Please help me be ok with the prospect of being a life-long renter.

Through a series of unfortunate events and choices, I've reached middle age without being able to purchase a house (I'm single, if it matters). It looks like my financial situation won't change in the forseeable future and I'm carrying a significant load of personal debt. [more inside]

Short-term housing in San Francisco

I'm considering attending a six-month web development bootcamp in San Francisco that runs from October to April, and I'm wondering what I can expect to pay for housing. I'm interested in learning both about cheaper arrangements like SROs in Chinatown and housing oriented towards students, as well as about what it might cost to get a room in a "normal" multi-bedroom apartment for that period. Mefites of New York: Where should I live in NYC?

So, I'm moving to New York, and the housing situation looks really complicated. I have a friend I can crash with for a week or two, but I would ideally like to find a place soon after I arrive in the city in early August. I have no idea which areas I should be looking in, or what's reasonable for my budget. [more inside]

Should I tell a prospective landlord that I'm pregnant?

I'm pregnant, so my husband and I are looking for a larger place to live. We found a great house, where the landlord lives in a separate basement MIL unit in the house. Should I conceal that I'm pregnant (doable depending on what I wear) in case concerns about screaming babies might convince him not to rent to us? Or should I tell him up-front, since living in the same house as a landlord who doesn't want you there could be uncomfortable and stressful? [more inside]

Can I afford to take out a mortgage?

I make about $46,000 in Seattle, WA. Monthly take-home pay, excluding overtime which automatically goes into a savings account, is $2,800. I have no debts and no significant non-optional recurring expenses. At some point in the next few months, I will have about $150,000 in cash after splitting the equity in a home that is being sold. Assuming that I can put that amount toward a down payment, can I afford a mortgage? Before I contact my lender, is it even wise for me to take one out? I've been looking at a few suitable homes in North Seattle priced at or below $275,000. [more inside]

UK - Inherited a property with development potential. How to sell?

I have recently inherited half of a property that has development potential and am looking for some advice on what to do next. Prior to this inheritance I have never owned a home or even managed to save a small deposit for a mortgage, so I have absolutely no experience of the property market. If all goes well, selling the property could set me and my fellow beneficiary up for life - we each hope to use our shares to buy our own homes mortgage-free! This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for me and I'm anxious to get the best possible price for the sale! [more inside]

Being overcharged in an illegal sublet in a rent-controlled apartment. No lease. What do?

I've been living in a month-to-month, no-lease sublet in Manhattan since January. I just found out that' it's a NYCHA rent-controlled apartment, and i'm paying way more than my 'share' of the monthly rent (also, i'm pretty sure subletting a rent-controlled apartment is illegal.) Clearly i'm going to be moving out ASAP. What else should I do? Do I have grounds for financial recoupment? [more inside]
