My cousin and I live in separate parts of the country currently, but we'd like to go in together on a 10+ acre piece of land roughly 30 minutes outside of St. Louis now with the intentions of both building on it several years down the road. What are we not considering? [more inside]

Earlier this month, there was a fire in the house my boyfriend and I were renting. Basically the attic fan caused a fairly extensive fire which moved through the ducts and damaged the roof and ceiling. Not much damage was done to the ground floor, other than smoke and water. My boyfriend and I are now considering buying the house, and are looking for advice and experiences you might have for this situation. [more inside]

Several friends and I would like to rent out a house. Some of us have lived at apartments, but most have only lived at home with their parents all their lives. Most of us are 20-21 years old. We are all in the same fraternity... [more inside]

Do real estate sellers ever falsely claim to have a competing offer to drum up a sense of urgency and drive up your own offer? That would be really unethical, right? But is there any way to verify their claim of another offer? [more inside]

We're about to tear up old, nasty carpet and install some new non-carpet flooring. But after way too much time spent researching, I'm still completely confused about the best option that combines sustainability, durability, and appearance without breaking the bank. [more inside]

You are not my structural engineer: I'm interested in a house that has a "settling" problem. There's a 2-inch gap in the floor moulding in the master bedroom. There's a small crack visible on the wall on the first floor directly below. Other than that, no visible issues (but I haven't looked too hard and were directed to these problems by the disclosure statement.) Is this a "RUN!!" situation or is there a scenario which can result in a clean bill of health? The house was built in 1910, is otherwise in beautiful condition, and we're in New England.

My house gets its water from a well. I've been noticing the well pump running at odd times, even when water is not being used. As a test, I double checked that all faucets were off, no washer in use etc. Sure enough the gauge on the pressure tank was slowly dropping, at a rate of about 5psi/min. There is no visible leak anywhere. Any suggestions on how I track this down? [more inside]

What was that music webapp I had on my iPod? Help me remember the site I had saved to my homescreen a while ago. I'm fairly sure it was a webapp and not a proper app. I seem to remember the name for the icon was shortened to a two-letter acronym; I thought it was DI for digitalinspiration.com but googling that shows I was wrong. I'll try to describe it anyway: the app had a series of square, colourful icons down the left-hand side, not unlike the style to the iTunes gift card drawings. Each icon represented a category; I definately remember 'lounge', and the others were mostly dance/electronic music related genres like house, groove etc. probably hip-hop stuff too. Definately a cool and groovy site.

My friend needs advice on renting a house in San Diego. He has been there for years, but he wants to scale down from 5 total roommates (including him) to 3 total roommates, including him.
In order to scale down like this, he'll have to charge at least $1000 per roommate. Then each person will have tons of space.
He wants roommates that are very nice, honest, and super-clean.
Is this do-able? What can he do (he's in no position to make any major home improvements) to make it more likely that he'll find what he's looking for within a reasonable period of time?

I am thinking of getting a conservatory put on our house. It's a traditional UK terrace with a "wing" at the back containing the kitchen, bathroom above. About 6 ft wide. The yard to the side includes our back gate so we can't fill that with a conservatory. Our kitchen doors are on the back. I want to find plans that show how a conservatory can work, but googling just brings either conservatory companies (no plans) or estate agent sites (all terrace houses with a conservatory for sale).
