I need to create a simple portal with links to our own content, which will consist mostly of text documents--hand outs for people who don't speak English as a native language. Should I use a CMS or just build it by hand? [more inside]
The notes (aka comments) on medium.com don't appear to load on firefox, but load correctly in chrome and mobile safari. See these screenshots. Everything else appears to be loading correctly except the 'read next' button in the lower left of the page and the menu button in the top left. [more inside]
On a WordPress site I'd like to add a simple, two-overlapping-circle Venn diagram -- though I'd like the text within to be various links. How would you recommend best implementing this (with a basic to intermediate understanding of HTML and CSS)?
My work computer adds an html tag that I don't want it to add. It happens only on my work computer when I am adding content to a website via a CMS. The text area that I am typing in is - in theory - not supposed to do anything except add plain text. This doesn't happen when I use other computers, just my primary work computer. The tag it adds is: span style="font-size: 14px It is driving me crazy. Any ideas how to stop this span-ness?
Chrome Browser: When I'm in dev mode and have overrides enabled (for example: "iPhone - iOS 6 / 640x980 / Emulate touch events / CSS media: screen"), Chrome throws a black box over the upper left corner of the web page with status in red text (for example: "Overrides: User-Agent / Device Metrics / Touch / Media") It is omnipresent and unnecessary. How do I turn that black box off? [more inside]
I need a pure CSS navigation menu solution for a static, one page application, the simpler the better. [more inside]
I offered to mentor a friend's kids in HTML and I'm looking for teaching tools that would be accessible to elementary-aged children. Free is ideal, but doesn't have to be if it's really excellent. [more inside]
I'm a frontend web developer with quite a long resume. I work full-time but I'd like to pick up some freelance, remote work in my spare time. I'm wondering if there are any places to look besides my personal network, Craigslist, and those awful "Rent-a-coder" sites where you get underbid by overseas folks who'll do it for $9/hr. 1. Highlight section of web page 2. Right-click 3. See selected source code. Firefox does this. Is there an add-on or technique for doing this in Chrome? Windows.
I've got limited HTML and CSS skills, and I'd like to make a Web site that's basically one really, really, really gigantic picture and uses jQuery to jump around from point to point inside it. What's the easiest way to do that? [more inside]
I'm building a website that will offer in-depth player profiles and statistics. I'm looking for a Wordpress theme that lends itself well to this use -- I'm picturing the homepage being a list of teams & players, with each player name linking to his/her individual profile page. Are there any themes, free or paid, that would suit this purpose well? Simple & minimalist themes a plus. [more inside]
I used a HTML typography package years ago and can find neither hide nor hair of it any more. It converted HTML to include proper dashes, curly quotes and other typographic elements. It may have been a blogging engine (or included with one). What was it? [more inside]
I have an interesting file syncing problem. As part of my responsibilities, I have to keep track of changes in the US export regulations. The Dept. of Commerce makes the regulations available in two formats, HTML and PDF. The HTML versions are oddly formatted so I prefer the PDF versions even if they are harder to search. They're available in PDF on this page. I have been regularly going out to the page and downloading relevant documents that have changed but I'd like to automate this if I can. But there are some gotchas. [more inside]
How would you build a website where people can have an anonymous Q&A discussion with you? [more inside]
Why do my spaces disappear after I close an italics tag in HTML? I write blog posts that get published on a custom CMS that works more or less like Moveable Type, WordPress, or TypePad: You can type in a box and then use the interface's buttons to bold, italicize, or make links, or you can paste in your own HTML-coded text. I like to type up my posts with my own code, meaning I type the <whatever> </whatever> in with my prose. This works great, except I sometimes lose a space after closing an italics tag, even though it's typed in correctly. For the life of me I cannot figure out why the CMS seems to eat those spaces. I use em, not i, if that matters. [more inside]
I am looking for a method of displaying a list item's parent number in a list with nested sublists, in the way sections of a document would be displayed. Example:
... 8. Defining Custom Counter Styles: the ‘@counter-style’ rule 8.1. Counter algorithms: the ‘type’ descriptor 8.1.1. repeating 8.1.2. numeric ...I'd like to use only the ol and li tags and CSS styling, but HTML lists will only display the number of the current node. Thoughts? [more inside]
I have a lot of images for a card game I'm working on. I want to put them on a single web page in printable form. Automatically, if possible - there are a LOT of images. (They're all in one directory, though.) Bonus points if the size of the images can be easily rescaled so they can fit the sizes of cards from other games (so they can be sleeved together, for instance.)
I have a large graphic (say, 20 screens' worth, vertically scrolling) that is full of text that needs the image to be viewed at full size to read. When putting this on a website, I'd like much of this text on the image to be clickable, i.e. linked. I'd prefer not to use the HTML map tag or Flash, and I'm no coder. Is there a web service that could make this easier? [more inside]
I have recently taken charge of an old webpage that is a bit out of date on a university server. I am primarily familiar with Google Sites and Wordpress, where there's a CMS editor, but here it's just an ftp site with raw index files that require Spry to run. What do I need to edit it? Would it be relatively easy to create a redirect to a site that I control running a CMS I understand? How do I keep that from ruining all the old backlinks?
I use Dolphin as my default browser on my Samsung Galaxy S3. I've just noticed that italics don't show up in Dolphin. (Screenshot.) They do show up in the stock browser. (Screenshot.) I can't find a setting anywhere that indicates why the <em> tag isn't showing. Help? Here's the about screen for my phone, and for Dolphin, if those are helpful.
Help me turn a photo essay, currently in HTML, into a PDF (without big ugly white space when photos break to the following page). [more inside]
I have webspace and a domain which is currently hosting a Wordpress blog -- an instance of WP running on the server, not a redirect -- on it that I haven't updated in a year. I want to use the domain to showcase my projects, past and present, and one of these projects is the current main blog. So I have a few logistics questions below the fold. [more inside]
Tumblr recently switched out their flash-based music player with a new, more mobile-friendly one. That's good, except the new one is devastatingly ugly and has totally different proportions. I'm not even sure it's displaying correctly - the arrow is off-center, the text looks wonky. I have been trying in vain to find ways of fiddling with its attributes, but the ones exposed are very limited. Has anyone else noticed this problem with the look, and has anyone had any success in customizing it? [more inside]
I'm scheduled for a technical interview after the weekend for a front-end development position. I'd like to spend some intensive time beforehand reading relevant blogs and books to prime the ol' noodle and supplement my existing knowledge. Could you recommend some resources? Are there questions you would ask an applicant in this situation, or that you have been asked? [more inside]
Someone with a simple .HTML/.PHP page and no content management system needs me to put up a "Contact Us" form. In the old days there were a lot of PHP scripts to do this, but I can't tell if any of them are still reliable and secure. Are there any recommendations for one? I'm familiar with all the great ones for Wordpress (Gravity Forms, Contact Form 7) but unfortunately can't use those because this site has no database. [more inside]
On Android, is there a way in any of the available browsers to turn off honoring <meta name = "viewport" content = "initial-scale = x.x, user-scalable = no">? I'm sick of designers that don't want me to zoom in on their preciously designed mobile site.
I've noticed that when I click around the popular Daring Fireball site, there's a brief whitescreen flash in between pages... i.e., the entire browser window turns white for just a moment before the next page loads. Anyone know why? [more inside]
I’m currently working on an international project and need to format documents written in German, Polish and Croatian for use on the web. What is the quickest way to convert all the non-ASCII characters into the relevant character entity? Some sort of web form would be my ideal solution, but I’d settle for a freeware program.
I want to create an intra-company website for my co-workers to rate/review widgets. It will not be a commercial venture. Is there is a free or free-ish way to do this? [more inside]
Work has had me start building responsive html emails to send to our member list with Facebook share links inside. I know you can open links to iOS native apps from emails and websites within the iOS environment, but is it possible to have those "share to your wall" links work correctly? I've googled around a bit, but not having any luck finding a clear answer.

I'd like to make attractive html tables (and various kinds of graphs, charts, etc) for a wordpress blog, but I don't think like a programmer. Is there a program where I can manipulate the design elements like pictures instead of code? And then plug the information into the table cells and grab the code when it all looks like what I want?
I occasionally contribute tutorials to open source projects and I'm looking for a standard Web page template I can use for these. Although I know HTML/CSS and could write one from scratch, I'd rather spend that time writing more (or better) documentation for the projects. Do you know of any simple, nice looking, open source templates I could use? [more inside]

Help me get my Web 2.x (or are we on 3.x now? I've lost track) on. I'm an old-school Web 1.0 developer who wants to kickstart himself into slightly more modern UI and user experience paradigms, and I have a project in mind (of course). The challenge? No expensive tools. [more inside]

I posted this question a few months back but would like to... ask again with a little more details. I bit the bullet and signed up for classes again, and after my first half day back, I'm now at home having a panic attack regarding my decision. I'm a historic preservation graduate student, and after a whole year of freaking out about what I want in life, all I really want is a job that pays well, or an incredibly marketable skill. I doubt I will get either with this degree. [more inside]
