Our attic space is very very hot. We have ridge vents, and two (small) gable vents, but no soffit vents whatsoever because the house (a 2000 sq foot 1960s ranch) doesn't have soffits. Instead, when you look up at the side of the house, you just see the bottom of the roof; there's just no place to install a soffit vent.
The AC vents run through the attic. The previous owner put 20" of insulation in, which seems to be keeping things manageable, but I'm sure that we're losing a lot of cooling via the attic. As, again, it is unbelievably hot in there. I've actually been leaving the attic stairs in the garage down when I'm home, with the garage door open, in the hopes that some airflow will result.
How can we cool it down? I know that just adding powered fans will do next to nothing as there's nowhere to draw the air from (b/c no soffit vents). Any experience with any new fangled systems? Austin, Texas (so snow is not an issue). The house has stood for 50 years like this, as have all the houses around it, so I know that we don't have
to do anything, but I'd like to if there's a reasonable solution.

Say I wanted to buy 1000 metres squared of suburban land to build a house on. Is my family allowed to live in a couple of caravans on the site while the house is being built, or will my local council nix that? I'm in Australia by the way.

I just sold my house under short sale. The tenant promised me he would be out before the sale, but he didn't leave and is squatting there. He also didn't pay me rent for the last two months since I didn't know he was living there. How should I handle this? [more inside]

Should I buy a house in Bristol, UK, or wait?
I have a 100k deposit, and a 100k mortgage in principle. Should I buy a house or flat in Bristol UK?
I am single, 32, more or less happy renting, and have no reason to buy other than a sense of cultural obligation, boredom with renting, and available cash.
There is nothing tying me to Bristol, if you have any golden location tips I'm willing to travel.

Earlier this month, there was a fire in the house my boyfriend and I were renting. Basically the attic fan caused a fairly extensive fire which moved through the ducts and damaged the roof and ceiling. Not much damage was done to the ground floor, other than smoke and water. My boyfriend and I are now considering buying the house, and are looking for advice and experiences you might have for this situation. [more inside]

You are not my structural engineer: I'm interested in a house that has a "settling" problem. There's a 2-inch gap in the floor moulding in the master bedroom. There's a small crack visible on the wall on the first floor directly below. Other than that, no visible issues (but I haven't looked too hard and were directed to these problems by the disclosure statement.) Is this a "RUN!!" situation or is there a scenario which can result in a clean bill of health? The house was built in 1910, is otherwise in beautiful condition, and we're in New England.

My house gets its water from a well. I've been noticing the well pump running at odd times, even when water is not being used. As a test, I double checked that all faucets were off, no washer in use etc. Sure enough the gauge on the pressure tank was slowly dropping, at a rate of about 5psi/min. There is no visible leak anywhere. Any suggestions on how I track this down? [more inside]

What was that music webapp I had on my iPod? Help me remember the site I had saved to my homescreen a while ago. I'm fairly sure it was a webapp and not a proper app. I seem to remember the name for the icon was shortened to a two-letter acronym; I thought it was DI for digitalinspiration.com but googling that shows I was wrong. I'll try to describe it anyway: the app had a series of square, colourful icons down the left-hand side, not unlike the style to the iTunes gift card drawings. Each icon represented a category; I definately remember 'lounge', and the others were mostly dance/electronic music related genres like house, groove etc. probably hip-hop stuff too. Definately a cool and groovy site.
