I'm now working near Navy Yard in Southeast DC, and the extended commute from Northern Virginia is wearing thin on me. Outside of the area immediately near my office, I know nothing about what's going on in Southeast DC and Maryland. What neighborhoods should I be looking at? [more inside]
I am currently searching for housing on Craigslist and have found some really good places and gotten good responses from them. The one thing that determined whether people responded was if I reached them on their cell phone or could text them. Those who permitted you to contact them via the craigslist-coded email almost never responded [more inside]
A friend of mine is moving from Israel to London on the 28th of August. Their living arrangement just fell through, and as well as getting in touch with people they already know in London, they are looking for resources to find short-term rental housing there. They are looking for temporary accommodation for one to two weeks while trying to find a more permanent arrangement. What resources (preferably online) are available for finding a room for a short-term rental?
I'm considering relocating to Seattle from the Midwest for a new job but am very concerned about affordable housing. Looking for a house or apartment rental within an hour's distance via public transit, if possible. Would like to spend between $1,000 and $1,500 if possible. Can go a bit higher. Would like a lot of space -- ideally, 1000 square feet. This would be for my wife, myself and our dog. Any advice about where I should be looking would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I've never visited Amsterdam, but this week I accepted a permanent job there, and am planning to start on August 10th. I'm incredibly excited but also terrified and a little clueless, mostly because I don't have housing sorted, and I don't have a lot in savings to manage a relocation. How can I make this move as painless as possible? [more inside]
I am attempting to figure out what it will take to drop the PMI from my mortgage payment and, wow, the internet is really leading me on all sorts of wild goose chases in attempting to figure out what the actual criteria are. Loan details within. [more inside]
I was informally evicted from a lease in the past year. I skipped it in my rental history on a new application. Now what? [more inside]
I have been reading some articles about housing costs in the U.S. and I'm interested in learning why – historically, culturally, economically, or otherwise – Americans spend a larger portion of their incomes on housing compared to other developed nations. [more inside]
Apartment hunting in Brooklyn moves a mile a minute and we have a quick decision to make. There's a good apartment in park slope. We love the idea of it but there's one weird thing: there's a "bump" in the ceiling. The ceiling is sort of tiled, and the area under the light fixture buckles down into a ~meter wide contact lens-like shape. It's odd, and the landlord doesn't plan to "fix" it because he says there's no problem. There's no sign of mold or leaking there or anywhere else in the apartment for that matter. Questions: 1) What concerns should we have and 2) should we sign a lease? For those who don't know NY housing hunts, if you don't decide, someone else will and then you're back to square 1, so hoping folks can weigh in with everything we should be thinking about! (and I don't know how to post a picture, but will if someone tells me how!)
I'm moving to New Orleans for a one-year masters program and need an apartment starting this August. I've never been there and can't visit before moving. Please help me find a place to live! [more inside]
There is a possibility I may be getting a job that would require a relocation to Atlanta. Can you help recommend a community or neighborhood? Details inside. [more inside]
I'm moving to Portland, OR and looking for low-income housing, as I am on SSDI. Not just talking about Section 8 but all income-restricted apartments. Many have waiting lists of around 2 years or more--are there any that may have shorter lists? Plus I'm not sure if there are certain mgmt companies to avoid. Also, is there some sort of tenant center that would be a good resource? I am looking for a 1 BR but a studio is also fine.
My mother, aged 73, would like to move from NYC to near us in the Boston 'burbs to be closer to us and our little daughter (though not moving in with us). She's lived in NYC for 45 years, so wherever she moves would be a big transition. I'd be grateful for any resources, tips, and experiences for helping aging parents with a similar move. [more inside]
Please tell me the latest possible date I should fly into San Francisco to look for housing, with a work start date of August 10th. More specifics within. [more inside]
I live in a house that's broken up into two units, with a shared basement where everybody does laundry. I went down to do the laundry this afternoon and found that I was locked out of my portion of the unit (normally the door to the basement is unlocked). The oven was also on because I was cooking. I had no phone and no keys, so I went outside and banged on the door and shouted 'HELP!' Nobody was home to answer, for either unit. I went back into the basement and it turned out that the people downstairs still had their door unlocked. I walked through the downstairs unit to get back into the common entrance to get back into my unit. Is this trespassing if it was an emergency? As I said before, the oven was on, and there was no telling when people would get home and I didn't want a fire to start and put everybody at risk. Otherwise I would've just waited or tried to find another neighbour so I could get in touch with the landlord or a housemate. Nobody knows this happened, but I'm not sure whether I should mention it or not.
Hi all! I live in a 10-person "communal" house in NYC, and about 5-6 of my roommates are on the lease. I have lived here for 5 months. The lease is being renewed in July and my roommate have let me know that they have renewed the lease as a 9-person house and that they want me to move out in July. They are a communal house and I am kind of the extra person that they hoped would buy into their community model, but I am technically just renting a room. I think my room is illegal because it has no window, but previously the landlord wanted it filled. Is there anything I can do to keep my room? Is it legal for them to oust me due to not filling their expectations?

My ex and I are trying to figure out how to transfer the house to her without me losing all of my equity. Unfortunately, she can't afford to just buy me out, and can't qualify for a new mortgage on the remaining loan balance if she's got a loan to me as well. I'm looking for recommendations on finding a lawyer to help vet a legal agreement, and any specific legal methods for making this happen. This is in Denver, Colorado. [more inside]
I was looking at a house. The disclosure said there was a crack in the foundation (link to pic of the disclosure inside). Realtor 1 said it was $5k to repair. Realtor 2 said it was $100k to repair. The house was sold already - but I'm trying to figure out who to trust. How would I go about this? [more inside]

After lots and lots of changes is my life, due to medical reasons I find myself making concrete plans a year in advance again. Help me find a place where life will be enjoyable for me. [more inside]
The lease on my house begins in August. The property management company has issued repeated emails last month -- and then last week a demand in writing -- that I renew the lease immediately (mid-March). Can they do this, or is it a bluff? The problem is that rental properties in this area come on the market May - July, so if they coerce a signature out of me now, I can't effectively search for other housing. [more inside]
Looking for short term housing from June to August. Family two with pets. Husband has an internship. Were hoping for furnished studio or one bedroom would be fine. Nothing fancy needed. In Plainsboro or a neighboring town. Any leads or advice in finding them would be helpful. Already posted want ads on Craigslist
My old student neighborhood in southern California has several new luxury apartment buildings marketed toward students, which rent apartments with "by the bed" leases instead of normal per-apartment-unit leases. This setup is intended for single students, and it seems complicated, impractical, and overly expensive to rent if you're a couple and/or have children. Familial status is a protected class under the US Fair Housing Act. Has anyone challenged housing providers who do this? What could happen if somebody challenged them? [more inside]
We've been renting out our house (which we own) as an AirBnB apartment, and for more than a year things have been going really well. Recently, however, a break-in prompted AirBnB to cancel a long-term booking, stiffing us on the last month's rent with no notice. [more inside]
I just started a new job... as did my wife! We love our sleepy small town but my new commute is pretty killer, so I'm tentatively looking for someplace new to live. Any suggestions? Criteria below the fold. [more inside]

My boyfriend and I want to rent an apartment in Geneva. We found a place that looks promising, but the whole thing seems kind of fishy. Can you please help us figure out if this is a scam or not? [more inside]
not sure if this is the case in other areas, but where i live there are zillions of one-bedroom duplexes built in the 1920s. why the sudden duplex housing boom in the 20s? and why are they all single bedrooms - were they meant for singles or couples without kids? i've googled and googled and can't find the answer, so hopefully one of y'all knows!
After a promising-looking month, my financial situation has tanked. I'm in my last night in the place I've been living (a weekly motel) and I'm not sure where I'll be this time tomorrow. I'm looking for advice as to emergency housing for one person in the Dallas area. [more inside]
I'm currently living in an illegal housing assn. sublet (UK), and I'm moving soon. When do I tell the authorities about it? I want to do it because it just seems wrong for it to be occupied by people who don't necessarily need it when there's a queue of folk who do. But I want to cover my back. But I don't want to screw over the next lot of tenants. What would you do? [more inside]
So what I'm looking for is any national statistics (or as close as I can get) on the area of building unpermitted additions on housing. As in guy buys a home. Guy moves in and discover that third bedroom he built is unpermitted. Or that connected treehouse. Or the homemade bomb shelter. thoughts on where I could find such things?
My eldest will be heading off to Portland this summer, with plans of attending the Paul Mitchell School downtown. I'm trying to get a sense of what our housing options are, so I can budget and she can plan (she really likes things to be planned out). My ideal would be something as dorm-like as possible-in the sense that there are staff onsite, or available much of the time, other students around, and perhaps some of the extra costs are already rolled into your rent (utilities, internet, etc). I'm moving house! (Again.) Excitingly, this is going to be my house, and not a landlord's house. This should be my last move for a while! I'm fairly well-versed in moving, having done it four times in the past three years, but this move is a little different: I'm only moving a few metres down the road. [more inside]

Is there such a thing as too much light in a living space? I'm looking for a new apartment. One possibility is a large studio in a high rise tower (30th floor) with floor-to-ceiling west-facing, unobstructed windows. This is in the Northeastern section of the US (an area known for hot and humid summers). The property developers have not included cellular shades, only standard mini blinds. It is lovely now in the winter and makes the apartment seem large and cheerful, but will I regret signing a lease come July?
