I am moving to DC this fall to work in biglaw. The pay is high, but so are my student loans, which I would like to pay off ahead of schedule. Where should I live? Snowflakes within.

I'm having trouble mashing up neighborhood recommendations, apartment listings, and public transportation maps. Could you advise me on places to rent way outside of the main University of Maryland campus/DC area (e.g. no Silver Spring!) that still let me commute into campus via less than 2 hour public transportation?

(Passed on from an ESL teacher friend of mine, who got the question from one of her students...)
A group of Chinese businessmen will be coming to DC to study at Georgetown. Their company is arranging accommodation on Michigan Ave. NE, and they're 1) worried about safety, and 2) wondering what the area is like.

(Posting for a friend, on behalf of their friend, all three of us equally un-D.C. savvy:)
A friend of mine is thinking about renting in an apartment in Washington DC, near P St NW and 4th St NW. Based on some internet research, it looks like this is the Truxton Circle or Shaw neighborhood, but we're not quite sure about that. She's a single white female in her mid-twenties, and will be a student keeping irregular hours. She has a car, and has lived in major cities before, though always in relatively safe areas. How safe is this neighborhood? What is the crime situation like? Will she be comfortable walking around alone at night?

I'm looking for short-term housing in DC for May, June, and July. I've seen
this great thread, but I'm wondering if there have been any updates since then or if there are summer-specific options.

I am looking for a place to stay in or near Washington DC - I need to move in by November 1. I have found a place which I could stay for a few months (month-to-month rent) but until I could find something that more closely fits my preferences. Should I go with this place now before it is gone, or should I try to find a place I would be comfortable with long-term within the next week and a half?

Should I avoid signing a year-long lease for a room in a group house or shared apartment? Is it reasonable to hold out for month-to-month rent, or will I end up with slim pickings? (I am looking in the DC area)

I have a friend who arrives in DC next weekend for a 9-month fellowship. Problem is, she just learned her housing isn't available until late September. Can you recommend any budget-friendly week-to-week or month-to-month housing arrangements in the DC metro area?

Is it feasible to rent an apartment out for a short time? Like 1-3 weeks? I will be traveling during this summer, am in a high rent area (DC) and was pondering if that was a possibility.

HousingFilter: I'm desperately seeking to sublet/rent a room in the D.C. area, where I'll be
interning from June 14th through August 6th. I've hit up Craig's List, Roll Call, The Hill, Roomates.com, Sabbaticalhomes.com, and the Weekly Paper. I've tried the various universities, but I don't relish the idea of sharing a bunk bed. Anyone got any other bright ideas about where I might look on such short notice without actually having to be in D.C.? Barring that, anyone got a room for rent that's even slightly accessible to Dupont Circle?
