Obsessiveness Filter: I fixate on and plan obsessively about moving to new (specific) places, and I'd like to know why. Here's the situation: I have mild depression with anxiety and take medication for it which helps a lot. However, periodically I do something that I find odd and that I can't find specific references to in information about OCD, depression or anxiety. I pick a place that I might vaguely like to move to, and become obsessed with planning every detail about it. [more inside]

Moving to DC, looking to rent in Tenleytown or Georgetown. But, I'm having a hard time finding good "house" rental listings. Ideally, we're looking for 4 bedrooms (3 plus an office of some sort), close to metro, some kind of yard would be nice.
We're looking to keep it under $4k per month. Starting in June and we're here at least 2 years.
Any thoughts of where there might be some good listings (besides Craigslist), or if you know of a good one for rent that might fit, let me know.
Thanks!

My landlord baffles me. He has told me he will not rent my small one-bedroom to people who plan on single occupancy (i.e. no couples of any kind). I'm wondering if a) anyone else thinks this is odd, and b) if this runs afoul of any laws on housing discrimination (i.e. can you say, I will only rent my studio to one person, no couples allowed)?

Financial noob filter: Housing market fluctuations seem to have always been a big item, but to my noob mind I think "What do people care unless they are buying or selling a house?". I imagine the answer may be something to do with paying a mortgage on the house based on its previous 500k value when it is now worth only 300k. That or equity leverage. Can anyone clear this up for me?

My landlord is trying to deregulate the rent stabilized status of my NYC apartment/home that I have lived in for 15 years. By law he can do this if my income is above $175,000 and the rent is over $2000 a month. I personally do not earn close to this but the rent is over $2000. Question, if I am the sole leaseholder and have a roommate (month to month status) does our combined income qualify towards this total or is it only applicable to the leaseholder?
Basically, I need a roommate to afford the rent and I am trying to find out if I should renew my upcoming lease.

I will soon be teaching a course on ancient Roman domestic spaces, and I am looking for primary source material to supplement readings in scholarship. Any suggestions of Roman texts (poetry, fiction, history, law, biography) that describe a Roman domestic space (domus, villa, insula, palace) would be much appreciated. Textual exempla of Roman domestic practices are also welcome (e.g., the account of Trimalchio's banquet in Petronius' Satyricon).

Gas Central Heating. Is it cheaper/ more economical to run the central heating on for a) a long time at a lower heat temperature or b) a shorter time at a higher heat temperature?
I can't seem to get this out of Googling as all the words are so common.
Note: I know it's good to have a thermostat. We will look into that - our current thermostat just turns the heating off whatever we set it to. So I just need an answer to the a) or b) bit above at the moment.
Thank you! Help keep me and MrLyzzyBee both warm and solvent this winter!

Whenever I go look at a house for rent, I draw a blank on what questions to ask the landlord.
I've started a list from this site. What's missing?
What do you wish you'd asked or looked at more closely before signing a lease? (Specifically for a house, if you can...)
Particulars: Three girls and a dog looking to rent a house with yard somewhere in the 562 or 714 area of So Cal. I expect to be there at the very least a year. We have no appliances of our own, but furniture galore.
