Jonesing for Sabra hummus

We're obsessed with Sabra hummus and want to buy a big tub of it for a party, but the only place we know to get the big tubs is Costco...and we aren't members (and have no member connections at this time). Does any one know of other SoCal stores that sell the big tubs of it, not the little ones? (They're expensive!)

what was wrong with my hummus

my trader joe's hummus had flakes of something or other in it, which I've never seen before. what could this be? so I just opened up a new container of trader joe's hummus (the plain organic variety, with the green lid), and something about it seemed off. it was almost flavorless, little to no aroma, and more coarse and dry than I remember. after eating some I noticed some very small whitish, translucent flakes that I first thought were flakes of bread, but upon closer inspection were in the hummus. they sort of looked like bits of onion or garlic skin, but a bit thicker. don't recall ever noticing this in TJ's hummus before, so I stopped eating it. can anyone ID this foreign substance? on a whim I googled "chickpea skin" and found this page. I never knew chickpeas had skins, so I'm wondering if the flakes were bits of chickpea skin and maybe my hummus was from a batch that wasn't fully processed (also explaining the coarser texture and specks of solid chickpea).

sorry if this question too trivial to post, but after some googling I found this question about TJ's hummus and sort of freaked out about contamination (my hummus didn't explode though). I called the store and they offered a refund, but hadn't received any similar comments about it.

Hummus goes with what veggie?

I want to find veggies I can dip in hummus instead of chips. Suggestions? I like to snack on hummus and crackers, but I am trying to get healthier this year. I'd like to replace the crackers with some sort of veggie. I tried carrots and did not enjoy the combo.

Can you suggest another veggie (or fruit) that might be a good sub for crackers and allow me to keep up my hummus habit?

Healthy chips and dip?

Healthy chips and dip? Lo, long have I quested thro' the dales and deep, like Bilbo for the One Ring, seeking chips that art not crap for my diet. (That would be “crisps” for you heathen Brits. And yes, I know Tolkien was British.)

Recently I happened upon Snyder's of Hanover sunflower and corn chips. They have a very nice texture but the flavor is meh.

In dip news, I like Middle Eastern food in general. I like حُمُّص بالطحين but besides putting it in falafel I've never found much else to use it with, much less dip in it.

But… Whoso putteth these chips in this dip, shall be the King of the Britons! There's a snacktacular gestalt between these two things, creating a Nietzschean Über-Snack, that I find delicious. And looking at the nutrition facts the combination doesn't look too bad health-wise: no trans fat, not too much fat overall, average carbs and below average sodium for a snack food. Definitely better than potato chips and onion dip, in any case.

So I ask you, me droogy droogs, what sort of healthy chips / crisps do you know of that I could put in my hummus, or healthy dip that I could dip my Hanoverian sunflower chips in, or other healthy combination of chips and dip?

Los Angeles Falafel Filter

Los Angeles Falafel filter: I want good, vegetarian Middle Eastern food up to the Dearborn standard, ideally on the west side of LA (Palms neighborhood), but I'll roam from Culver City to Hollywood (or around Amoeba) to find a great pita place. Further help narrowing it down— the falafel should be spicy, but not over-garlic-ed. It should come with hummus and tabouli, and the tabouli should be fresh and primarily parsley. The falafel sandwich should ideally be wrapped in the pita, not stuffed in a pocket (though pocket is acceptable). The best are the Syrian-style with the fries in the sandwich, and a slather of baba ganoush for good luck.

But let me know if you've found the perfect mujadara or sfouf or halva or even some great baklava.

impress my tastebuds

Fantastic baba ganoush and hummus recipes? What are your favorite recipes for baba ganoush and hummus?

I recently purchased a food processor and have attempted random internet recipes for the two. However, the baba ganoush turned out too overwhelmingly eggplanty; which, I know, is the point but I've had baba ganoush in which the eggplant was counteracted by other ingredients and was much more subtle and enjoyable. The hummus I made was delicious but could have been better.

How can I make these more delicious? More creamy? Better in general? With a special touch?

Why did my food explode?

Why did my hummus explode? I bought hummus last weekend from Trader Joes. Garlic. No preservatives, but the sell-by date was April 11, two days after today. I brought it home and put it in the fridge. It swelled. A lot. So I stuck a knife into the thin plastic covering (the this has not been tampered with stuff) and it exploded (in my sink). Why? I mean, I assume some serious fermenting was going on, but what? And why in this case? I've had hummus a lot longer and never had this happen.

Hummus recipe filter: What’s the most interesting (and delicious) hummus you’ve made? I’m tired of all my variations and in the mood for something new. Recipes that go beyond the usual add-ons (i.e. sun dried tomatoes, roasted garlic, jalapeno, bonnet peppers, etc.) are particularly welcome.
