks but would love to hear any recommendations as those I've found are pretty pricey! [more inside]
I'll be flying out for 7-10 days in June to help my fiance find an apartment for us in the Bay Area, most likely Mountain View-ish. We're hoping for a July 1 lease, although we have enough flexibility to go a few days in either direction. Does it make more sense for me to be there May 29 - June 8 (last weekend of May and first weekend of June) or June 4 - June 15 (first two weekends of June) or some other set of dates? [more inside]

I'm working on a project at work about "unique or unexpected obsessions" related to technology, competition, health and fitness, animals, hunting, gaming or anything that is non-sexual or substance-related. I'm especially interested in how these so-called obsessions/addictions have impacted the subjects' relationships, careers, finances, etc. Where do I find people with weird yet intense obsessions that affect their everyday lives? I feel like I could use some inspiration, so any feedback would be much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

I know this question is big, but would like to glean any useful information for job hunting. I will graduate from my post-graduate study in five months. The time is not abundant for job hunting for a foreigner without citizenship. My study area is agricultural engineering and bio-environmental/bioenergy engineering. Do you know if there is any company that may have positions based on this background? Do you know if there is any suitable website holding ads for this engineering area? Will you be willing to share your experience in job hunting of similar background? Thanks in advance.

With all the rain we have had lately, there are a lot of mushrooms growing in the woods. I started reading about mushroom hunting and some mycologists claim that Chicken Mushrooms are reasonably safe to pick & eat. I recalled that there was an oak tree nearby that had been felled by Hurricane Irene, so I walk out to it and look. Sure enough, what I am fairly certain is a Laetiporus Sulphureus growing from the snapped trunk. [more inside]

How do I find a high-quality hunting trip operator or arranger, for California (preferably in southern California)? I was asked to arrange one for a bachelor party, but haven't the foggiest idea how to find a reputable guide or organizer. I've asked around and googled but with no success. We're looking for a hunt involving a larger animal, but could go smaller or with water fowl depending on the budget. I know there are many who find hunting objectionable (and I'm not exactly a fan, either), but this would mean a lot for the bachelor, and I'd love to make this happen for him. Thanks!
