I've been searching Metafilter for humane solutions to our rat problem and, while a couple sound promising (hmmm...so lighter fluid is really ether??), I haven't seen one possibility mentioned: sticking the little bastards in the freezer. I've tried it, and it works great. For some reason, though, my wife isn't too thrilled at the prospect of Brother Rat nestling, even briefly, next to the frozen peas. What do you think? [more inside]

There are a few baby birds on my front porch right now, what should I do with them? Last night there was a torrential downpour and this birds nest was washed down the downspout and my neighbor rescued them from the ground and put them in a safe place on our (shared) porch. I'm looking into trying to find me a decently treated turkey this Turkey day, and Empire Kosher Turkeys have been recommended. Is Kosher Turkey (Empire, for example) any more humane than other relatively big business Turkey? How does one find out how a given meat company treats its animals? [more inside]
