My boyfriend is having a housewarming party about a month from now, and I thought of a really fun idea for some wall art. I know some shops on Etsy take commissions, but for my own curiosity, I'd really like to know about the steps, tips/tricks, and overall process that I, as mostly tech-literate but otherwise digital-art-making-and-printing layperson, might take to create a solo or very limited run digital art print that I can frame and give as a gift. Bajillions more questions inside. [more inside]
Because of the nature of our wedding venue, I will be going solo on my wedding hair and makeup. Fortunately, I have loads of time to practice. Unfortunately, given my current skill and knowledge level, an eternity may not afford enough practice time to get me where I need to be. What are the best resources for the absolute beginner to learn techniques and how-tos for wedding hair and makeup? [more inside]
My Halloween costume is just a regular old undead sort of demon: black eyes, horns, and a very white face. My intent is to have a scary pale, almost paper-white visage, but I want it to look less thick/flat and more 'natural' than standard clown grease paint. I have no makeup application experience whatsoever. Can you help me figure it out? [more inside]
When I was in Monterey I had a tex-mex migas like I'd never seen and I've always wanted to recreate it at home. it was the traditional tex-mex migas ingredients (tomato, bell pepper, onion, egg, cheese, tortilla chips) but it came out standing whole and firm, not unlike a flan and it cut like one - moist but really sturdy, not falling apart, almost like a quiche? The non-egg stuff was diced superfine and just melted into it. How did they make this and how can I do it at home? [more inside]
Partner and I are interested in meditation and mindfulness. I am a Christian and partner is an atheist. There are a lot of resources on atheist meditation and a lot on Christian meditation. I am put off by the anti-religious content of the former, and partner is put off by the religious aspects of the latter. Can you suggest any books/podcasts/websites/etc. that are neutral on religion, and are just about how to meditate? [more inside]

The stock answer to everyone who's posted an Ask about being stressed or anxious lately has been "Mindfulness! Meditation!" But, um, what does that mean, exactly? Please share anecdotes, techniques, references. What - exactly - did you do, and how did it help? Walk me through this like I'm five. [more inside]
This recent post about picking a sewing machine has inspired me: I followed advice similar to this answer and bought a newly reconditioned sturdy metal Singer 301A a couple of years ago. I acquired a buttonholer and zigzag attachment, as well as a box of other theoretically useful sewing feet (I will be able to sew ruffles just like in Dick and Jane readers!). [more inside]
I am teaching a First-Year Composition course and we're heading into a unit in which students will write a "how to" or process essay. I'm looking for recommendations for readings that might go along with this unit. What readings can you recommend -- either essays, articles, or short fiction -- that are "how to"/process essays, or that use this format? [more inside]

A while ago I was gifted a few shares of AAPL stock. They were – and still are – on paper certificates. I don't have a brokerage or anything. Today that stock split 7-for-1. Do I need to do anything now? You can assume I know pretty much nothing about this stuff. Thank you!
I have bought the most expensive, most organic and local and mollycoddled pork chops in my life. I do not want to waste this experience. Please tell me how to make the perfect pan-fried pork chop in agonizing detail. I own cast iron pans and I'm going to serve it with asparagus - that's the only limitation. Otherwise anything goes. Teach me the wisdom of Pork Chopery.
Teach me how to garden. We are in Zone 7 in Southern US with one plot that gets full sun and another that gets partial sun. Our flowers keep dying or being eaten by deer. Help. [more inside]
I have a TV hooked up to an antenna. I get all the network broadcast channels in HD. Sometimes, I would like to record some shows/sports that I'm not around to watch live. In way olden times I would buy a VCR, hook it up to my TV, set the timer, and everything would be hunky dory. But DVRs have me befuddled. Do you have a recommendation for a DVR without a subscription (what exactly are you subscribing to) that can work with an antenna? [more inside]

I've got an idea for a website I'd like to do - I want to create, together with my website visitors, a sort of "choose your own adventure." I would set up the story up to a point, then the people who visit the site could come up with ideas as to which way the story would go. The top three up voted choices become the next part of the adventure, which I then flesh out. I would update once a week; this just sprung into my head, and it sounds like a cool creative project for me to do. I also have a talented artist that would like to contribute. Unfortunately, I have no experience in web site design, and am lost as how to begin. Please help me learn how to design a website so I could set up this kind of project! Details inside. [more inside]
I know I'd be an excellent fit and have similar experience to the job listing. I've worked for the experiential marketing company through which they're recruiting for and I did really well on my first program, earning two top incentives and a really good starting reputation with the company. Can you help me get this position by taking a look at my relevant experience and helping me frame it in an appealing, successful way? Can you give me tips on how to stand out from the thousands of applicants? Is anything about the way I've written my experience confusing/bland (other than the intentional vague-ening of the details, of course)? Please help me! Thanks so much. [more inside]
I just turned 21, and believe it or not, I have done very little drinking of alcohol until now. However there is now a plethora of choice I am newly privvy to, and I am interested in trying some things out. But I would like some advice. [more inside]
I've been googling and googling different ways to make rings, but I can't find precisely what I'm looking for. I have an image that I'd like to use to make a ring with a simple band. I want to know how to treat/preserve/protect the image so I can wear it frequently and also how to turn it into a ring. A plain wire-type band is fine with me. Adjustable size is ideal, but a fixed one would work too. Does anybody either know how to do this or know of a resource that would be helpful? I think this is enough information, but feel free to ask if you have other questions. Thank you!
So, I was gifted some fabulous fabric, enough for a fabulous fashion corset. Never made one, thus I am looking for suggestions for good patterns, excellent kits, books and other resources. I am a reasonably skilled intermediate sewist, with a good machine, near some excellent local shops. I fully intend to practice on less-loved fabric first. I'm not looking for period accuracy or significant waist reduction, but I am looking to make something more corsetlike than a lightly-boned princess bodice. More steampunk outerwear than Victoria Secret underwear. Most likely I'll pick an underbust as it's intended as an over-my-clothes fashion thing. [more inside]
I have to write several instructions manuals with screenshots. (Step-by-step documentation.) What's the easiest way to do this? Any hacks or software recommendations? I want it to look nice and be easy to make. I don't have access to Photoshop or Illustration; free or very low cost would be ideal.

I have never had an allergic reaction before so I don't know what to do. I just had hives that lasted for 2 weeks. I went to the doctor and they gave me some shots and it was gone in a day, but it came back the second week - I kept taking my meds so the hives are mostly gone now. Some spots were still kind of itchy but its mostly just dark marks on my face. I was wondering if anybody knows how to remove these dark spots on my face because I really feel uncomfortable looking at the mirror and seeing myself like I'm looking at a moon. [more inside]

I have hardwood flooring. Part of it got messed up by dye leaking into it, another part seems to have dark stains that I think may have been caused by drink spillage. I need to fix it ASAP. Are these things I can fix myself easily, or should I call a contractor? And if I do, what type of contractor/which one should I call? [more inside]
Completely clueless here. Been with my partner since 2000, we married each other in our living room in 2005 & had a bash afterwards with close friends. Now that we get Federal tax benefits, we're looking to take the plunge. Except we have no idea what the logistics are. [more inside]
Boston-area Mefites: share your wisdom! We are looking to furnish our Medford, MA, apartment. We'd like to shop at Ikea. The problem is, we don't drive (we aren't legally qualified, so Zipcar doesn't help). Ikea will deliver from the store, which is great but leaves one problem: How do we get to and from the store? Any advice helpful; more details inside. [more inside]

I really need to block someone on Instagram. This person headed this off by blocking me first, which I am told means they can still look through all the pictures I post. I need for them to not be able to do this. I can't search usernames to block them because their username doesn't exist anymore for people they have blocked (like me), but I need to block them, and this functionality of "can't block anyone who blocked you" seems kind of dangerous. I must be mistaken?
While travelling abroad, I'm seeing a lot of younger people wearing their backpacks on their chests. Ignoring those few burdened with two backpacks, fore and aft, I'm perplexed -- why would anybody do that? It makes about as much sense to me as wearing your pants backwards. Aren't the straps all wrong, doesn't it slip down your arms, and at the most inopportune moment? [more inside]

I have an Acer laptop with an i3 chip and the standard amount of RAM, probably 4GB that I bought in 2011. Just over a year after I bought it, and just weeks after the end of warranty, the hard drive died. I'm wondering how hard it would be to buy a new hard drive and install Ubuntu or something like that. Is it possible? If so, how much of a pain is it to set up drivers? Would I have to manually install drivers for nearly everything (USB ports, wireless receiver, etc)?

how to find trustworthy and high quality tradesmen in England? In Particular in or close to Cambridgeshire UK. I've seen a few sites that purport to offer crowdsource reviews of tradesmen but they have a small number of tradesman and few if any reviews which means I can't place too much weight on them. Something like tripadvisor would be awesome as from experience I know that there are so many untrustworthy people doing these jobs.
