When my website (http://www.shalom-bayit.com/index.php) is displayed in IE, the sidebar is broken. It appears below the document no matter what width I set. However in Firefox it displays like it should. I am thinking it has to do with the doctype declaration. This problem only existed when I added php code into the page and renamed it to a php file, thus having to change the doctype to transitional. Why does IE interpret transitional pages different than Firefox? Any ideas on why this happens, and what can be done to correct it?

XPATH hell-I'm trying to XPATH out the (xml) contents of the processVXMLReturn tag in
this document. The file contains the exact XML response from a web service; I have no control over the output. I'm just interested in the nested xml payload. Hope my terminology is correct.[M to the Izzay]

Is there any central authority or archive for XML DTDs and Schemas? I am thinking of developing an *ML, and would like to know if similar work has already been done, if there are any naming conventions, etc.

Library/information science question(s): My code-fearful friend succeeded in getting through library school without exposure to more than basic HTML. I now have him on a diet of Dreamweaver and XHTML, with a sprinkling of GoLive. He's wondering about next steps: for someone who wants to be well-equipped to work in an academic, medical, legal, or similar library or archive (with web development as part of his job, rather than the focus of it), what scripting language(s) and/or content-management systems are most important to learn? Is the library world fragmented in this regard, or is there a dominant technology? What would be a logical entry vector into this world for someone without a comp-sci bone in his body (in terms of languages/systems, and specific learning resources)?
