What IDEs / editors do you use for web development?

What IDEs, editors, or general tools do people use to do web development? I'm a linux geek, so my tool of choice is gVim. But I'm teaching a course on this right now and don't want to inflict my prejudices on the students, and I'd like a broader perspective. So if you're a web developer, what do you use? NetBeans, Notepad? Something in-between?

Instructional Design wannabe....

Instructional Designer HTML filter.......
Are there any Instructional Designers/e-learning folks out there that are using HTML daily for their work? I am a student attending a Bachelor of Science progam in Instructional Design. I have just shy of 2 years before I graduate, but I would like to move into some capacity of working in the field before I graduate. I have some experience in creating websites, but would like to get a feel of some of the daily duties that you have in the field. There's seems to be so many technologes that one needs to know and I just wanted to see how much HTML/CSS knowledge that someone works with in an ID role. I am a desktop support analyst now and have been in IT for 10 years so I have a tech background. I just want to get a feel for how much HTML/CSS I should know or if folks in the field rely on Dreamweaver more, etc. Thanks.

Stripping non-alphanumerics in a UTF8 friendly way

My users are likely to enter "oo-11" in a form field when saving data, but search for "oo11" or "o-o11". The hyphen is not important to the data itself. To keep things tidy, I strip the hyphen when saving the data, and strip the hyphen from the search term. I now have a problem with that system. [more inside]

Dear god what is this.

This html/css problem has been driving me crazy: in IE, URLs that are coded: <a href="http://www.ecaa.ee/?">www.ecaa.ee</a> are rendered on screen as 'http://www.ecaa.ee/' but as you can see the http is not in the label. Similarly, mailto: links have the 'mailto:' rendered in front of them even though this only appears in the href attribute. It only happens with the associated stylesheet, not if I view the non-styled html doc in IE. It does not happen in any other browser. [more inside]

Oh, Internet Explorer, how I despise you

Oh, Internet Explorer, how I despise you. I'm de facto webmaster for a small Center at a well-known university. I made a web page that, IMO, looks much nicer than the one we have now. Of course it's not properly displaying in IE, but looks fine in Chrome and Firefox. Any idea what code I need to throw in there to make things render okay in IE? Please please don't say I have to go back to a fixed-width wrapper and absolute positioning. Full disclosure: I'm a librarian, not a web designer. 100% self-taught with the HTML and the CSS and all this nonsense. Don't tell me to hire a web designer, because then I won't have a job. I need to be brought up to date in web development

I have been out of website coding the past seven years. I still have a webiste but it is coded in very simple HTML with little or no CSS. From what I remember back then CSS was not supported fully by all he browsers. Broadband internet was also not as widely used as it is today so I hesitated in using images for my site. Is there a book that will bring me up to date with the latest coding technologies (Ajax, HTML, CSS)?

Why do the rollovers on the website I have made do what I want them to in Chrome but not in Firefox or Internet Explorer?

I have just finished building this website... http://www.frankxcarter.com ...for a friend of mine. In Google Chrome the front page displays with no lines across the photograph and the link images {Journal, Photos, etc.) appear when you roll the mouse over the photograph. However, in Firefox there are thick horizontal white lines across the image and in Internet Explorer the rollovers don't display properly at all! Any advice as to how I can rectify will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Theo
