I had an unexpected emotional reaction to a rape PSA-type video in a meeting today and had to leave a room of about 50 people while trying (and mostly failing) to conceal how upset I was. I’m feeling both drained and embarrassed, and not a little nervous about going in to work tomorrow, and I wanted to get some perspective and advice about what to do next. [more inside]
We've recently started using an online application system at the company I work for and we're trying to set things up fairly so that some hired employees (e.g., in an admin, management, or HR role) can review unsuccessful candidates' and new applicants' files. Are there any protections we should put in place (legally or otherwise) so that new hires or other employees in these privileged roles cannot see the notes on their own applications, the applications and notes of their hiring competition, or applications and notes of fellow new hires? General advice welcome as well, e.g., if there are any potential use cases or other reasons as to why or why not this would be a good idea. We have the ability to fully customise the online application system as we wish. This is in the UK.
I have good reason to believe that our HR manager snooped around on my work computer during off hours, viewing files she had no legit reason to; I have evidence of it, and when I confronted her about it she denied it. [more inside]
I work with a team of people (less than ten) under a supervisor who consistently uses insulting, bullying language and intimidation tactics that are so detrimental to team's morale and productivity that we have decided to take this to our company's anonymous hotline for reporting misconduct. How do we best phrase our concerns/strategize our approach so that the company takes these concerns seriously? [more inside]
Would love to hear feedback from someone familiar with municipal HR practices. Yesterday I interviewed for a position with a city department. The interview was set up by someone from city HR, but was I was actually interviewed by people in the department. At the end of the interview, the contact from HR told me I could not contact the interviewers, but I could direct questions to her (the HR contact). I believe this is all because of various regulations regarding city hiring. When I've been interviewing for other jobs (private companies), I have sent a post-interview "thanks" email to the interviewer. Since I can't contact the people I interviewed with, is it appropriate to send a "thank you for organizing the interview" email to the HR person who has been my point of contact so far?
Had great first interview with partners. Had great second interview with operations manager. During follow-up call with HR, I mentioned that I was also interviewing at other places in a different industry. Did I screw up? [more inside]
For several years Small Company has been undergoing large turnover in employees, to the point that there are now a number of critical vacancies. I am a Widget Controller at SC. Because of the vacancies, I was told to also become a Cog Controller. They're not similar jobs even though they have a similar title and the career path is different. I am not paid extra for the additional role (I haven't asked). There is no overtime. Is a position change like this normal? Is it possible to escalate to HR as this isn't the job I was hired to do? I don't like being a Cog Controller.
It seems like FMLA leave doesn't account for bereavement time. What, then, do I do, after the person I'm caring for (my father) dies- just pack up and immediately fly cross country and go back to work? What about dealing with his estate? [more inside]
Help! My husband is in deep trouble at work for meeting with me on a recent business trip. Although he had the permission of his superiors to meet me, they are still going to hold an investigative hearing, which could result in his demotion, suspension, or even termination. He has offered to provide documentation proving that our meeting was not a flagrant attempt at violating company policy, but his superiors are not interested in seeing it. In spite of his long tenure, it isn't looking too good. What can we do? [more inside]
I have done something very stupid: I thought I had dropped my spouse from my insurance plan during open enrollment, but never double-checked and apparently I did not. Now my HR is telling me I can't remove him until next calendar year, so I have to pay the $3200 difference for the next year. This is in the U.S., as if you can't tell from the effed-upedness of these situations stemming from employer-based healthcare. [more inside]
Our new project leader is making my staff miserable and threatening the professionalism and success of the project itself. Both project and staff are dear to my heart, as well as my professional identity. No one wants to make waves while on the project; I've recently transferred to a different project. Is there anything I can do? [more inside]
I injured myself last fall... by falling. On my head. I now can't do one aspect of my high-stress job (and it's questionable if I can even do my job fully), even after my employer has been more than reasonable with allowing me time to recover. We're usually pretty well-insulated from the attention of our sharp-clawed HR people and very frightening lawyers, but they're involved now. I can read the EEOC website as well as the next person with a skull fracture, but what does this stuff actually mean? [more inside]

When should I (or should I) reveal that my partner is applying for for my old job, given that I now work in a new job in the same institution? Or is the whole thing a bad idea? Managers and HR people, your input would be especially appreciated. [more inside]
I have a feeling that I am going to be laid off at my review next week. Since I suspect that this is coming, I would appreciate any suggestions on what I should say at the review and also, what the next steps I should take are, particularly things that I may not think of or overlook during the somewhat emotional time. Further details on my particular situation inside... [more inside]
I will graduate from college in a week. Two weeks ago, I got an email from an institution that I had done a job interview with saying, "We would like to move forward in the process" and asking to do a background check on me. I filled out the paperwork and faxed it back immediately. They still haven't gotten back to me. (I know my background is clean, as I've passed two other background checks recently.) How good should I feel about my prospects here? Was I wrong in assuming that the background check was a prelude to an employment offer?

Ontario employment law: I'm quitting my job to go back to school full-time in September. I'm currently employed full-time as an engineer. I want to tell my employer as far in advance as possible that I am leaving so that everyone knows what's going on, but I want to minimize the risk of finding myself unemployed and unpaid early. How much notice should I give? [more inside]

At this very moment I am losing sleep over my work situation. My employer has repeatedly asked me to relocate to the home office. I've been putting this decision off for a few reasons until about a month ago. Then discussions were put on hold a couple weeks ago. [more inside]
