How do I know if a company is incompetent or just informal?

When (not?) to ask for a job.

I've prepared a speculative application for a job in Industry in the UK. It has been suggested to me that sending it now would be a mistake since we're heading into the Easter holidays. Is this good advice that I should follow or just a cynical opinion from someone who has nothing at stake? [more inside]

You are not my HR rep but…

I’ve been signed up for classroom style skills training, held in my city. It’s mandatory for people in my salaried position to take it. The course runs 3.5 days, 12 hrs/day and is quite expensive to attend (company paid). Participants are required to stay at a hotel, and are not allowed to commute to the sessions (as they would their regular job). Location: Canada [more inside]

Potential Paths for a 30 Year-Old Career Changer

I'm a 30 year old with a BA in psychology working at a bank and hoping to find a new career. I'm trying to find a career path that will give me a decent living without being a workaholic. I am willing to go back to school, but hopefully not for more than 2 or so years. I am willing to take on some debt, but not a ton. I am considering 1. Human Resources 2. Accounting 3. IT / Something with computers 4. Any other good suggestions. Are any of these a good change for someone my age? I don't want to go back to school only to find out that the field is bad for non 20-somethings. How are prospects for entry-level workers? (I have looked at "official" projections, but would welcome any insider knowledge). Is there anything else that I should consider? [more inside]

Will my husband be fired for this?

Help! My husband is in deep trouble at work for meeting with me on a recent business trip. Although he had the permission of his superiors to meet me, they are still going to hold an investigative hearing, which could result in his demotion, suspension, or even termination. He has offered to provide documentation proving that our meeting was not a flagrant attempt at violating company policy, but his superiors are not interested in seeing it. In spite of his long tenure, it isn't looking too good. What can we do? [more inside]

Drop family members from insurance outside of enrollment period?

I have done something very stupid: I thought I had dropped my spouse from my insurance plan during open enrollment, but never double-checked and apparently I did not. Now my HR is telling me I can't remove him until next calendar year, so I have to pay the $3200 difference for the next year. This is in the U.S., as if you can't tell from the effed-upedness of these situations stemming from employer-based healthcare. [more inside]

Where I work, no one has a PHR/SPHR. What background screening services show someone's salary history?

I found a background check service at one point that showed a summary of each paycheck my employer issued to me, including bonuses and other payments, and I believe my Social Security number was required in order to retrieve the report. YANML: After disability, can't do a single aspect of my job. Help?

I injured myself last fall... by falling. On my head. I now can't do one aspect of my high-stress job (and it's questionable if I can even do my job fully), even after my employer has been more than reasonable with allowing me time to recover. We're usually pretty well-insulated from the attention of our sharp-clawed HR people and very frightening lawyers, but they're involved now. Would law degree enhance HR masters degree?

I am currently a mid-level associate at a prominent New York law firm specializing in benefits and compensation. I am not cut out for working at a big law firm long term and there have not been many alternate opportunities lately that would be satisfying to me (i.e. working at a pension fund, compensation consultant, in-house positions). I enjoy many aspects of my field, but not the law firm lifestyle. I am considering going back to school to get a degree in human resources and am wondering if my JD and background in benefits and compensation law would help me secure a human resources job. Can my job search please be over already?

I will graduate from college in a week. Two weeks ago, I got an email from an institution that I had done a job interview with saying, "We would like to move forward in the process" and asking to do a background check on me. I filled out the paperwork and faxed it back immediately. They still haven't gotten back to me. (I know my background is clean, as I've passed two other background checks recently.) How good should I feel about my prospects here? Was I wrong in assuming that the background check was a prelude to an employment offer?

Giving resignation notice with or without an official offer letter?

I was offered a fantastic new job 3 days ago, and I accepted. They want me to start in 4 weeks, but they haven’t yet given me an official offer letter. The usual advice is to wait for the offer letter before giving notice, right? Well, here's my dilemma: 1) Starting next week, I'm leaving for 3 weeks on my honeymoon. If I wait till next week to give notice, I'll have less than a week left in the office. I work in an extremely small office (4 ppl), and I’ll be putting everyone in a difficult position. 2) I don't want to burn any bridges because I'm using work data for my dissertation. 3) The HR woman at the New Job says I don't need to wait for an offer letter. Should I take her word for it? Should I give notice with or without an offer letter? [more inside]

Does salary requirement have to be in its own document?
