How to continue using an almost new laptop

I have an Acer laptop with an i3 chip and the standard amount of RAM, probably 4GB that I bought in 2011. Just over a year after I bought it, and just weeks after the end of warranty, the hard drive died. I'm wondering how hard it would be to buy a new hard drive and install Ubuntu or something like that. Is it possible? If so, how much of a pain is it to set up drivers? Would I have to manually install drivers for nearly everything (USB ports, wireless receiver, etc)?

I get the big picture, now how do I break it down?

I love the whole Linux idea from start to finish. I've been using it for a year now, full time, and I want to go deeper. How do I contribute? [more inside]

Any linux with good (easy) wireless support?

Linux noob Filter: Is there a linux with REAL good wireless support (integrated Broadcom) and either Enlightenment or KDE as the defalt desktop? I _REALLY_ wanna get into Linux, but it's hard without a wireless connection. [more inside]

Online Photo Albums

What software do you guys use for online photo albums? I've just gotten a new digital camera and I'd like something that, ideally, can take all the photos I have in a given directory and throw them up on the web in an album. It would be even better if I can add captions and allow comments. We are running Linux at home, and I'm looking for something easy -- I'm no programming goddess. Thanks!
