So it occurs to me that my entire household is supported by two jobs vulnerable to automation. How long do we have, in your opinion? What steps can we take to make sure we don't end up begging in the street? [more inside]

My partner and I are getting ready to move to Madison in June. We are thinking that we might need some help locating a rental. Does anyone know a good real estate agent who works as a rental agent or apartment locator? We would love to find a flat, duplex, or small house, but failing that an apartment would be fine too. My mental and physical illnesses severely interfere with my ability to keep up with housework. This has been a big problem with landlords in the past. In another thread, someone here suggested asking for a reasonable accommodation of hiring someone to clean on a regular basis. I’d like to do that, but I don’t know at what point I ask for that accommodation or how I ask. I’ve included some specific questions inside. [more inside]
Can you think of any songs with lyrics about living in (or growing up in) poor-quality housing or subsidized housing? Any genre. I can think of Jay-Z ("I was raised in the projects, roaches and rats") and Notorious B.I.G. ("No more public housing/Thinking back on my one-room shack...We used to fuss when the landlord dissed us/No heat").

I'm considering renting out a room in our apartment. The income would allow my ex-husband and me to finally separate after our "temporary" arrangement of the last 6 years which followed 9 years of separation. I'm desperate! But I'm not sure if we are likely to find someone to rent, given some drawbacks to the situation. [more inside]

Trying to find an apartment in the Boston area is pretty tough. I search Craigslist and PadMapper for rental listings once a day at least. Looking for recommendations for a lawyer experienced with Oakland's just cause evictions. Our landlords are pursuing an owner move-in in our rent-controlled apartment, which we believe is most likely not in good faith. We would like to get legal advice on our options. [more inside]

Last year my wife and I jacked in our jobs, sold our apartment and travelled the country for a while. We were expecting to refine our ideas as to what we would do next, but instead - we found out we were having a baby. Cut to now and we realised we had to cut our trip short, came back to my folks place 'temporarily' and the baby has just been born. We're all consumed by the baby and ecstatic that he is here, but we're now worried about what we do next. An opportunity has presented itself that could be really interesting for us, but doesn't pay and is a leap into the unknown. We don't know what to do. More inside... [more inside]

I've moved towns seven times in three years and I'm tired of it! I'd like to settle down in a place, make a life there - build a community, make friends, form relationships, get involved in things and become a genuine part of a community rather than just a transient person moving from town to town because of an overheated, insecure housing market. I'm currently based in the UK and looking at the UK and the rest of the EU only. [more inside]

I am moving from California to New York for a job that starts on September 15th. Is there a reasonable way to remotely find a studio/1 bedroom or move in with a roommate starting September 1st? I am currently searching for housing on Craigslist and have found some really good places and gotten good responses from them. A friend of mine is moving from Israel to London on the 28th of August. Their living arrangement just fell through, and as well as getting in touch with people they already know in London, they are looking for resources to find short-term rental housing there. They are looking for temporary accommodation for one to two weeks while trying to find a more permanent arrangement. What resources (preferably online) are available for finding a room for a short-term rental?
I'm considering relocating to Seattle from the Midwest for a new job but am very concerned about affordable housing. Looking for a house or apartment rental within an hour's distance via public transit, if possible. Would like to spend between $1,000 and $1,500 if possible. Can go a bit higher. Would like a lot of space -- ideally, 1000 square feet. This would be for my wife, myself and our dog. Any advice about where I should be looking would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I've never visited Amsterdam, but this week I accepted a permanent job there, and am planning to start on August 10th. I'm incredibly excited but also terrified and a little clueless, mostly because I don't have housing sorted, and I don't have a lot in savings to manage a relocation. How can I make this move as painless as possible? [more inside]

Apartment hunting in Brooklyn moves a mile a minute and we have a quick decision to make. There's a good apartment in park slope. We love the idea of it but there's one weird thing: there's a "bump" in the ceiling. The ceiling is sort of tiled, and the area under the light fixture buckles down into a ~meter wide contact lens-like shape. It's odd, and the landlord doesn't plan to "fix" it because he says there's no problem. There's no sign of mold or leaking there or anywhere else in the apartment for that matter. Questions: 1) What concerns should we have and 2) should we sign a lease? For those who don't know NY housing hunts, if you don't decide, someone else will and then you're back to square 1, so hoping folks can weigh in with everything we should be thinking about! (and I don't know how to post a picture, but will if someone tells me how!)
I'm moving to New Orleans for a one-year masters program and need an apartment starting this August. I've never been there and can't visit before moving. Please help me find a place to live! [more inside]

I'm moving to Portland, OR and looking for low-income housing, as I am on SSDI. Not just talking about Section 8 but all income-restricted apartments. Many have waiting lists of around 2 years or more--are there any that may have shorter lists? Plus I'm not sure if there are certain mgmt companies to avoid. Also, is there some sort of tenant center that would be a good resource? I am looking for a 1 BR but a studio is also fine.
My mother, aged 73, would like to move from NYC to near us in the Boston 'burbs to be closer to us and our little daughter (though not moving in with us). She's lived in NYC for 45 years, so wherever she moves would be a big transition. I'd be grateful for any resources, tips, and experiences for helping aging parents with a similar move. [more inside]
